Saint Barbara's Church (Czech: Chrám svaté Barbory) is a Roman Catholic church in Kutná Hora (Bohemia) in the style of a Cathedral, and is sometimes referred to as the Cathedral of St Barbara (Czech: Katedrál sv. panny Barbory).[1] It is one of the most famous Gothic churches in central Europe and it is a UNESCO world heritage site. St Barbara is the patron saint of miners (among others), which was highly appropriate for a town whose wealth was based entirely upon its silver mines.

St. Barbara Church (often incorrectly St. Barbara Cathedral, Czech: Chrám svaté Barbory) in Kutná Hora (Bohemia) is one of the most famous Gothic churches in central Europe and is a world heritage site. Its first architect is claimed to have been Johann Parler.
The construction began in 1388, but work on the cathedral was interrupted several times, making the final work completed in 1905.
Kutna Hora began in 1142 with the settlement of the first Cistercian Monastary in Bohemia, Kloster Sedlitz, brought from the reichsunmittelbar Cistercian Imperial Waldsassen Abbey. By 1260 German miners began to mine for silver in the mountain region, which they named Kuttenberg, and which was part of the monastery property. The name of the mountain is said to have arrived from the miners workclothes garb (the Kutten). Under Abt Heinrich Heidenreich the territory greatly advanced due to the silver mines which gained importance during the economic boom of the 13th century.

Kutna Hora - St. Barbara Church
One of the main reasons we took a day trip to Kutna Hora was to see the beautiful St. Barbara Church. St. Barbara is the Patron saint of miners, and since Kutna Hora was the center of silver mining in Bohemia, this church was not lacking in its construction budget. It sits on the hillside and has fantastic flying buttresses. The interior was very peaceful and even had some very old frescoes featuring people taking part in the daily mining activities. It is one of my favorite churches I have visited in Europe.

Construction began in 1388,[2] but because work on the church was interrupted several times, it was not completed until 1905. The first architect was probably Johann Parler, son of Peter Parler.[2]Work on the building was interrupted for more than 60 years during the Hussite Wars and when work resumed in 1481, Matěj Rejsek, Benedikt Rejt and Mikuláš Parler, assumed responsibility.[2]
The original design was for a much larger church, perhaps twice the size of the present building. Construction, however, depended on the prosperity of the town's silver mines, which became much less productive. So, in 1588, the three-peaked roof had been completed,[2] and a provisional wall was constructed. A little later it was occupied by Jesuits who gradually changed the structure into Baroque style, though parts still remain in Gothic style.[2]
The final process of repair and completion took place at the end of the 19th century, under architects J. Mocker and L. Labler.[2]
Originally there were eight radial chapels with trapezoidal interiors. Later on, the choir was constructed, supported by double-arched flying buttresses.
Internal points of note are the glass windows, altars, pulpits and choir stalls. Medieval frescoes depicting the secular life of the medieval mining town and religious themes have been partially preserved.

Kutna Hora (Czech Republic) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Kutna Hora in the Czech Republic.
Kutna Hora is situated close to Prague and historically is one of the most important cities in the Czech Republic. In the Early Middle Ages the city gained its wealth from the mining of silver ore. In its heyday in the fourteenth century, the city had a population of around a hundred thousand and each year ten thousand miners extracted three million kilograms of silver from seven hundred metres below ground, which was equal to one third of the mined silver in the ancient world. In 1142 a Cistercian monastery was founded in today's Sedlec district along with the adjoining Gothic church of St. Mary, an imposing building with five naves and seven choir chapels. Following the demolition of the church by the Hussites in 1421, it lay in ruins for three hundred years until, in 1699, reconstruction in Baroque Gothic style began. Close to the monastery a cemetery chapel contains a crypt with a bone house that accommodates around forty thousand human skeletons that have been formed into numerous macabre works of art: pyramids, chandeliers, monstrances and the coat of arms of Prince Schwarzenberg are a reminder of the transience of life on Earth. However, in 1713 the Black Death arrived which marked the tragic end of the city’s prosperity that had already begun to decline when the city was twice destroyed by fire during the Hussite Wars and was further crippled due to cheap imports of silver from America. Nevertheless, Kutna Hora still shines resplendent even today.
