Santiago Cathedral is a Roman Catholic church in the city of Bilbao. The temple was originally built during the 14th-15th centuries as Bilbao's main parish church, and was only declared cathedral in 1950 when the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bilbao was officially created. Its origins probably date to well before the foundation of the city in 1300, when Bilbao was little more than a small enclave of fishermen.
The temple is consecrated in honor of the apostle Saint James the Great (Santiago in Spanish), by virtue of being a point of transit for the pilgrims that followed the Northern branch of the Way of Saint James.
Architecturally, the present building is a mixture of styles: from the 15th century Gothic of the cloister and the main vault, where of special interest are the cloister and the beautiful portal that gives access Correo street (Puerta del Angel), to the ostentatious Gothic Revival façade and spire. A curious custom is the addition of stone carvings of local merchants along the buttresses of the main vault. It should not be confused with the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.

La Catedral, consagrada al apóstol Santiago, fue construida en el siglo XV, de estilo gótico, aunque su torre y su fachada son de estilo neogótico.

Construida entre el último cuarto del siglo XIV y principios del XV en estilo gótico. Toma su nombre del patrón de Bilbao, Apóstol Santiago, el Mayor. Durante el siglo XVI se añadieron el retablo mayor y el actual pórtico, ambos en estilo renacentista. La Piedad data del siglo XVII, construida conforme al Clasicismo. En el siglo XIX se reconstruye la fachada dándole su aspecto actual. La torre también data de esta reforma, obra de Severino Achucarro..
La planta de la catedral forma una cruz latina dividida en tres naves, de las cuales la central es de mayor altura, separadas a su vez en cuatro tramos por una serie de pilares con columnas adosadas, coronadas por una bóveda de crucería. La cabecera del templo es de planta poligonal, con girola. La torre de la catedral es de estilo gótico tardío. En el cuerpo superior se encuentran dos ventanales bajo un arco ojival. La torre conserva siete campanas, fundidas en1916. Tiene 15 capillas alojadas entre los contrafuertes. Sus dimensiones son: 50 m de largo, 22 m de ancho y 1.100 m² de superficie.

En el año 2000 se abre al público una remodelada catedral, tras una década de profunda restauración. El templo, construido sobre una iglesia anterior en el corazón de la ciudad histórica, ha tenido un largo recorrido desde su inauguración en el siglo XV hasta nuestro días.

Unlike the architectural transformation of its external façade most of the cathedral’s interior has retained its original form. The church’s main nave and altar, with its precious and exquisite decoration, are a remarkable religious work of art. Bilbao's buildings display a variety of architectural styles, ranging from gothic to contemporary architecture. The Old Town features many of the oldest buildings in the city, as the St. James' Cathedral or the Church of San Antón, included in the borough's coat of arms. Most of the Old Town is a pedestrian zone during the day.
Since the deindustrialization process started in the 1990s, many of the former industrial areas are being transformed into modern public and private spaces designed by several of the world's most renowned architects and artists. The main example is the Guggenheim Museum, located in what was an old dock and wood warehouse. The building, designed by Frank Gehry and inaugurated in October 1997, is considered among architecture experts as one of the most important structures of the last 30 years, and a masterpiece by itself. The museum houses part of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation modern art collection.

La siguiente parada es en el Museo Guggenheim Bilbao, el museo más importante de la ciudad, en el que les damos tips para recorrerlo. Este es el lugar más imperdible qué visitar en Bilbao.
Para finalizar, los llevamos al monte Artxanda en funicular, para terminar la visita en Bilbao País Vasco en uno de los mejores miradores de la ciudad.
