The castle on the sea is a defensive post in Rapallo , in the metropolitan city of Genoa , located in front of the water mirror at the Vittorio Veneto waterfront. It is also referred to as a medieval castle, erroneous definition given that the construction dates back to the second half of the sixteenth century.
Inside there is also a small chapel dedicated to St. Gaetano built in 1688 with the characteristic dome with bell, clearly visible outside the castle. In the territory it is the symbol for the exception of the Rapallo town and declared Italian national monument by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage .
The construction of the castle of Rapallo is linked to the historical events that affected the then seaside village on July 4, 1549. On that date Rapallo underwent an assault and a subsequent looting by the Turkish admiral Dragut who, in addition to the damage caused by the landing at three different points on the coast, it culminated in the abduction of twenty-two girls of the place, later enslaved by Saracen pirates in Algiers once boarded the ships.
The Rapallo of the second half of the sixteenth century did not provide for a historic city core defended by walls and the only defensive posts consisted of sighting towers along the Rapallo hills and high houses in the marina area. The landing, which took place in the darkness of the night, was therefore quick and easy for the Turkish fleet of the admiral.
On 16 February 1550 the doge of Genoa Luca Spinola reports with a special document to the Podestà of Rapallo that the construction work, with the related expenses, can not be faced by the Genoese republic and therefore everything must be borne by the community alone Rapallo. This communiqué triggered the rebellion of the inhabitants of the Rapallo hinterland, called delle Ville and belonging to the noble and bourgeois class, who even threatened to leave the country. The other inhabitants of the Borgo, of more popular extraction and promoters of the work, but with little funding, then sought a mediation with the villagers with negative results.
Genoa, stale local squabbles, tried a new negotiation with the mediator Capitan Roisecco, moral creator of the castle, which with promises to both parties managed to restore peace among the inhabitants of the city. Another clash was the choice of the actual place of construction of this defensive position: the Villas proposed the hilly area for a greater visual area, while the village was still on a location in the marina area and closer to the historic core.
In its history the castle was the seat of important state organs, practically until the fifties of the twentieth century when it was declared an Italian national monument and purchased by the Municipality of Rapallo. In 1608 it became the headquarters of Rapallo (established in that year detaching itself from the previous control of the Capitaneo of Chiavari ); here the captain took up lodging with relative office, while in the low part a temporary prison was created awaiting trial by the court of Genoa.
A local tradition, inserted among the most famous events during the patronal festivities in honor of Our Lady of Montallegro in the first three days of July, sees the sixteenth-century castle protagonist of a curious fireworks display . On the evening of 3 July, the final evening of religious celebrations, the castle is symbolically burnt with a proven pyrotechnic and smoke - bombing program , passing over the silver ark of the Madonna di Montallegro near the manor on the Rapallo seafront.

Rapallo is one of a string of old-fashioned seaside resorts along the eastern half of the Italian Riviera (called the Riviera di Levante). It is not far from Portofino and with its range of hotels, Rapallo makes a good base for exploring the coast. Bigger and busier than its neighbours, and a little less expensive. Rapallo is convenient for travellers as it is also nearer the autostrada and has more 'stopping' train services. Although it isn't the nearest resort, it is still a handy base for the Portofino promontory, with frequent buses to Camogli, Recco, Santa Margherita and Portofino itself. A car can get to any of these places in well under half an hour.
Rapallo's own attractions shouldn't be overlooked either. A short promenade faces across the water to the large harbour and is flanked by a small medieval castle, used now mainly for exhibitions. Behind the front is a group of interesting old streets laid out on a sort of grid pattern. Rapallo was a Roman settlement. West of the town centre, the other side of the river, stands a small bridge which is certainly worth a look, although it now serves no purpose and crosses only a modern road. This is the Ponte di Annibale - plainly very ancient, even if the connection with Hannibal is less certain. At the back of the town, in the other direction, is the bottom station of a cable-car which goes up to the Sanctuary of Montallegro.
Apart from a visit to the church itself, the top gives access to big views over the coast and some walks. There's also a (rather scenic) golf course at Rapallo, a rare thing to find along this hilly coastline. The railway station is only a short walk from the seafront through the old town centre. Car parking is indicated close to the station and at the west end of the promenade.
Like the other resorts in this bit of Liguria, Rapallo makes a good base for hopping from one seaside town to the next. The railway and summer boat services make it easy to tour the resorts in this area, all of which are pleasant place to visit: Camogli, Santa Margherita Ligure and exclusive Portofino. Keen walkers can explore various footpaths in the regional park of the Portofino promontory, and the seashore monastery San Fruttuoso can be visited either by boat or on foot. More distant, but easily reachable by train are the busy city of Genoa and - to the south - the famous Cinque Terre.
WB Yeats, Max Beerbohm and Ezra Pound all garnered inspiration in Rapallo and it's not difficult to see why. With its bright-blue changing cabins, palm-fringed beach and diminutive 16th-century castle perched above the sea, the town has a poetic and nostalgic air. It's at its busiest on Thursdays, when market stalls fill central Piazza Cile.

Basilica of Sts. Gervasius and Protasius, consecrated in 1118 and restored in the early 17th century. In 1679 a new apse was added, deleting the former Romanesque character of the edifice. It has a leaning bell tower.

The valley of Fontanabuona is a short distance from Rapallo where local slate is mined. The slate has a wide variety of uses. Many pieces are carved by hand and displayed throughout Rapallo and other local villages.
The symbol of Rapallo is without a doubt is the Castello sul Mare (Castle on the Sea). It was erected in 1549 after the town had been plundered by a Turkish pirate named Dragut. The small castle helped to defend Rapallo against future pirate attacks. Today it is used for special events and exhibitions.
The city of Rapallo was the host to two famous treaties signed after World War I. The first one was in 1920 between Italy and the Kingdom of the Serbs, Coats & Slovenia which reshaped the boarders between them. The second was in 1922 between German and Russian Foreign Ministers, ratifying the surrender of all territorial & financial claims after World War I, and it normalized the diplomatic relationship between the two governments.
According to legend, Rapallo’s history goes back to the times of Hannibal, the great enemy of Rome. A Medieval bridge is named after him. It is believed that he crossed this bridge during the second Punic War.
Rapallo is a peaceful place. Testimony of that is a beautiful church built in the 7th century. The Basilica dei Santi Gervasio e Protasio and the campanile housing 12 bells.
Throughout the year, small music groups perform in the early 20th century band shell. The dome ceiling is painted with beautiful frescos.
It is easy to get to Rapallo from either the autostrada, train or by boat.., but after you experience the Rapallo lifestyle for yourself.., you may never want to leave.
