Aci Castello- Aci Trezza (CT).wmv

The town of Aci Castello developed around the castle, which was built in 1076 by the Normans upon the foundations of a 7th-century Byzantine fortification[3][4]. In 1169, Aci Castello started to expand after an eruption of Mount Etna made the towns in its vicinity uninhabitable. The castle later became the property of the bishops of Catania.
In 1296, Roger of Lauria, admiral of the Aragonese fleet during the War of the Sicilian Vespers, was granted the fief of Aci and its castle as a reward for his faithful service to King Frederick III of Sicily. When relations between the two men soured and di Lauria transferred his loyalties to the Angevins, the castle was besieged and captured by King Frederick and di Lauria stripped of his fiefs. In 1320, the castle and Aci were taken from Roger's descendant, Margaret of Lauria and given to Blasco II de Alagona. Whilst the latter was away defending Palermo from the attacking Angevins, Bertrando di Balzo sacked Aci in his absence.

Catania - Italy is an ancient port city on Sicily's east coast. It sits at the foot of Mt. Etna, an active volcano with trails leading up to the summit. Catania - Italy is Sicily’s second largest city, with a population of around 300,000. It lies on the Ionian Sea, under the shadow of Mount Etna, or “A Muntagna” as the locals refer to it.
Mount Etna is ever-present and has to a large extent shaped both the history and the actual existence of Catania. On several occasions volcanic eruptions destroyed the city, the most devastating of which happened in the 17th Century. In 1669 Catania was covered in lava and then, just 24 years later in 1693 an earthquake shook the town down to its foundations.
Visiting Catania - Italy is quite easy, as the old town centre is relatively small. An ideal starting point would be the main square, Piazza Duomo.
This delightful square and all its surroudning buildings was designed by one man, Giovanni Battista Vaccarini from Palermo

Catania is an Italian city on the east coast of Sicily facing the Ionian Sea. Catania is the capital of the Metropolitan City of Catania, one of the ten biggest cities in Italy. Catania is well known for its historical earthquakes, having been destroyed by catastrophic earthquakes in 1169 and 1693, and for several volcanic eruptions from the neighbouring Mount Etna. Catania is located on the east coast of the island of Sicily, at the foot of Mount Etna. As observed by Strabo, the location of Catania at the foot of Mount Etna has been both a curse and a blessing. Two subterranean rivers run under the city; the Amenano, which surfaces at one single point south of Piazza Duomo, and the Longane (or Lognina).

Visiter Catane, Aci Castello, Acitrezza - Etna3340 - Voyage Sicile
Voyage Sicile
Visiter Catane

Catania The Pearl Of The Ionian Sea
Catania-Sicilia The pearl of the Ionian sea.
Catania is a wonderful combination of ancient and modern. Her history and character is inextricably linked to the formidable form of Mount Etna, who looms over the city like a maternal menace. At the foot of this great volcano, facing the Ionian Sea lies Catania, a Sicilian monument to survival and resilience, defying the ravages of time and nature. Etna has an interesting character, and despite its imposing appearance and destructive potential, is known to many as the good volcano.
According to historic accounts, it is more likely to damage places than people, as its lava flows tend to be slow, giving town inhabitants time to flee its fury. The main casualties are immovable. Homes and monuments risk damage or annihilation like Castle Ursino, a large proportion of which was buried beneath the flow of slow moving but nonetheless deadly floating lava.
Plucky Catania, despite having been rebuilt seven times due to earthquakes and volcanic damage, is rich in folklore, history and beauty. The obvious hazard of living at the foot of a live volcano has some recompense, as the countryside surrounding Etna is fertile and over the centuries has been coveted and conquered.
If Etna has been the cause of Catania's destruction, it has also been a vital source of the construction of the city, as much of the black volcanic rock which characterises Catania's beautiful Baroque architecture was spewed from the heart of Etna. The way in which these past eruptions have formed the land, gives rise to the origins of the city's name. The historian Plutarch suggested that it came from the word Katane meaning grated, referring to the uneven surface of the land surrounding Etna, upon which Catania stands.
In the VIII century B.C, Catania was a Greek colony, subject to the Siracusans and later the Romans. The following Byzantine, Arab and Norman epochs each contributed to its characteristics and culture. Though occupied and invaded over the centuries with the rest of Sicily, Catania has a reputation for being a resilient city, tough on unwanted invaders.
The city's symbol is an elephant, as it is said that in ancient times, Pigmy elephants lived there and chased away enemies of the city's inhabitants. Frederic II commissioned the building of the Ursino Castle there, which became a model of military architecture, and was originally built as a coastal fortress to protect the city as well as the island from unwanted marauders.
Notwithstanding the seven times in which the city has been destroyed or damaged by earthquake or volcanic eruption, Catania, like a headstrong daughter refusing to be subdued, insists on rising from the ashes and continues to thrive. Catania then is a monument to survival as much as being a historic or medieval site.
The history of the city lies in its folklore more than its monuments; in fact the last time the city was rebuilt was in 1700. Town planning has been remodelled according to the Roman style, with straight parallel streets forming a grid, bearing little reminiscence of Medieval, Byzantine, or Arab era's which were an important part of its heritage.

Acireale (Ct).wmv
Soundtrack : Dino Zullo - Mi votu e mi rivotu
Acireale is a coastal city and comune in the north-east of the province of Catania, Sicily, Italy, at the foot of Mount Etna, on the coast of the Ionian Sea, and with mineral waters. It is a diocese, famous for its churches, including the Neo-Gothic St. Peter's Basilica, St. Sebastian's Basilica in the Sicilian Baroque style, and the 17th century Acireale Cathedral; and there is a seminary, for the training of priests. Acireale is also noted for its paintings: the oldest academy in Sicily, the Accademia dei Dafnici e degli Zelanti, is located here.According to tradition, the city's origins trace back to Xiphonia, a mysterious Greek city now completely disappeared. In Roman times there existed another Greek town, Akis, which took part in the Punic Wars. In Ovid's Metamorphoses, there is a great love between Acis, the spirit of the Acis River, and Galatea the sea-nymph. The Acis River is the small stream Fiume di Jaci, flowing past Acireale (the ancient Akis or Acium). In the Middle Ages, the town expanded around the castle (now part of Aci Castello), being known as Jachium under the Byzantines, as Al-Yāj (الياج) under the Arabs and, later, as Aquilia. In 1169 a huge earthquake scattered much of the population towards the mainland, divided between the numerous boroughs of Aci. Another Aquilia was founded in the late 14th century further north, creating the first nucleus of the modern city. The only remains of the medieval Aquilia Nova (New Aquilia) is the Gothic-Lombard style portal of the cathedral. In the 16th century Emperor Charles V freed the city from any feudal ties, creating it as a Crown commune. In the late 16th century the town had around 6,000/7,000 inhabitants. The most ancient document mentioning the Carnival of Acireale dates to 1594. The town expanded its role as a trade center (it was granted the right to hold a Free Market or Fiera Franca), and received numerous new edifices.Acireale was nearly destroyed by an earthquake in 1693, which substantially halted its economical growth. During the Expedition of the Thousand (1861) which freed Sicily from the Kingdom of Naples, Acireale was the first town to rebel against the Bourbons. In 1941, it was bombed by the Allies, resulting in many civilian victims.
