Cape Kidnappers is a headland at the southeastern extremity of Hawkes Bay (Maori: Heretaunga) on the east coast of New Zealands North Island. It is located 20 kilometers southeast of the city of Napier. The Cape is presently the site of a large Australasian Gannet colony, (Morus serrator or Sula bassana, also Australian Gannet, Tākapu) a large seabird of the gannet family Sulidae. The birds can be seen from September to April. In September they return and build their nests ready for the arrival of the chicks during December and January. The chicks are then fattened up ready for their first and departing flight in March/April when they migrate to warmer climates.
