Swainson's Hawk - Cascades Raptor Center
April 20, 2008: As an adult, Taka was brought to UC Davis Veterinary School's raptor center in September, 2001, with an open fracture of the right wrist and possible pelvic fracture, having been found alongside a road. Though originally thought hit by car, x-rays revealed that he had been shot. His wing did not heal with sufficient extension to enable him to fly well enough for hunting or migration. He was transferred to the Cascades Raptor Center, Eugene, Oregon, in April, 2003, from another education program in California. 'Taka' is Japanese for Hawk. Based on his size, it is assumed he is a male.
While migrating in large, insect-seeking flocks through Central and South America, these hawks are very susceptible to mass poisonings from insecticides.
There is much activity and maintenance work at CDC today. Taka is a little nervous, keeping his eye on everything! As an education hawk, he is doing a good job of perching quietly while his handler describes him. This presentation also demonstrates the trust between Taka and his handler.
Set on a wooded hillside in Eugene, Oregon, Cascades Raptor Center is a non-profit nature center and wildlife hospital specializing in birds of prey and other wildlife in their natural habitat through rehabilitation and public education. CRC displays over 60 non-releasable permanent resident birds in large outdoor enclosures.

Cascades Raptor Center 100 Cars for Good Contest
Through wildlife rehabilitation and public education, CRC fosters a connection between people and nature, with the goal of helping the human community learn to value, understand, and respect wildlife.
Rehabilitation: We rescue, treat and release orphaned, sick, and injured birds, primarily raptors, using the highest standards of medical care and facilities possible.
Education: Our programs are designed to build awareness, appreciation, and care of the earth and all its inhabitants. We use 60 non-releasable birds of 33 species to create a positive, first-hand experience of wildlife through visits to the center, presentations at schools, and exhibits at public events.
With only 3 staff members and over 100 volunteers, CRC covers an area larger than the state of Connecticut for both rescue and education. We would use an organization vehicle for rescuing injured birds; transporting them to veterinary clinics and eventually back for release; taking education birds, their perches and carriers to schools; picking up feed and supplies; carrying our booth and displays to events; and more. With an easily identifiable vehicle, even running errands can build community awareness! Having a reliable car will make responding to 24/7 Hotline calls less hair-raising, and having an efficient car will maintain our commitment to sustainability and keep costs down for us.

Great Horned Owl at Cascades Raptor Center
Lorax was found on the ground April 4, 2005, in Pendleton, Oregon, when she was about 3 weeks old. She suffered several fractures to the right wing, and her elbow and wrist bones were damaged when she fell from her very high nest. The fractures to the radius and ulna would have been difficult to fix in an adult bird and nearly impossible in a bird this young, whose bones are still growing. An injury to or near a joint almost always results in loss of mobility, as the healing done by the body results in calcium deposits that inhibit motion. Because she was so young when taken into captivity, she is well socialized to people, which minimizes her stress levels.
