The LONG Journey from Istanbul to Cappadocia, Turkey
Vlog #528 Istanbul to Cappadocia, Turkey // In today’s huge travel vlog, we had to take 6 means of transportation, which ended up being 8… because we got on the wrong bus going to the wrong airport! It was a super long day, but we still had time to go in an airport lounge! AND it was all worth it to get there because Cappadocia and the cave we booked to live in were both awesome! Plus we filled you in on our Ramadan experience :)

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married June 2013 and quickly caught the travel bug! We started “travel hacking” and taking more trips together and finally decided we wanted to travel for one year. After 2 years of saving $ and travel hacking over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016. We started this YouTube channel to share our experiences with friends and family, then decided we really liked vlogging and traveling. So we extended our 1 year trip to THREE years :) Now we have a goal of traveling to 100 countries before Nate turns 30 (which is March 20, 2019)! We are incredibly thankful to do something we love every day. :)

David scratches another one off of his bucket list with this epic trip
through the region of Cappadocia. Watch as we show you the top things to see and do in Cappadocia.
First stop is the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Goreme Open Air Museum. This area supported a large Christian community for several centuries. By the 4th century, Saint Basel had founded various religious settlements in the area. The Göreme Open Air Museum is a testament to St. Basil’s influence – it is a place where daily worship was carried out in seclusion.
Then onto some arts and crafts. Turkey is known for its intricate hand woven rugs (Kilim), and Cappadocia is a great place to see them being made and also to purchase them if you are interested. David toured Gallery Cappadocia and spoke with the manager about why people should come see the rugs being made. Also, the selection here is amazing! Shopping for rugs in Istanbul can be a headache if you don’t speak the language, which is why many tourists instead prefer to shop for them in Cappadocia where there are less crowds.
David then heads to the town of Avanos to visit the Firca pottery workshop. There, the artists are working meticulously to freehand patterns and calligraphy. Visitors will get a demonstration on how the pottery is formed and will get the chance to browse an extensive inventory of remarkable quality.
We can then see the cluster of fairy chimneys in Cavusin Village, during which David gives us an explanation of how these unusual rock formations are formed. Basically, wind erosion leave each rocky mound with a “hat.”
The Kaymakli Underground City (UNESCO) is another great example of the wonder Cappadocia holds. During the Roman Era, Christian communities used them to hide from religious persecution. There are several underground cities in Cappadocia, many of which are interconnected with tunnels. Kaymakli is several layers deep, with long passages, narrow steps, and a complex tunnel system connecting the rooms. Definitely one of the top things to see and do in Cappadocia!
Back outside David tours the Valley of the Monks in the village of Pasabag. Pasabag valley contains some of the most striking fairy chimneys in Cappadocia. After the hike, David strolls the town of Mustafapasa.
A tour of the Saruhan was an interesting experience, especially since the building was used as an inn for traders traveling along the Silk Road. David continues his journey into the Zelve Valley, the village of Urgup to see some of Cappadocia’s most famous fairy chimneys, and up to the top of the castle of Uchisar to get fantastic panoramic views.
Finally, David shows us the number 1 thing to do in Cappadocia… take a hot air balloon ride! This is the best way to experience Cappadocia from above and appreciate the distinct rock formations unlike anywhere else on earth.
If you’re planning on heading to Cappadocia, we highly recommend Euphrates Tours. They helped us explore this fascinating region and do everything you watched in this video.

