Washington DC: Chinatown
Washington, D.C.'s Chinatown is a small, historic area east of Downtown Washington, D.C. along H and I Streets between 5th and 8th Streets, Northwest.
Historically, the area was once home to thousands of Chinese immigrants, which has shrunk to fewer than 300 in 2017. The current neighborhood was the second in Washington to be called “Chinatown” since 1931. Originally, the first Chinatown was built in the Federal Triangle on the south side of Pennsylvania Avenue some time after 1851, but was relocated to the H Street area when a new federal building was built there. In 1997, prominent landmarks such as the Capital One Arena, a sports and entertainment arena has gentrified the area. The neighborhood is served by the Gallery Place station of the Washington Metro.
In 1986, the city dedicated the Friendship Archway, a traditional Chinese gate. This was a collaboration between the Washington DC government and its sister city Beijing. It was intended to promote attract visitors in addition to recognizing the local Chinese residents.
In 1986, the Metro station was given its present name: Gallery Place-Chinatown. The city constructed the Wah Luck House apartments at 6th and H Streets, NW, to accommodate the displaced residents in 1982. Designed by architect Alfred Liu, the apartment building introduced modern Chinese design motifs due to the red-paneled balconies. The MCI Center was completed in 1997 (renamed Verizon Center in 2006 and Capital One Arena in 2017). After the construction of the arena, AsianWeek said in 2000 that the neighborhood barely remains.
Numerous authors have cited Chinatown as an example of gentrification and an example of the commodification of culture. In 2015, the Washington Post reported that only about 300 Chinese-Americans remained in the borough, and many of them were being forced out by their landlords.
In 2010, the census tract that contains Chinatown has around 3,000 residents. Chinatown is only 21% Asian, compared to 1990, when it had a majority Chinese American population. In 1990, its population was 66% Asian and 20% African American. Washington, D.C.'s Chinatown is relatively small in terms of size and number of Chinese residents in comparison to other major Chinatown neighborhoods in the U.S., such as those in San Francisco and in Manhattan. Approximately half of Chinatown's residents live in the Wah Luck House, which has 153 units of apartment complexes. The closest Chinese supermarket, the Great Wall Supermarket, is fourteen miles west in Falls Church, Virginia.
After the 1968 riots following the Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination, many Chinese people sought a more economically stable and safe environment and moved out of Washington, D.C.'s Chinatown, relocating to suburban neighborhoods in Fairfax County, Virginia, and Montgomery County, Maryland. In 1970, there were roughly 3,000 Chinese residents in Washington's Chinatown; by 2016, the number was fewer than 600, many of them seniors residing in two low-income housing developments. North Potomac, Maryland, is 18.4% Chinese American, the highest of any community within the Washington metropolitan area. The Maryland city of Rockville also has a significant population of residents of Chinese descent, at eight percent. In Virginia, sizable Chinese American communities are located in Centreville, Chantilly, and Floris, south of Washington Dulles International Airport.
A Walk Through WASHINGTON D.C.
We just spent five days in Washington D.C. and my favorite part by far was the walk along the National Mall, where you’ll find all of these majestic monuments like the Washington Monument, the National World War II Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial. Not far from there is the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial. So much history in one place - Washington D.C. is so worth a visit.
Follow me on my journey while we travel the world. Next stop: Mexico. Then we’ll begin our road trip through the US and Canada in our van.

Wizdom Entertainment - Washington D.C.
DJ WIZDOM is an American DJ born in New York and influenced at an early age by the Hip-Hop music that was becoming prevalent in the 80s. Although being born in New York, Wizdom has lived up and down the East Coast with time spent in South Carolina and the majority of his life now spent in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Wizdom attended high school in the Roanoke, Virginia area where upon graduation decided to explore live in the Washington D.C. area by attending Geroge Mason University in Fairfax, VA. During his stint at GMU Wizdom competed at a Varsity Level for the Patriots while competing in the High Jump at the Division I-A level while pursuing a degree in Engineering. Six years later he graduated and started working in the D.C. area.
