In Memory of Jefferson Thomas
Jefferson Thomas
(1942-2010)
Jefferson Thomas was a track athlete at all-black Dunbar Junior High School in Little Rock when he volunteered to integrate all-white Central High School as a sophomore in 1957.
Mr. Thomas was a quiet, soft spoken, unique, and special person. He had a subtle, infectious sense of humor that served him well throughout his life. He would find that sense of humor and his LOVE for humanity severely tested by the hate and violence directed toward him by some of the white students at Central High School. Mr. Thomas graduated from Central High School in May 1960, and entered Wayne State University in Detroit, as his family relocated to Southern California.
In mid-1961, Mr. Thomas joined his family in Los Angeles, California. There he quickly became active in the NAACP Youth Council as Treasurer, and served as State President of the Progressive Baptist Youth Convention. He attended Los Angeles State College, joined the Student Government, and was elected President of the Associated Engineers.
Mr. Thomas married in 1965 and has one child (Jefferson, Jr.), still living in Los Angeles. Mr. Thomas, Sr. was inducted into the United States Army in 1966. He received training at Fort Riley, Kansas, and was promoted to staff sergeant, before being assigned to duty in South Vietnam, with the 9th Infantry Division. There he served as an infantry squad leader (NCO), and directed numerous field campaigns as they confronted enemy troops. He returned to civilian life in the summer of 1968.
With his father, Mr. Thomas operated the family-owned Retail Sales Business, and attended Los Angeles State College to obtain a Bachelor Degree of Business Administration. Mr. Thomas went to work as an Accounting Clerk and later, Supervisor for Mobil Oil Corporation - Los Angeles Credit Card Center, while still managing the family business.
When Mobil Oil moved its Credit Card Operations to Kansas City, MO, in 1978, Mr. Thomas remained in Los Angeles, and entered Federal Service as an Accounting Clerk with the Department of Defense. The DOD relocated parts of its LA operations to Columbus, Ohio, in 1989. He sold his business and moved to Columbus.
After moving to Columbus, Mr. Thomas served as a member on the Board of Directors for the City of Refuge Learning Academy and the First Church of God Day Care Center. As a part of his continued commitment to serve the local community, Mr. Thomas took time to serve as a volunteer mentor in the Village to Child Program, co-sponsored by Ohio Dominican University. Mr. Thomas is the recipient of an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Ohio Dominican University in recognition of his life-long efforts in human rights and equality
Dr. Thomas is a frequent speaker at numerous high schools, colleges and universities throughout the country, and he is an eager mentor to young people. He is the recipient of numerous awards from local and federal governmental agencies. These awards include the NAACP Spingarn Medal, and Congressional Gold Medal, this Nation's longest-running tradition of honor, for helping make democracy work. He is especially proud of the life-size sculpture of the Little Rock Nine at the Arkansas State Capitol in Little Rock, the first in the state honoring living citizens.

Evolution Lyrics:
Snow white
Someday my prince will come
Someday I'll find my love
And how thrilling that moment will be
When the prince of my dreams comes to me
Cinderella
A dream is a wish your heart makes
When you're fast asleep
In dreams you lose your heartaches
Whatever you wish for, you keep
Sleeping beauty
I know you, I walked with you once upon a dream
I know you, the gleam in your eyes is so familiar a gleam
Yet I know it's true that visions are seldom all they seem
But if I know you, I know what you'll do
You'll love me at once, the way you did once upon a dream
Ariel
I wanna be where the people are
I wanna see, wanna see them dancing
Walking around on those
What do you call 'em? Oh, feet
Up where they walk, up where they run
Up where they stay all day in the sun
Wandering free
Wish I could be, part of that world
Belle
There's something sweet
And almost kind
But he was mean and he was coarse and unrefined
But now he's dear, and so unsure
I wonder why I didn't see it there before
Jasmine
A whole new world
A dazzling place I never knew
But when I'm way up here, it's crystal clear
That now I'm in a whole new world with you
Pocahontas
And you'll never hear the wolf cry to the blue corn moon
For whether we are white or copper skinned
We need to sing with all the voices of the mountains
We need to paint with all the colors of the wind
Mulan
Who is that girl I see, staring straight back at me?
Why is my reflection someone I don't know?
Giselle
How do you know he loves you?
How do you know he's yours?
Well does he leave a little note to tell you you are on his mind?
Send you yellow flowers when the sky is grey? Heyy
That's how you know
That's how you know!
He's your love
Tiana
So I work real hard each and every day
Now things for sure are going my way
Just doing what I do
Look out boys, I'm coming through
And I'm almost there, I'm almost there
People gonna come here from everywhere
And I'm almost there
Rapunzel
7 AM, the usual morning lineup:
Start on the chores and sweep 'til the floor's all clean,
Polish and wax, do laundry, and mop and shine up
Sweep again,
And by then
It's like 7:15.
And so I'll read a book or maybe two or three
I'll add a few new paintings to my gallery
I'll play guitar and knit, and cook and basically
Just wonder when will my life begin?
Merida
When the cold wind's a a-calling
And the sky is clear and bright
Misty mountains sing and beckon, Lead me out ....into the light
I will ride, I will fly
Chase the wind and touch the sky
I will fly
Chase the wind and touch the sky
Anna
For the first time in forever
There'll be magic, there'll be fun
For the first time in forever
I could be noticed by someone
And I know it is totally crazy
To dream I'd find romance
But for the first time in forever
At least I've got a chance
Elsa
Don't let them in don't let them see be the good girl I always had to be
concealed don't feel don't let them know
Let it go let it go And I'll rise like the break of dawn let it go let it go that perfect girl is gone
Here I stand in the light of day
Let the storm rage on
The cold never bothered me anyway

