Cape Coast Castle in Cape Coast, Ghana
Cape Coast Castle is one of about forty slave castles, or large commercial forts, built on the Gold Coast of West Africa (now Ghana) by European traders. It was originally a Portuguese feitoria or trading post, established in 1555. However in 1653 the Swedish Africa Company constructed a timber fort there. It originally was a centre for the trade in timber and gold. It was later used in the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Other Ghanaian slave castles include Elmina Castle and Fort Christiansborg. They were used to hold slaves before they were loaded onto ships and sold in the Americas, especially the Caribbean. This gate of no return was the last stop before crossing the Atlantic Ocean.
The large quantity of gold dust found in Ghana was what primarily attracted Europe, and many natives of Cape Coast used this to their advantage. In exchange for gold, mahogany, their own people and other local items, the natives received clothing, blankets, spices, sugar, silk and many other items. The castle at Cape Coast was a market where these transactions took place.
At the time enslaved Africans were a valuable commodity in the Americas and elsewhere, and slaves became the principal item traded in Cape Coast. Due to this, many changes were made to Cape Coast Castle. One of the alterations was the addition of large underground dungeons that could hold as many as a thousand slaves awaiting export. Many European nations flocked to Cape Coast in order to get a foothold in the slave trade. Business was very competitive and this led to conflict. This is the reason why the castle at Cape Coast changed hands many times during the course of its commercial history.
In Cape Coast Castle, the underground dungeon was a space of terror, death, and blackness. This stood as a direct juxtaposition to the European living quarters and commanding heights of whiteness above, who lived relatively luxuriously. The basement of this imposing fortress was often the last memory slaves had of their homeland before being shipped off across the Atlantic, as this signified the beginning of their journey. Slaves were beaten and tortured, and many succumbed to disease. Today, on top of the sediment of decayed bones, flesh and excrement that has congealed over centuries stands a shrine to Nana Tabir, the local rock god. This shrine is maintained by a traditional African priest, who accepts monetary offerings towards prayers of atonement.
The first fort established on the present site of Cape Coast Castle was built by Hendrik Caerloff for the Swedish Africa Company. Caerloff was a former employee of the Dutch West India Company who had risen to the rank of fiscal before employing himself with the latter company established by Louis de Geer. As a former high-ranking officer of the Dutch, Caerloff had the friendly relations with the local chiefs necessary to establish a trading post. In 1650, Caerloff succeeded in getting the permission of the King of Fetu to establish a fort at Cabo Corso. The first timber lodge was erected at the site in 1653 and named Carolusborg after King Charles X of Sweden.
Caerloff returned to Europe in 1655, leaving a Swede by the name of Johann Philipp von Krusenstjerna in charge of Carolusborg. Louis de Geer had however died in the meantime, and Caerloff got himself involved in a serious dispute with his heirs. In Amsterdam, he convinced merchants to give a financial injection to the Danish West India Company, for which he set sail to the Gold Coast in 1657, with the goal in mind to capture for Denmark the Swedish lodges and forts he had established himself. With the help of the Dutch, Caerloff succeeded in driving the Swedes out, leaving the Gold Coast on the captured ship Stockholm Slott, and with Von Krusenstjerna on board as a prisoner.
Caerloff had left Samuel Smit, also a former employee of the Dutch West India Company, in charge of Carolusborg. The Dutch were able to convince Smit in 1659 of the rumour that Denmark had been conquered by Sweden, upon which Smit rejoined the Dutch West India Company, handing over all Danish possessions to the Dutch. The King of Fetu was displeased with this, however, and prevented the Dutch from taking possession of the fort. A year later, the King decided to sell it to the Swedes. After the King died in 1663, the Dutch were finally able to occupy the fort.

Elmina Castle / Cape Coast Castle - Year of Return: All Africans in Diaspora must visit the Castles
Cape Coast Castle is one of about forty slave castles, or large commercial forts, built on the Gold Coast of West Africa by European traders. It was originally a Portuguese feitoria or trading post, established in 1555. However in 1653 the Swedish Africa Company constructed a timber fort there.
Elmina Castle was erected by the Portuguese in 1482 as Castelo de São Jorge da Mina, also known as Castelo da Mina or simply Mina in present-day Elmina, Ghana. It was the first trading post built on the Gulf of Guinea, and the oldest European building in existence south of the Sahara.

GHANA VLOG 2016 | Cape Coast Castle | Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade
Hey guys! I'm so excited that I've been able to upload my second vlog in one day after all the upload issues I've been experiencing! Anyway, this video is of our trip to the Cape Coast, and our tour of the Cape Coast Castle, which was instrumental during the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. This tour was definitely an eye-opening experience and we left not feeling the same as when we arrived, because it's one this to read about it, and watch videos, but its another thing to walk the same path of those who suffered as a result of the Slave Trade. This was history in real life! I certainly recommend this to any of my fellow Ghanaians both in Ghana and abroad and anyone who gets the opportunity to visit Ghana! I hope this video allows you to experience a little bit of what we did on that tour! xoxo

President Obama in Ghana at the Cape Coast Dungeons pt 1-2
President Obama and his family toured Cape Coast Holocaust Dungeons in Ghana West Africa Saturday 07-11-09. This is an interview with Anderson Cooper of CNN AC 360 around the dungeons. Cape Coast is one of the biggest of the many dungeons on the coast of West Africa that stored Africans in the early 1500s to mid 1800s that were used & abused as cargo on slave ships destined for the plantations of the Americas and the Caribbean. Ghana is one of the most incredible places in Africa and the world. You have to be there to experience the experience of a lifetime. Visit our website africafortheafricans.org for information on tours to Ghana and other historical countries in Africa.

Hans Cottage Botel - Cape Coast, Ghana
This clip is of Hans Cottage Botel, which is located near Cape Coast in the Central Region of Ghana (on the road from Cape Coast to Kakum National Park, about half-way between these two points).
It is a resort-hotel, with a crocodile pond, and is popular with tourists. The bar/restaurant is in a double-storey building build over the banks of the pond, so you can sit & watch the crocodiles, as I did with my very lovely female friend, Annie, who is seen in the footage. A wedding was being held at Hans Cottage that day, and you can see the wedding party briefly at one stage, and a few American tourists are also seen looking at the crocodiles.
Cape Coast - Ghana
This series of clips is of a taxi ride through the streets of Cape Coast, capital of the Central Region of Ghana. Unfortunately, we didn't pass Fort Carolusberg (Cape Coast Castle) in this series of clips.

Cape Coast Castle - Ghana’s Slave Castles (West Africa)
The castles were the ultimate stop in many ways. They provided the last experience that men and women had in their homeland before their final departure. For those who didn’t make it to the new world, the castles were the last place they ever saw on land. The last shreds of hope would wither away with everyday of captivity in the castle.
