DIRECTORS NOTE: It was an exceptionally difficult documentary expedition to undertake. We were a team of 12, shooting underground, in an 100% humidity environment and freezing cold water for many days. Our efforts were rewarded by a spectacle only few have the privilege of seeing. Natural, ethereal beauty untouched by man.
With pride, we present you with ‘THE WONDERS OF DIROS’.

Southern Greece harbors a cool retreat from the unforgiving Mediterranean summer: a place out of time, inviting you to discover the marvels of geology.
In Diros, everybody can be a caveman for the day!
The region of Diros in the southern Peloponnese boasts magnificent beaches and is also home to a couple of massive prehistoric cave complexes, Alepotripa and Vlihada.
Even though only Vlihada (also called Glyfada) is open to the public, it has been wooing visitors for decades. First of all, to discover it, you need to navigate around its water routes in a boat.
From ancient times to recent discovery
The cave of Vlihada has been known to the local community since the early 1900s. However, no one suspected what wonders might be inside until 1949, when Giannis and Maria Petrohilos, founders of the Greek Speleology Society, set out to explore it more thoroughly.
The first underwater expedition took place in 1970 and scientists have now mapped a staggering 2,800 water routes over a surface of 16,700 square meters.
Pottery fragments found near the entrance of the cave suggest that there has been a human presence here since prehistoric times, while animal bones from panthers, hyenas, lions, deer, etc have also been recovered in various parts of the complex.
The cave began to form several hundred thousand years ago. Drop by drop, stalactites and stalagmites were born, creating abstract and mesmerizing formations. The air temperature inside the cave varies from 16 to 19 degrees Celcius throughout the year, while the water temperature doesn’t exceed 14 degrees.
Visitors can go on a wonderful boat tour through maze-like waterways, imposing domes and unbelievable formations. A small portion of the 2.5 km route is done on foot, while the overall visit to the cave lasts at least 40 minutes.

Diros caves, Areopolis, Peloponnese
The caves of Diros near Areopolis (Mani) are regarded as one of the most important speleological findings of our recent times. Touring the caves is conducted with special boats as the major part of the cave (1.5 Km) is full of water, in some cases quite deep. Visitors can walk the rest of the 300 metres on specially built corridors. Like most caves in Greece the stalagmites and stalactites are dated back to some million years ago.

Diros Lake Caves are located on the west coast of the Laconian peninsula in Mani, South Peloponnese, just south of Aeropolis. Its existence has been known since 1900 but in 1949 the systematic exploration began by the founders of the Greek Speleological Society, John and Anna Petrocheilou. Today the known length of the cave is more than 15 km.
Divided into three different parts, its physical entrance has a diameter of only half a meter, very close to the sea, so the access is facilitated by an artificial entry. The formation of the cave is due to the underground Glyfada river flowing at the bottom. It was formed hundreds of thousands of years ago. The water is brackish and 14° C, while the air ranges from 16° to 19° C. The main feature is the wonderful decoration with colorful stalagmites and stalactites which represent forms of animals or humans.
The boat ride for visitors lasts 45 minutes including a short tour. 220 meters east of Glyfada is the Cave Alepotrypa. Discovered in 1958, and has an area of 6,500 meters. The spaces were used as dwellings in later Neolithic period as shown by the findings of skeletons of humans and animals, tools, marble figurines, and vases. This cave is not open to the public.

GYTHION GRECIA (DIROS CAVE)

Located at the top of the Mani between the town of Pirgos Dirou and Areopolis the entrance is a few meters above the sea and a beautiful stone beach. When you arrive at the Caves you buy your 15 euro ticket at the booth and continue driving to the parking lot just outside the entrance. Try to get here early especially in the summer. In the off season you should also come early because it closes early. When you enter the cave you will walk down a stairway to an underground lake where there are boats waiting. You are given a life-vest and then each boat gets a guide who uses poles to journey through the caverns and tunnels, which are eerily lit and adorned with stalactites and stalagmites, many with interesting names. You will pass through some sections just wide enough to allow your boat, where you have to duck your head and then enter into an enormous subterranean room where you can hear the voices of people on other boats in the distance. The air is a comfortable seventy degrees at any time of the year (so bring a sweater or light jacket if you tend to get cold).

Αρεόπολη Λακωνίας / Areopoli of Laconia Greece
