Easy day trip from Prague: KARLSTEJN castle!
Prague autumn is being scarily warm and sunny so we took advantage of it (before the planet self-combusts) and took a train to Srbsko from where we hiked up and down the local hills all the way to Karlstejn, a super cute castle which is ridiculously easy to get to from Prague.

Visit Prague 4 - Prague Castle and Lesser Town
Visit Prague 4: Prague Castle via the Lesser Town. In this film, we leave Charles Bridge and walk up through Prague’s Lesser Town, then stop to admire the view before entering the Prague Castle complex.
This is a Short from my Prague mini-documentary, Visit Prague. This series of 8 short videos covers what to see, recommendations for where to go, where to eat and drink and how to get there and get around if you have just a few days to tour the Czech capital as a tourist on a short visit.
From the narration:
Lesser Town to Castle
Leaving the bridge, we left the Old Town behind and headed through the picturesque Lesser Town which clusters around Prague Castle.
It’s quite a climb heading up Nerudova Street on foot, especially if it’s hot, and there are plenty of cafés you can stop at for refreshment. However, we pressed on and were rewarded with lovely views over the city when we finally reached the top.
From here you can see most of the city, with its population of 1.4 million.
This was the historical capital of Bohemia and
since 1992, the historic centre of Prague has been included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.
Be aware that you have to go through security checks to enter the castle grounds and there can be a queue at busy times.
Castle Grounds
Prague Castle is the largest ancient castle in the world and dates from the 9th century.
The castle buildings represent virtually every architectural style of the last millennium and the last major rebuilding was carried out in the second half of the 18th century.
There are over 1.8 million visitors annually and it is now the official residence of the President of the Czech Republic.
Changing of the Guard
Presidential Guards guard the 3 main entrances to Prague Castle.
The guards are changed hourly.
If you’re here at midday, you might catch the longer ceremonial Changing of the Guard, with a parade accompanied by music.
Castle Ticket & Golden Lane
You can walk around some parts of the castle complex for free but
we bought a ticket allowing us access to historic buildings within the Prague Castle complex.
The ticket included access to Golden Lane, which takes its name from the goldsmiths who lived there in the 17th century.
The lane comprises 11 historic houses, inside which period scenes have been created to show the life of the artisans who once lived and worked in them.
If you venture upstairs, you’ll see an extensive collection of medieval armoury and weapons displayed in the long corridor which runs along the back of the houses.
The Old Royal Palace
We also visited the Old Royal Palace. Vladislav Hall was used for coronations, banquets and jousting from the 16th century and there various other adjoining chambers within the palace.
For example, The Bohemian Chancellery which was the office of the Royal Governors of Bohemia. There’s a great view of the outside of the castle from here.
At the other end of the hall is the Old Diet. This was used for sessions of the Supreme Provincial Court.
A nearby spiral staircase leads up to the New Land Rolls Room, the old repository for land titles, where the walls are covered with the clerks’ coats of arms.
St. George’s Basilica
Near the Old Palace is the early baroque façade of St George’s Basilica, which originated as the second church at Prague Castle.
Inside, the church is mostly Romanesque.
The present Romanesque appearance of the church, with main apse and two steeples, dates back to a reconstruction carried out after a devastating fire which occurred in 1142.
In complete contrast to the rest of the interior, as you leave the church you pass through an early 18th century baroque chapel.
St. Vitus Cathedral
Dominating the centre of the castle complex, is St. Vitus Cathedral.
The first church on this site was founded in 930 and the present-day Gothic Cathedral is actually the third religious building on this site.
Construction of this church began on the 21st of November 1344
and was finally completed nearly 600 years later.
The entire building process came to a halt with the beginning of the Hussite War in the first half of the 15th century and a great fire in 1541 heavily damaged the cathedral.
Through most of the following centuries, the cathedral stood only half-finished.
Work picked up again in the 19th and 20th centuries and was finally finished in 1929.
In fact the entire western half of the cathedral is a neo-Gothic addition and the earlier eastern half only reached as far as the transept and Great South Tower.
You will see some Renaissance and baroque additions to this cathedral but it’s mainly Gothic.
The Cathedral had a tremendous influence on the development of the Late Gothic style in Central Europe including the Stephansdom cathedral in Vienna and Strasbourg Cathedral.

