The Venetian Macao (Chinese: 澳門威尼斯人度假村酒店) is a luxury hotel and casino resort in Macau owned by the American Las Vegas Sands company. The Venetian is a 39-story, casino hotel on the Cotai Strip in Macau.
Macau, a special administrative region like Hong Kong, is the only place in China where casinos are legal, and the business has grown at an astounding pace since the government ended the four-decade gambling monopoly of the Hong Kong billionaire Stanley Ho in 2001.
Gambling tourism is Macau's biggest source of revenue, making up about 50% of the economy. Visitors are made up largely of Chinese nationals from the mainland China and Hong Kong. With the entry of large foreign casinos from Las Vegas and Australia, Macau overtook the Las Vegas Strip in gaming revenues in 2007.
Gambling in Macau has been legal since the 1850s when the Portuguese government legalised the activity in the autonomous colony. Since then, Macau has become known worldwide as the Monte Carlo of the Orient.

The main hotel tower was finished in July 2007 and the resort officially opened on 28 August 2007.[1] The resort has 3000 suites, 1,200,000 sq ft (110,000 m2) of convention space, 1,600,000 sq ft (150,000 m2) of retail, 550,000 square feet (51,000 m2) of casino space -- with 3400 slot machines and 800 gambling tables and a 15,000 seat CotaiArena for entertainment and sports events.
The lead architect for the Venetian Macao wereAedas and HKS, Inc. joint venture, who were responsible for the design, coordination and implementation of the project on site.
We got so bored staying in China that we decided to change things up. Now we're in Venice, Italy.
Actually we just crossed the street from our hotel in Macau and now we're visiting the Venetian. So we're still in China.
So even if you're not a huge gambler there is still plenty to do in Cotai Central here in Macau. There are so many hotels that you can visit and every hotel usually has a unique show that they put on. Here at the Venetian you can ride the Gondola and just feel like you're in Italy for an afternoon. Then the hotel we were staying at was having some kind of Shrek parade which you missed out on. I did miss it but Sam loved it. Oh wow, yes! There is just lots of shows and different performances that you can attend in the evenings. So plenty to do aside from gambling.
Coming early in the morning was a really good idea. We basically almost have this whole place to ourselves.

The casino measures 546,000 sq ft (50,700 m2). It is further divided into four themed gaming areas—namely, Golden Fish, Imperial House, Red Dragon and Phoenix. The casino consists of over 6,000 slot machines and 800 gambling tables.
The hotel offers a club called Paiza Club which caters to premium guests. The club comes with its own entrance, lobby, reception, and guest lifts to the rooms. The gaming area of the Paiza Club is divided into individual private gaming rooms each named for notable Asian cities and regions such as Yunnan, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. The guests of the club have exclusive access to the club dining outlet, the Paiza Club Dining & Lounge, which is open 24 hours a day.

Cotai was the result of a major land reclamation project which joined the two islands of Coloane and Taipa, and is part of the Macau government's continuous efforts to expand the region's territory. The reclaimed land in Cotai is to be mainly used for casino developments and Las Vegas Sands Corporation envisioned that their development of several adjacent properties would comprise an area that would resemble the Las Vegas Strip, albeit on a considerably smaller scale.[1][2] Over the past decade, the layout of the Cotai Strip has also slowly developed into a grid like layout with major hotels and casinos (Wynn Palace, MGM Cotai and Galaxy Macau) built not directly connected to the 'strip' as opposed to Las Vegas strip with the majority of major hotels and casinos with front access to the Las Vegas strip.