Randsburg Blues Rock in The Joint Thanksgiving Weekend 0254
Photos at
Old West Desert Mountain Town at 3,600 feet (1,104 meters) above sea level (in southern California when as many as 2,000 to 10,000 to 20,000 people camp out in cottages and circle up in RV Round-Ups stretching for thirty miles from Randsburg to Johannesburg along US 395 south to California City, east of Mojave, 2-1/2 hours east of a totally different culture in Los Angeles. Off Roaders, Dirt Bikers and 4 Wheelers, love the basin and range with salt flats and endless twist and turn in the higher elevations of sagebrush hills and desert mountains in the warm southern California chaparral.
On the high end of Main Street in the Living Ghost Town of Randsburg only local artists show in the Randsburg Art Gallery. Randsburg resident population is not 70, not 50, but recently down to 48 people in the heart of this mountain side enclave of Bohemians living on the cool north slope.
Great views extend over mountain ranges Rand, El Paso and southern end of the Sierras to the northwest layering fifty miles deep into the Sierras at the far north of the Owens Valley greatly valued by many Wild West Hollywood movie directors including backgrounds for John Wayne films.
From the wide balcony of the Cottage Hotel at the high end of town, the northeast view looks over the tops of three mountain ranges advancing into lost desert basin and range, layering in greys from light to dark hiding mysteries of pioneers and prospectors of the Audacious Generation struggling against the Wild West impelled by burning visions inspired by travel guides and drawings of the 1850s overland journals telling wild stories of the greatest migration of people in the history of the world. Some of them pared off on the dry eastern drainage of the Sierras. People such as Seldom Seen Slim and desert homesteaders like the prior generations of Scrappy, manager of the Cottage Hotel, happy to be in the area all her life.
Antique phosphate sodas are thankfully not as sweet as many soda pops today.
In the Randsburg Art Gallery a hand painted map of southern California high desert depicts the highest elevation in the continental USA - Mount Whitney 14,495 feet above sea level in the Sequoia National Forest in the southern Sierra Nevada Mountains and a moderate distance to the east-southeast the lowest point in the United States - Death Valley at 282 feet BELOW sea level, too hot and too dry in the summer. In between are military reservations of Fort Irwin desert warfare and armored tank training center, China Lake Naval Weapons Center and Edwards Air Force Base. The map is a fresco 10 foot square. Off map to the northeast in southern Nevada is Nellis Bombing and Gunnery Range and off map to the south is experimental military aircraft development center - Skunk Works, famous since the 1950s with the X-1 to Right Stuff coming together in the X-15.
First Bank of Randsburg was open for six months then failed. Randall Hoot Smith is now the pleasant owner.
Erma Maw - Choctaw Indian Artist.
Scene from Darwin, mining ghost town in southern California. Artist uses as many as thirty layers of paint, many layers use translucent paint.
Randsburg centrally located for hiking in the Sierras of southern Tulare County and eastern Kern County, and also other marvels of the Mojave Desert in southern Inyo County.
Randsburg is about 1200 feet (368 meters) above the much hotter desert floor, hence it is good for overnight stays before heading to Death Valley National Monument or other areas in the Mojave Desert. Only three hours from Los Angeles, Randsburg is also due east of the southern tip of the Sierra.

How To See Your House From Space
Have you ever wondered how you can see your house from space... for free? What are the satellites taking those pictures of Earth anyway? Are these pictures live? Can you walk outside, look up and see yourself on camera... from space?
Universe Today publisher Fraser Cain details the resources out there you can use to watch your house from above.
Based on this article from Universe Today:
----------------
The space age has given us GPS, weather satellites, and astronauts walking on the Moon.
One of my favorite benefits is the fact that we can now see satellite pictures of Earth, for any spot on the planet... for free!
Space exploration plus the internet is a wonderful thing.
There are more than eight-thousand active satellites in space, and many of those have high-powered cameras attached to big telescopes trained on the surface of the Earth.
Head outside any night and you can see these satellites as bright stars passing overhead.
Some are military satellites, taking high resolution images of top secret locations.
But many are scientific and commercial satellites, whose imagery is available free on the internet, if you know where to look.
Want to see satellite images of the whole Earth?
NOAA's Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (or GOES) release images of entire hemispheres of Earth every three hours.
You can see entire weather systems affecting the planet, and get a good idea if it's going to rain this weekend.
If you want more detail, use a tool like Google Earth or Google Maps to see satellite imagery of almost any spot on Earth.
In some places, like cities, the resolution is very high, allowing you to see objects as small as people and cars.
The images you see in Google Maps actually come from commercial satellite mapping companies, like GeoEye or Digital Globe.
They have satellites capable of resolving objects on the surface of the planet as small as forty-five centimeters.
An object like a garbage can, seen from above, would be a single pixel.
You might wonder then, are these live views?
Can you go outside, look up and see yourself in satellite imagery?
Sadly no, it's not live.
Each company only has a few satellites constantly mapping the surface of the planet.
In some cases, the images you see in Google Maps were taken a few months ago, while in other cases it's been years since the images were refreshed.
If you take a careful look at the satellite imagery of your house, you could guess at when the picture was taken based on what's in your yard, and the cars parked out front.
There are a few services that will give you a live view from space.
There are cameras attached to the International Space Station that give you a view of the Earth passing below.
Soon, a company called Urthecast will be connecting HD cameras to the space station. You'll be able to scroll, pan, zoom, and search your way around their video stream.
They'll also be providing developers with access to open source video streams.
We're not quite yet at the live camera broadcast of your backyard from space, but some of us suspect it's only a matter of time.
