Great Mediterranean Coast Hike in Costa Brava, Spain | Day 7 - Cadaques - Cap de Creus Lighthouse
Explore the beauty of Mediterranean coast hiking with us! Discover the variety of landscapes and scenic beaches, its flora and fauna, historical places and small villages. These video series is devoted to the Catalonian part of it, starting from the French village Argelès-sur-Mer in Pyrénées-Orientales all the way to the Spanish village of Cadaqués and Cap de Creus cape on the Costa Brava. Immerse yourself in the peaceful holiday mood and we bet you'll find a place to put on your travel bucket list and to visit on your next vacation! Or even dare to do this hike yourself!
It was the last final day of our hike and the plan was to get to the Cap de Creus Lighthouse and explore the area around it. And so we did getting on the 6 km trail leading to the Lighthouse. The day was overcast and we were ok with it knowing how hot it could get hiking in the sun. But we were still hoping for some epic views and great photos. First part of the trail was going on the car road then turning to the dirt road and then finally to a mountain path. The road part wasn´t too long though. On the way there were lots of uphills and downhills and the path itself was very rocky and unstable in some points. But knowing that you´re already walking on peninsula and from all the sides you´re surrounded by water made this trail really special. Soon enough we started to see the lighthouse up on the mountain top and it looked quite impressive from far. When we got closer to it though it didn´t impress us as much but the place around it was absolutely breathtaking. All those incredible rock cliffs, turquoise water lagoons, seagulls resting and behaving like home and yachts drifting slowly in the sea made this place one in a kind eco system. There is so much variety of relief and rock formations that you can literally spend the whole week there just grasping all that beauty and photographing every corner with the guarantee that every shot is going to be different. So it is definetely a must visit for any passionate phtographer. And we were so dissapointed that we had so little time to spend and explore this place. So we´ll have to come back there at some point in the future. It is to be continued...

Cap de Creus National Park-Paradise In The Province of Girona In the north of the Costa Brava you’ll find one of the wonders of the province of Girona, where there’s a collection of beauty spots, that come close to perfection.
whatever that might be! The Cap de Creus National Park should leave magical memory grooves in your mind and subconscious, such are its amazing landscape and remarkable, rugged beauty.
The wild games that the wind has played with the rocks and cliffs have left sculptures that only nature could create. The hidden coves and natural paradise of the meadows and forests open up your heart, and endless possibilities for excursions.
This stunning scenery becomes more stark as you approach the Cape itself, which is especially rugged with plenty of unusual rock formations. This is definitely a special paradise for those with an interest in geology, but for obvious reasons please be aware that collecting rocks is forbidden. All around the coast there are little coves dotted here and there, with paths, which vary greatly in quality, which link them to the main tracks and also the road.

Catalonia, Cap de Creus
Cap de Creus is a peninsula located at the far northeast of Catalonia, some 25 kilometres south from the French border. The cape lies in the municipal area of Cadaqués, and the nearest large town is Figueres, capital of the Alt Empordà and birthplace of Salvador Dalí. Cap de Creus is the easternmost point of Catalonia and therefore of mainland Spain and the Iberian Peninsula.
The area is a Natural Park. An extraordinary landscape, a windbeaten very rocky dry region, with almost no trees, in contrast with a seaside rich in minuscule creeks of deep blue sea to anchor. Mountains are the eastern foothills of the Pyrenees, the natural border between France and Spain. The region is frequently swept by awful north wind tramontana (beyond mountains) which has caused many naval disasters.
Cadaqués is the most well known village, home of artists and writers, with sophisticated atmosphere, near Port Lligat where Dalí built his home in a paradise small bay. (Dalí depicted the peninsula in his painting The Persistence of Memory.)
El Port de la Selva, with a little fishing harbour, is less exploited, with good gastronomic recourses and pleasant terraces.
At the end of the road and peninsula there is the lighthouse, which you can reach by car, unless you have a RV. Luckily i had my (E)bike with me...

Places to see in ( Cadaques - Spain )
Cadaqués is a town in the Alt Empordà comarca, in the province of Girona, Catalonia, Spain. Cadaques is on a bay in the middle of the Cap de Creus peninsula, near Cap de Creus cape, on the Costa Brava of the Mediterranean.
Cadaques is only a two-and-a-quarter-hour drive from Barcelona, and thus Cadaques is very accessible and not only attracts tourists but people who want a second home for weekends and summers. In 2002, Cadaqués had an official population of 2,612, but up to ten times as many people can live in the town during the peak of the summer tourism season.
Cadaqués has a special place in art history. Commanding charcoals, by local artist Eliseu Meifrèn, of the 19th century Cadaqués beleaguered by a winter tramontane, can be seen at the Cadaqués museum. Fren was the first modern artist to live in Cadaqués and gave the town many of his works and a marble top table on which he sketched many of its turn-of-the-century fishermen.
Salvador Dalí often visited Cadaqués in his childhood, and later kept a home in Port Lligat, a small village on a bay next to the town. A summer holiday here in 1916, spent with the family of Ramon Pichot is seen as especially important to Dalí's artistic career. Other notable artists, including Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Marcel Duchamp, Richard Hamilton, Albert Ràfols-Casamada, Antoni Pitxot, Henri-François Rey, Melina Mercouri and Maurice Boitel also spent time here. Cadaqués is mentioned in the story Tramontana by Gabriel García Márquez.
The interesting submarine life of this sleepy fishing village was studied for several years by phycologist Françoise Ardré, long before Cadaqués was discovered and transformed into a tourism destination. On Mondays there is a travelling market in Cadaqués, located near the parking lot. This market has a wide variety of products.

These video series is devoted to the Catalonian part of it, starting from the French village Argelès-sur-Mer in Pyrénées-Orientales all the way to the Spanish village of Cadaqués and Cap de Creus cape on the Costa Brava.
We had a beautiful start of the day having our breakfast at the scenic beach and watching the sun coming up right next to our camping Port de la Vall. The morning was beautiful and we tried to get on the trail as early as possible to escape the middle day heat. We walked through the beautiful white town Port de la Selva, saw the info board with the map of our trail and started our way uphill. We planned to follow the GR 92 route as it seemed to be the perfect trail in terms of distance and it was leading us right to our destination Cadaques. When we were out of the town and turned to the mountain path we entered right away in the Natural Park Cap de Creus with its rich flora and fauna. It claims to have deers, wild boars, lots of bird varieties and reptiles. And we were very excited to cross it today. The route continued to go up as we walked through the area with lots of built old rock walls on the hills that were probably serving for agricultural purposes in the past and looked like crazy amount or work. Then all of a sudden out from a bush we saw a huge lizard running towards the rocks. It was the longest lizard we've seen in our lives and probably was a variety of a monitor lizard. We got scared at first confusing it for a snake but then we were lucky to see another one and even got to film it. At one point the route became quite flat with very little ups and downs and so it was very easy to walk. If it wasn't the heat that was burning us from above and having a little to no shadow throughout the way was very hard. So this trail is better to do as early as possible in the day. We got a bit lost once confusing the routes as there are so many crossovers on the way, but then we realized that it's not a big deal as it was leading to Cadaques anyway. But you might want to have the navigation around in order to choose the shortest route and avoid going over extra mountains. Overall the trail was very picturesque and in spring when everything is blooming it's especially beautiful. We got to experience the feeling of going through enourmous mountain summit and being able to enjoy the mountains views and the views of the seaside on the other side. The place is very unique in its kind. So in the uplifted mood still having much energy left we were stepping into Cadaques...