After a year of doing the 9-5 thing he decided to give DJing a try at the age of 23. After purchasing his first pair of CDJ 800s he started DJing House Parties for his college friends that were still in School. Through sheer luck (that he happened to be prepared for) Wizdom inquired about a residency at a popular bar in the Fairfax area called the Auld Shebeen and was asked to pick up the Saturday night residency there. After holding that residency for two years from 2007-2008, Wizdom got the OPPORTUNITY of a lifetime and was offered a job in the English University town Loughborough (in between Leicester and Nottingham, England). In 2009 Wizdom moved to England.
Once settled in England WIZDOM had his DJ Equipment mailed to him by his father in the UK. He then further sharpened his skills in the ultra competitive DJ scenes in the UK by playing a set at Ministry of Sound in London (The Loft) in 2010, and holding down a Thursday night and Monday night gig at Vodka Revolutions in Loughborough. He also attended many Dance music festivals that England is so famous for (London Electronic Dance Music Festival and Love Box) and was a regular patron of the clubs in London (Ministry of Sound, Cargo, The Red Church) as well as other British Cities like Nottingham, Manchester, Glasgow and Edinburg (Gatecrashers, Vodka Revolutions, Viper Club) .
After 2 memorable years in England WIZDOM returned to the US and re-settled back in Washington D.C.. After returning it was clear that in this new day and age of DJing that simply having skills on DJ decks alone was not going to be enough into the highly competitive business that DJing has become. It was apparent that the ability to produce exclusive tracks, the understanding of basic music theory, and an appreciation for marketing as well as more aggressive marketing techniques were needed to stand out amongst the other highly talented DJs in the area.
Therefore, this video was produced by WIZDOM ENTERTAINMENT in close conjunction with CRAZE MEDIA ONE and THOUGHT TRAIN CREATIVE an is seen as a necessary step to demonstrate Wizdom's commitment to the craft of DJing and his desire to return to playing out at exciting venues in Washington D.C, the United Kingdom, Australia and beyond.

Washington Plaza Hotel
Washington Plaza Hotel
A Washington Landmark
In 1843, Thomas Circle was a quiet residential neighborhood, a reprieve for the political, business and social elite away from the bustle of The Hill. In fact, the site of the Washington Plaza Hotel was home to Andrew Wylie, a presiding judge in the trial of the Lincoln assassination. Nearly 120 years later, in 1962, the International Inn hotel chain opened, quickly becoming one of Washington, DC's most popular and cherished hotels.
Architect Morris Lapidus, known for the famed Fontainebleau and Eden Roc hotels in Miami Beach, insisted on designing a resort-like property to exceed the expectations of DC visitors. With its curving corridors, strong graphic elements, and sensational glass dome covered swimming pool, the resulting nine-story edifice on Thomas Circle was the talk of the town. The hotel has welcomed many powerful politicos during the years, ranging the political spectrum from the Rev. Jesse Jackson to Colorado Governor Richard Lamm to Senate Minority Leader Bob Dole and Vice President George Bush.
Ideally located near the Smithsonian's museums and the National Mall's monuments and memorials, our downtown hotel continued to be a favorite among savvy business and leisure travelers. Over the past decade, a surge of art galleries, boutique shops, innovative restaurants and entertainment venues around Thomas Circle breathed new vibrancy into the downtown area.
After recent renovations, the Washington Plaza now blends its historical charms with a contemporary atmosphere immersed in the cultural electricity of the city. Sophisticated with a casual ambiance, the Washington Plaza offers the amenities and accommodations that modern travelers expect. After 55 years, however, our contemporary hotel still boasts Washington, DC's most celebrated swimming pool, which provides spectacular city views, as well as a prime location to the nation's premier landmarks and buildings.
Explore Attractions
Located on Thomas Circle, in the heart of Washington, DC and near Massachusetts Ave., our contemporary hotel's ideal location is in the city's trendiest neighborhood, and is only minutes from Washington, DC's iconic museums, monuments and attractions. Walk to catch a Wizards game at the Capital One Arena or explore the boutique shops and designer retailers that dot our tree-lined sidewalks. Dine at the area's acclaimed restaurants or unwind with a rooftop cocktail. Ideal for business travelers, our location is also only four miles from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) and five blocks from the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.