Cappadocia Cave Suites
A unique cave hotel that combines houses and cave dwellings of the Hittite, Roman and Byzantine Periods with the luxurious comfort of the 21st Century.
TRAVEL TO MAGICAL CAPPADOCIA (2019) cappadocia turkey,
TRAVEL TO MAGICAL CAPPADOCIA (2019) cappadocia turkey,
Cappadocia the name, traditionally used in Christian sources throughout history, continues in use as an international tourism concept to define a region of exceptional natural wonders, in particular, characterized by fairy chimneys and a unique historical and cultural heritage. Moreover for me to write this, in particular, is for my passion. Which is for traveling, travel and explore the world. My homage to travel depicts my efforts to motivate people for traveling. My book In love with Japan is the example of my gratitude for traveling.
History of Turkish Cappadocia
By the end of the early 12th century, Anatolian Seljuks had established their sole dominance over the region. With the decline and the fall of the Konya-based Seljuks in the second half of the 13th century, they were gradually replaced by the Karaman-based Beylik of Karaman, who themselves were gradually succeeded by the Ottoman Empire over the course of the 15th century. Cappadocia remained part of the Ottoman Empire for the centuries to come and remains now part of the modern state of Turkey.
Nevsehir
A fundamental change occurred in between when a new urban center. Nevşehir was founded in the early 18th century by a grand vizier who was a native of the locality (Nevşehirli Damat İbrahim Pasha). To serve as a regional capital, a role the city continues to assume to this day. In the meantime, many former Cappadocians had shifted to a Turkish dialect (written in the Greek alphabet, Karamanlıca). And where the Greek language was maintained (Sille, villages near Kayseri, Pharasa town and other nearby villages). It became heavily influenced by the surrounding Turkish. This dialect of Greek is known as Cappadocian Greek. Following the 1923 population exchange between Greece and Turkey, the language is now only spoken by a handful of the former population’s descendants in modern Greece.
Tourism in Modern Cappadocia
The area is a popular tourist destination, as it has many areas with unique geological, historic, and cultural features. Touristic Cappadocia includes 4 cities:
Nevsehir, Kayseri, Aksaray, and Nigde
Among the most visited underground cities are Derinkuyu, Kaymakli, Gaziemir, and Ozkonak. The best historic mansions and cave houses for tourist stays are in Ürgüp, Göreme, Guzelyurt, and Uçhisar.
The Great Göreme
I lived mostly in Göreme and witnessed its inexplicable beauty. To travel, explore and to learn. A small town surrounded by mountains said to be made by volcanic ash. Amazing views from one corner to the other. I had witnessed surprising swing of change in weather over the period of five days where I was able to witness sunny days, rain and indeed the sweet snow.
Amazing
And the next thing was amazing. He not only helped me in the process of knowing. Why such particular currencies were not being exchanged in those small towns. But also escorted me to the nearest bus station. Yes, folks, you heard me right, he gave me a ride in his car and dropped me to a nearby bus station for my convenience and not only that he stayed there until the bus arrived. More to the greatest generosity and hospitality he offered me dinner and also offered me any help whatsoever I could please to request and he was right there to help. Just one brother to another we mixed up in a chit chat and it was like we knew each other since ages. He told me he also can find me vacation packages.
Cappadocia is an ancient city, and as soon as you reach this magical place. You would feel the generosity of nature with a unique and completely different style of landscape.
I believe the movie Alladin must have been filmed in Cappadocia. The rich culture endured in ancient civilizations can be seen immensely in this place. I love rain, and I love snowfall. You will get both over here. Cold weather with a view designed only for those who are unique themselves. Cappadocia has a lot of valleys from which. I love the most are pigeon valley, rose valley, and love valley.
Uchishehr castle has a mesmerizing view from the top and is best for hiking. A large picture of the countryside with colorful balloons hanging in the clouds. It is one of the most attracting and eye-catching destinations. The more you explore, the more you will love it and get inspired by its unique beauty.
The souvenir shops, on the other hand, deserve their space into the fantastic sketch of this beautiful city. Hand made crafts from local people are just out of this world. And you have a massive variety to chose from. Moreover, you can get almost anything you could have dreamed of shopping from such a store.

Best Places to Eat in Cappadocia, Turkey
Best Places to Eat in Cappadocia, Turkey
TRAVEL HUSTLE REPEAT GEAR ►
MY FILM MAKING KIT ►
David’s Been Here takes you to Cappadocia, Turkey to explore the best places to eat in the region. Cappadocia is known for its unusual rock formations and traditional handicrafts, as well as for its supreme hot air ballooning, but there are also several local foods to try.
In this video David showcases his favorite restaurants in the towns of Goreme, Avanos, Mustafapasha, and Urgup. The first restaurant David visits is around the corner from his hotel in Goreme. Restaurant Dibek is a family-owned enterprise in a rustic setting. Here David shows us what a traditional clay pot meal is like. Basically, the kebab (meat) is placed inside a clay pot, sealed, and baked in a wood burning oven. The kebab is allowed to simmer in its own juices, making it super flavorful. Dibek serves its clay pot kebabs with rice, salad, bread, and hummus.
Next up in Goreme is Sedef Restaurant. You can’t miss this place - it’s situated right in the town center along the main street. Sedef serves up breakfast, lunch, and dinner and the best part is it won’t break the bank. Sedef also serves clay pot meals with delicious sides. David tries some local wine from the Cappadocia region.
Now onto the third restaurant in Goreme, A La Turca. This one has more of a fine dining atmosphere. As you can see, this restaurant has beautiful views of the town. Although the menu features international food, the kebabs are a must-try! Remember to make a reservation in advance if you would like to sit on the terrace. The restaurant is quite large, but still manages to feel cozy and intimate. If you’re not in the mood for another clay pot meal, they serve international food as well.
The next place that David visits is Avanos, a town known for its pottery. Actually, all the clay used to make the clay pot kebabs comes from the riverbanks in Avanos. Here David has lunch with his guide at Bizim Ev Restaurant. In Turkish, Bizim Ev means ‘our house’. The restaurant is situated in the owner’s family home, which is a beautiful stone house in the center of town. They have a wine cellar and space to accommodate large groups. You can see family photos and memorabilia on the walls. The baked mushrooms with cheese and homemade baklava were amazing!
Urfa Sofrasi is another one of David’s favorite restaurants in Avanos, especially because it is budget-friendly and in the center of town. The lunch specials are generous and served with freshly baked bread. David enjoyed a filling meal here with his guide.
Next stop on David’s gastronomic tour is Mustafapasha, a town that used to be an old Greek village. David dines at Old Greek House restaurant, which is named for being just that. This is a beautiful Greek home that is now a hotel and restaurant run by Suleyman and his family. His wife cooks int he kitchen and they serve up traditional Turkish dishes
David couldn’t resist dining at a fancy restaurant while in Cappadocia, and so he went to Dimrit in Urgup after several people recommended it to him. Dimrit even let David crack open his own clay pot meal. Dimrit offers the perfect setting for a romantic night out after a busy day of sightseeing.
And there you have David’s favorite places to eat in Cappadocia. It is his hope you will try this mouth-watering cuisine for yourself during your visit.

