#naturephotography #travel Photography at Carmelite Church at Mdina, Malta
In the first Carmelite settlement on Mount Carmel, the oratory or church was the architectural centre of the Hermitage. While later foundations rarely retained this architectural setup, the church is still the spiritual centre of every Carmelite community. The Friars gather daily in the church for the celebration of the Eucharist and the Liturgy of the Hours (formerly called Divine Office) at different hours of the day. The church is also the place where they minister to God’s people, celebrating the Eucharist and the Sacrament of Penance and preaching. The first Carmelites dedicated their church on Mt Carmel to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God. By doing this, they were in fact choosing her as Patroness of the Order. Their spiritual heirs throughout the centuries continued to dedicate most of their churches to her. The Carmelite Church at Mdina is dedicated to the Annunciation of the Virgin.
The Church was built between 1660 and 1675 and is believed to have been designed by the French military engineer Mederico Blondel des Croisettes (1628-1698). It is one of the most important centralized churches in Maltese Baroque architecture and was the first church to be built in Malta to an elliptical plan.
The Carmelite Church has always played an important role in the city of Mdina. During the French occupation the church was despoiled of its silver in July 1798. The French returned in September to steal the church’s precious damask hangings. Maltese rebels immediately locked the doors of the church as the French approached and, it is said, a young boy climbed up to the belfry to sound the alarm. This event sparked off the revolution against the tyranny of the French. The Cathedral Chapter operated from this church after the earthquake of 1693 which had caused considerable damage to the Cathedral which had to be rebuilt. The Chapter remained here until October 1702 when the new Cathedral was consecrated.
In the church, one can appreciate the extensive restoration projects that have been undertaken, especially the spectacular dome painting and the choir. The church boasts of works by significant painters including, Mattia Preti, Stefano Erardi, Michele Bellanti and Giuseppe Calì. Among the important sculptural works are the ornately carved and gilded wooden frame around the titular painting designed by Pietro Paolo Troisi, and the processional statue of the Virgin of Mount Carmel by the Maltese sculptor Andrea Imbroll.

Our Lady of Victories Church - Valletta, Malta
The Our Lady of Victories Church was the first church and building completed in Valletta, Malta. In 1566, following the Great Siege of Malta, Grand Master Jean Parisot de Valette and his Order showed interest to build a church in the name of the Nativity of the Virgin as a form of thanksgiving; the construction was funded by De Valette.
The church was built to commemorate the victory of the Knights of the Order of St John and the Maltese over the Ottoman invaders on 8 September 1565.

Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Mdina Malta 2017
One of the churches at Mdina is dedicated to our Lady of Mount Carmel and once a year the Carmelite friars celebrate the feast with a Solemn High mass and a procession.
Malta - 2013 Part 1
Views of Valletta from the north show the great dome of the Carmelite Church. A wander around the streets of Valletta seeing some lovely architecture and history. We take local bus rides to Rabat and the Tarxien Temples. From Rabat we also explore the walled city of Mdina.
Sliema coastal walk
A walk on the shore along the bays and inlets from St. Julian's to Sliema starting at Spinola Bay and ending near Manoel Island bridge. On the way we pass by the Love Monument at Spinola Bay, Balluta Buildings, the Carmelite Church at Balluta Bay and Grand Master De Redin's St. Julian's Tower in Tower Road, Sliema. The tower is now engulfed by modern buildings but is a stark reminder of centuries gone by when, like her sisters up the coast further west, she stood alone, a solitary outpost on an otherwise desolate rocky shore. Striding Marsamxett Harbour, this curved peninsula was of strategic defensive importance and consequently is dotted with military installations from the Knights' and British periods. We also pass by Il-Fortizza (Fort Sliema) and along Ghar id-Dud and Qui-Si-Sana, beneath Fort Cambridge to Fort Tigne, with its circular tower-keep, at Tigne Point. Fort Tigne was the last major fortification built by the Knights of St. John in Malta. It stands at the mouth of Marsamxett Harbour, guarding the entrance along with Fort St. Elmo across the harbour in Valletta. It was completed in 1795, shortly before the islands fell to Napoleon Bonaparte. The rest of this walk from Fort Tigne onwards goes along the Sliema seafront facing Marsamxett Harbour and Valletta.
