Castillo de Gibralfaro, Málaga Spain 2016.
The prodigious Castillo de Gibralfaro sits mightily on a high hill overseeing Malaga city and port. It dates back to the 10th century and was built by Abd-Al-Rahman II, caliph of Cordoba. Yusef 1, Sultan of Granada, expanded it at the beginning of the 14th century, adding to it a double wall down to the Alcazaba. The castle today is known for its dense ramparts which rise impressively from woods of pine and eucalyptus. These ramparts have been restored in a way that allows you to walk round them, giving you a nice view down into the La Malagueta bullring. The castle breeds a calm and scenic atmosphere that deserves more visitors and admirers.

Castillo de Gibralfaro is a castle located on a hill overlooking city of Malaga in Spain. For a very affordable entrance fee (about 2 euro) you get to see the grounds of this castle and you can walk along the walls.
The views from up there are spectacular but note that to see Malaga Bullring and the port you don’t need to visit the castle. All you have to do is climb the hill up to the castle and there is a great view point almost at the top of the path/walk. Note that the walk is quite steep and it does take some time to get up there.

Places to see in ( Andalusia - Spain ) Castillo de Gibralfaro
The magnificent Castillo de Gibralfaro sits on a high hill overlooking Malaga city and port, and dates back to the 10th century. The image of Gibralfaro is well known: you can see it in both Malaga city and province's seal and flag.
The hill where the Gibralfaro is situated forms part of the Montes de Malaga mountain range, located to the east and north of Malaga city - this land is protected by the Montes' natural park status.
Castillo de Gibralfaro was built in 929AD by Abd-al-Rahman III, Caliph of Cordoba, on a former Phoenician enclosure and lighthouse, from which its name was derived - gebel-faro (Arabic and Greek, meaning rock of the lighthouse). Yusef 1, Sultan of Granada, enlarged it at the beginning of the 14th century, also adding the double wall down to the Alcazaba.
Castillo de Gibralfaro is famous for its three-month siege by the Catholic monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella, which ended only when hunger forced the Malagueños to surrender. Afterwards Ferdinand occupied the site, while his queen took up residence in the town. Interesting historic fact: this was the first conflict in which gunpowder was used by both sides.
