Ascensore Castello d'Albertis Montegalletto in Genoa, Italy
The Ascensore Castello d'Albertis Montegalletto in Genoa, Italy is a curiosity that combines narrow-gauge railway and elevator.
The run starts in horizontal way like a (small) train. At half of the way the cabin changes position and starts the vertical run.
The Strangest Elevator In Italy: the Ascensore Castello d'Albertis-Montegalletto, Genoa
Continuing the occasional Weird European Infrastructure Tour: an Italian lift that switches direction from horizontal to vertical. And honestly, until someone pointed it out to me, I could not figure out how this could possibly be done safely. In hindsight, it was kind of obvious.
(By the way, the Ascensore Castello d'Albertis-Montegalletto is known by a few names: I went by the one that seems most commonly used online by both Italian-speaking and English-speaking folk.)

Ascensore Castello d'Albertis-Montegalletto, Genova, Italia - December 28, 2016
Ascensore Castello D'Albertis - Montegalletto is one of 12 mass transit elevators operated by AMT Genova, but what makes this one unique is that it is likely the only elevator in the world that runs horizontally as well as vertically. The vertical run operates similarly to any ordinary elevator and spans 69.33 meters, except that the system is completely automated. There are no buttons to push. The horizontal run is 236.05 meters for Cabin 1 and 233.88 meters for Cabin 2. Speeds are 1.6 meters per second on the vertical and 4.5 on the horizontal run. The horizontal run is considered to be a funicular. I took the 36 bus to the Dogali stop, so my round-trip run on the Ascensore began at the top, resulting a round trip - which is captured in this video - plus a one-way trip on the descent to Via Balbi, which I did not record.
The 12 Ascensores of Genova are mass-transit conveyances and such require a validated ticket for entry and use. For tourists on short trips, tickets are strictly paper - no smartphone apps or RFID (oyster) cards. The best deal for tourists is the 24-hour pass for four people, which costs 9 € (2016).
The entrance at Via Balbi is located diagonally across from the Piazza Principe train station.

Castello d'Albertis - Genova

It closes up the district of Prè, and was part of the parish of St. Thomas. When the castle was built, was recently opened here Circonvallazione upstream, a long chain of avenues that cingendo from the city were intended to homes of wealthy middle class town.
The funicular that turns into a lift/elevator, and other unique modes of transport in Genoa, Italy
Genoa/Genova's unique Ascensore Castello d'Albertis Montegalletto is a funicular railway that turns into a lift/elevator. Genoa also has the Zecca-Righi and Sant'Anna funiculars with charming cars, Art Nouveau stations and breath-taking views at the top. Enjoy x
GENOVA, CASTELLO D'ALBERTIS
Ascensore Montegalletto Funicular Railway. Unique Underground Narrow Gauge Railway. Genoa Tourism.
Ascensore Montegalletto Funicular Railway. Transformer Design. Probably the most unique form of Underground Railway transport in the world !
This is a Underground Narrow Gauge Railway that Transforms into a Lift/Elevator. Although the ascensore castello d'albertis-montegalletto is called a Funicular railway the attraction is there for anyone that enjoys the experience of riding something a little bit different. Genoa in Italy has a handful of Funiculars that transport passengers to the top of the mountain. They are all different and they are all an interesting ride !
The ascensore castello d'albertis-montegalletto underground railway runs directly into the heart of the mountain for 236 metres, transforms, and then goes vertical 69 metrers up to street level just outside the Castello d'Albertis. The engineering is very interesting and it must have been very brave of the design team to propose such a challenging design. Well Done ! ! !
Certainly a minor tourist attraction for Genoa Tourism, as also, the views are magnificent from the grounds of the castle.

D'Albertis Castle, Museum of World Cultures, Genoa, Liguria, Italy, Europe
The Castello d'Albertis, or D'Albertis Castle is a historical residence in Genoa, north-western Italy. It was the home of sea captain Enrico Alberto d'Albertis, and was donated to the city of Genoa on his death in 1932. It currently houses the Museo delle Culture del Mondo (Museum of World Cultures), inaugurated in 2004. D'Albertis designed the castle in the styles as and architectural collage with a Gothic revival appearance inspired by palaces in Florence and castles of Aosta Valley. Erected between 1886 and 1892 under the supervision of Gothic Revivalist Alfredo D'Andrade, the castle is located on the site of a 13th-century fortified area, which had been reinforced in the 16th century. Alberto not only based his design on the city's foundation, he incorporated and preserved the foundations of the bastion and one of the turrets. Inaugurated for the celebrations of 400 years of Columbus' discover of America, it was the first villa-castle built in Genoa. From top of the hill of Monte Galletto (or Montegalletto), one of the hills in the district of Castelletto, the castle dominates Genoa with a view of the Ligurian Sea. The museum includes ethnographic and archaeological findings collected by both Enrico and Luigi Maria d'Albertis during their trips to Africa, America (from Canada to Tierra del Fuego), New Guinea and Oceania. There is a large number of weapons from Sudan and the Zambesi area Chinese spears and European halberds. There are several exemplars of Canadian and American plains indigenous people, made in buffalo and deer leather and covered by porcupine thorns; also findings belonging to the Maya civilization from Honduras are present. It also exhibits models of ships and yachts, nautical instruments, photographs and the volumes of d'Albertis personal library. A separate section dedicated to music (the Museo delle Musiche dei Popoli, Museum of Peoples' Music) exhibits musical instruments from the whole world.
