Tarahumara Indians in Mexico's Copper Canyon celebrate Palm Sunday during Semana Santa
For indigenous Tarahumara (Raramuri) Indians in Mexico's remote Copper Canyon, Semana Santa (Easter week) is one of the year's most important holidays. This celebration was held on Palm Sunday, 2010, at Mission Cinco Santos in the tiny village of Cusarare, located just outside of Creel. The melding of original pagan beliefs with Catholicism has resulted in fascinating ceremonies such as the one shown here. To read more about my world travels visit my blog,

Copper Canyon (#5): Cusarare Mission
The missions San Ignacio (Valley of the Mushrooms) and Cusarare are some of the oldest in the Upper Sierra. The most attractive of the two is the one at Cusarare. A museum of all the sacred art collected from all the missions in the Tarahumara was inaugurated on the 31st of July, 2003. The most famous 18th century work of the painter Miguel Correa is exhibited here. The architecture of the Loyola Museum is truly amazing and the most impressive in all of the Copper Canyon.

CASCADA DE BASASEACHI | Private Tour from Creel | Chihuahua
On our second day in Creel, Chihuahua we continue with the adventures and book a tour to the second highest waterfall in Mexico. It's a two hour car ride from Creel to Basaseachi, so we gave ourselves the entire day to explore. It is possible to do the hike on your own, but we do recommend getting a driver to drive you there, seeing as the roads are very, very bad. There are tons of potholes on this one lane road and it is probably safer to have a local that is familiar with the roads drive.
Give yourself about 2 hours to hike down to the bottom and back up, plus what ever time you spend at each view point. It was a pretty epic view from all view points so it's definitely worth making the trip to Basaseachi. It's not as popular as the Cusárare waterfall we visited on the first day in Creel, which you can check out below, but it is a much more epic waterfall and worth the trip.
We booked our hike with a local guide, Omar and were well taken care of by his associate Fransisco.

We were pleasantly surprised with Creel and how much we got to experience in this Pueblo Magico. You can also check out day one in Creel, where we get to explore more of the pueblo, learn about the Tarahumara culture, understand its people, and visit another waterfall, Cascada Cusárare.
