spot Carrara Marble Tour 2017
Carrara Marble Tour is pleased to offer you a terrific off road 4×4 trip in the stunning scenery of the Carrara marble basins, where some scenes of the James Bond Quantum of Solace film were shooted in 2008. With our professional drivers and tour guides, you will experience the thrill of travelling along winding, steep roads (usually inaccessible to most visitors) together with the trucks that, during the working days, transport the marble blocks downhill. A unique, once in a life experience in which you will witness the ongoing battle between man and the majestic mountains that keep this precious material at their inside.

The Most DANGEROUS Italian Road: CARRARA WHITE MARBLES QUARRIES
The Most DANGEROUS Italian Road: CARRARA WHITE MARBLES QUARRIES
► Thanks To AMC TRASPORTI: The marble of Carrara (called by the Romans marmor lunensis, which literally means the marble of Luna, from the name of the Roman colony of the same name) is a special variety of marble, most of it typically pure white-coloured, quarried from the mountain chain of the Apuan Alps in the municipal territory of Carrara, in north-western Tuscany (Province of Massa-Carrara). For its purity in colour and unique fine texture, it is still
today considered as one of most renowned marble variety all over the
world.
The marble quarries extend all over the mountainous area overhanging the lovely town of Carrara and in a great part of the near territory of Versilia (Province of Lucca). It is commonly believed, though not historically documented, that the excavation in the area dates back to the Copper Age, when the Apuan district was populated by its native inhabitants, the Ligurian Apuans.

The Carrara quarries have produced more marble than any other place on Earth. The market as a whole is worth over €1 billion ($1.1 billion) and produces 4 million tons of marble every year, with 13,000 people involved.

STORYLINE
For centuries Carrara has provided sculptors - including Michelangelo - with the world's finest marble. Thanks to new technology more of the precious Italian stone is being mined every year. But the huge slabs are bought increasingly by large companies to line skyscrapers and corporate atriums - pushing marble prices up and out of the artist's reach