Prague Castle (Czech: Pražský hrad) is the official residence and office of the President of the Czech Republic. Located in the Hradčany district of Prague and dating back to the ninth century, the castle has been a seat of power for kings of Bohemia, Holy Roman emperors, and presidents of Czechoslovakia. The Bohemian Crown Jewels are kept within a hidden room inside it. The Guinness Book of Records lists Prague Castle as the largest ancient castle in the world.[1] It occupies an area of almost 70,000 m2, at about 570 meters in length and an average of about 130 meters wide.
St. Vitus Cathedral (Czech: Katedrála svatého Víta) is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Prague, and the seat of the Archbishop of Prague. The full name of the cathedral is St. Vitus, St. Wenceslas and St. Adalbert Cathedral. This cathedral is an excellent example of Gothic architecture and is the biggest and most important church in the country. Located within Prague Castle and containing the tombs of many Bohemian kings and Holy Roman Emperors, the cathedral is under the ownership of the Czech government as part of the Prague Castle complex.[1] Cathedral dimensions are 124 x 60 meters, the main tower is 96.5 meters high, front towers 82 m, arch height 33.2 m.[2]

Prague Castle
I live in Prague and have visited the castle many times. I love to walk around the area. There are many things to discover each time that you didn't know were there.
It's uphill mostly so prepare with water if it's in the summer time.
If you're visiting in the winter, it gets cold and windy.
There are multiple tours that cover the area.
Make sure to visit St. Vitus and the museum located at the castle if that's your thing.
If you go in the evening after everything is closed, there will be almost no other people or tourists there and you can get some wonderful pictures.
The trams go right up there and the metro also goes to the base with a short walk up of about 10 minutes at normal pace.
Panorama pictures from various points are a must as you get to see for many miles and lots of historical and tourists tic sites can be seen from the top of the hill.
Petrin tower is also nearby about 10-15 minutes walk depending on pace.
For a small fee, you can climb to the top and get a much wider and higher view of Prague.

Prague, At The Heart Of Europe - Documentary
Prague is a magic city. At the geographic centre of Europe, this capital of a now new country boasts an incredible wealth of culture. Nestling amidst the meanders of the Vlatva river, the old city is a stone’s throw from the ultra-modern district of Karlin. The Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Baroque, Art Nouveau and the communist regime have in turn left their mark on the city’s physiognomy. Mozart, Kafka, Mucha and many others have also left traces of their talent. Alternating cultural heritage with more contemporary themes, Pierre Brouwers shows us that Prague is anything but a museum city.

Praha (Czech Republic) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Praha in Czech Republic.
Prague, the Golden City, does full justice to its name. The beauty of this historically rich metropolis on the banks of the Vlatava has been well known for several centuries. One of the city’s many architectural focal points is the Charles Bridge which since the 14th century has connected the old town district with part of the Hradschin, Prague Castle. Prague’s Astronomical Clock is world famous and not only does it display the time, it also shows the date and the corresponding sign of the Zodiac. South of the famous Hradschin Castle is the most ostentatious residence in the city, the Palais Waldstein that is of Late Italian Renaissance design. Beautiful and spacious gardens round off the elegant appearance of the palace that was built between 1624 and 1630. Petrin Hill and its sixty metre tall iron tower that dates back to 1891 is yet another attraction offered by the capital of the Czech Republic. A number of the buildings in the historic Jewish district of Josefov, such as the Old-New Synagogue, have been well preserved and the historic, romantic and enchanting atmosphere of Prague’s Jewish Cemetery has been the subject of several novels. Considering the abundance of its historic monuments it is not surprising that Prague continues to shine out in all the splendour of its glorious and colourful past.

PRAGUE CASTLE WITHOUT TOURISTS - PLEASE READ DESCRIPTION
⤈ ⤈ ⤈ ⤈ ⤈ IMPORTANT NOTICE - PLEASE READ⤈ ⤈ ⤈ ⤈ ⤈
Guys, we try to be as honest as possible, and this time we actually harmed a place, because we didn't mention all the information in the video.
Cafe Tausig (place with view and garden) is an absolute treasure in Prague, but most importantly it is a training place for people with mental disorders. Thanks to this place, people working there can eventually work in regular coffee places or in other positions. It is extremely important that you treat this place with absolute respect to this fact. In may take a bit longer for them to serve you, and things may not run as smooth as in a different place, but YOU HAVE TO RESPECT that!
Also if you are a tour guide, and you are watching our videos (I know you are out there) and then take groups of tourists to these places, you are doing extreme harm, not only to these places but to Prague in general. Please DON'T DO IT!
I have hear horrible stories of how tourists (foreigners and Czechs) are rude to the staff and they have absolute disrespect. So once again I kindly ask you to be respectful and patient. THANK YOU!!
