Cape Agulhas, southernmost point of Africa - South Africa Travel Channel
Cape Agulhas in South Africa is the southernmost point of the African continent and about 150 km east of the Cape of Good Hope. The Cape marks the boundary between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.
The clash of warm and cold ocean currents often leads to violent waves and was feared by the seafarers. However, the lighthouse at Cape Agulhas has guided many ships safely around the Cape.
The coasts around Cape Agulhas are seen as one of the most feared ship graveyard in the world. On a length of 100 km one can find approx.140 shipwrecks, including the Brederrode of the Dutch East Indian Company (VOC) and the HMS Birkenhead.
However the wind and waves together with sunny beaches lends the countryside its own character, which is rounded off by beautiful sunsets.

Kap Agulhas in Südafrika ist der südlichste Punkt des afrikanischen Kontinents und liegt ca. 150 km östlich des Kaps der Guten Hoffnung. Das Kap markiert die Grenze zwischen dem Atlantischen und Indischen Ozean.
Das Aufeinandertreffen von kalten und warmen Meeresströmungen führt oft zu heftigem Wellengang und war bei Seefahrern sehr gefürchtet. Jedoch hat der Leuchtturm am Kap Agulhas viele Schiffe sicher um das Kap geführt.

L'Agulhas is the most southern coastal village and holiday resort in Africa, located within the Cape Agulhas Municipal area at the southernmost tip of the African mainland. It is situated next to the town of Struisbaai and about 30 kilometres south of the regional centre of Bredasdorp. The name Agulhas, Portuguese for needles, is said to have been given to the cape because the compass-needle was seen to point due north, that is, with no magnetic deviation. The Agulhas Bank is reputed to be the richest fishing area in the Southern Hemisphere. Some of the older residents and documents refer to the town as by its former name Cape Agulhas or Cape L'Agulhas or simply Agulhas which were the names that referred to this town before it was changed to L'Agulhas to avoid confusion when the Bredasdorp Municipality changed its name to The Cape Agulhas Municipality.
Tourist interests and activities include: A visit to the Lighthouse with a view from the tower and a walkway along the seafront to the new most southern African monument and a place where two oceans meet at the foot of Africa. A little further along the walkway is the shipwreck of Meisho Maru. Tourists also enjoy the local fyhbos plants, bird watching, hiking, swimming in the local tidal pools or a game of Jukskei on Saturday mornings. Other interests are visiting arts and craft shops, local wine sales, shops and restaurants or enjoy a meal at one of the best local fish restaurants in the area. L’Agulhas is a peaceful town and a ‘get away’ from busy city living.

Historically, the cape has been known to sailors as a major hazard on the traditional clipper route. It is sometimes regarded as one of the great capes. It was most commonly known in English as Cape L'Agulhas until the 20th century. The town of L'Agulhas is located near to the cape.

There has been an on-going debate about where exactly the southernmost tip of Africa actually lies. Many people believe that it is at Cape Point but the southernmost point really lies in Cape Agulhas, 170 kilometres southeast of Cape Town. This year, the SA National Parks have secured R22 million to develop the Agulhas precinct which forms part of the Agulhas National Park

Junavaunussa koetun eeppisen auringonnousun jälkeen saavumme Afrikan eteläisimpään paikkaan, kuuluisaan Cape Agulhas nimiseen niemenkärkeen, jossa Intian valtameri ja Atlantti kohtaavat. WAU!
Pakollisten turistikuvien jälkeen ja rosvosektorin pelossa lähdemme jatkamaan matkaa kohti Hermanusta, joka on kuuluisa valaiden bongailu kaupunki. Täällä niitä on... meri täynnä!
Koko road tripin pelottavimpia hetkiä koetaan, kun tiellä vastaan tulee massiivinen metsäpalo. Savu ja liekit kohoavat niin korkealle, että meidän on pakko etsiä kiertoreitti.