Travel Story - 3000-km Turkey coach tour entertaining the Singaporean tourists
Dec 25, 2013 Istanbul
DoubleTree by Hilton - Istanbul - Avcilar,
Flying back to Singapore today
Travel stories - It needs brains and energy to communicate excellently with your Singaporean tourist and rarely will you find a local guide educational and entertaining as Mr Serkam.
For example, Use your brains anecdote is one of those jokes that make the audience laugh aloud.
Turkish tour guide, Serkam, 8 years of experience, explains the history, culture, gets feedback, learns Singaporean slangs, Malay, Mandarin and dialect phrases from the clients and enterains them with jokes. One feedback I asked from a Malay mum and daughter was that they had no time to doze off inside the bus as he pointed out the various places of interest in the 3000-km trip from Istanbul to Ankara and back to Istanbul. Top rated communications with clients - education and entertainment making clients feel happy do not come easy for any tour guide as it is part of the DNA of a person and he certainly knows how to do it. This video illustrates his educational aspect.
USE YOUR BRAIN
On Dec 24, 2013, we visited an underground city. In the front row of the coach sat Mr and Mrs Ong and myself. We had opted for the optional tours which needed a full coach - all or nothing. Since we had two coaches, those who opted out would be in the other coach in which Mr Ong and I were alloted. So, I had the opportunity to meet Mr Serkam who conducted these 5 optional tours.
Mr Ong, a retiree of 63 years of age, is the vocal minority who was frank about the qualities of the tour guide and he did not leave any doubt that he preferred being with Mr Serkam who is young and energetic. He asked a lot of questions and this gave Mr Serkam a chance to inform us.
After the visit to the Underground City with its small caves said to house 15,000 or 50,000 Christians, he asked: As the caves are so small and crowded, how did the people make babies? Mr Serkam referred the question to the audience. Nobody replied. Then he asked me. There were two little girls aged around 8 and 9 years old in this group and they were intelligent girls. So how did they do it? he asked me, of all people. I needed to reply fast as everybody was wide awake and interested in how I, a vet, as publicised by Mr One earlier, would explain the mechanics of human reproduction
Everyone must be all ears.
Use your brains! I replied and everybody laughed.
P.S There was a background to this reply. Earlier, Mr Serkam told us he saw our Singaporean guide Sebastian texting angrily to his colleague in Singapore the words: Use your brains and was much impressed with this new phrase.
Sebastian did not mind him joking about it. So that was the background of use your brains and I had a brainwave to use this phrase to answer how did the cave people make babies.
This is just one of the several episodes of how Mr Serkam entertains the clients in between the usual boring historical and cultural facts of Turkey. Singaporeans are not really into history and culture in my opinion and so it is a frustrating task of the dedicated European tour guides talking to a scattered Singaporean audience more interested in taking photographs and shopping.
Sebastian was kind enough to let me know why he texted Use your brains as his colleague texted that he was stupid. Many times, I would wish that my interns and staff will use common sense and I guess use your brains is more offensive to the recipient. The whole 3000-km Turkey coach travel with Mr Serkam was full of jokes that would fill a book of How to entertain and educate the demanding and easily bored Singaporean tourists!.
