Kesh Caves, Ireland: Caves Of Legends And The Beautiful Entryway To Middle Earth
In the ancient manuscripts and folklore of Ireland, Kesh plays a central role. It is here that the legendary folk known as the Tuatha De Dannans were banished underground. Looking upon the ridge of 16 caves of Kesh in the Bricklieve Mountains of County Sligo, it is easy to see how this location inspired the legends that surround it.
Keshcorran Mountain & The Caves Of Kesh
Keshcorran is the highest hill in the Bricklieve/Curlew area and the 894th highest in Ireland. Keshcorran is the most northerly summit in the Bricklieve/Curlew area and also the most westerly.
Keshcorran Mountain is capped by a large un-opened cairn, known as the pinnacle, which can be seen from many parts of Co. Sligo. Seventeen caves are located on the western side of the mountain.
The hill and it's surroundings feature in a number of legendary tales including a story that tells of the birth of Cormac Mac Art. Cormac Mac Art was the most famous of the legendary kings of Ireland and was born at a well beneath the caves. His mother had given birth to him while trying to escape from Lughaidh Mac Conn who had killed her husband. While they lay sleeping baby Cormac was carried off by a wolf whose den was in a cave now known as Cormac's cave. Cormac was discovered years later playing on all fours outside the caves with wolf cubs. Cormac went on to become a famous High King of Ireland.

Keshcorran Caves - Irland

Mud & magic inside the spectacular Caves of Kesh in Co.Sligo
In a previous video, I showed the cave of Uaigh na gCat in Roscommon. You might recall its entrance as being little more than a hole in the ground.
The Caves of Kesh (near Ballinafad, Co.Sligo) couldn't be more different.
13 or 14 grand arched entrances fill one entire side of a prominent hill. They really are quite spectacular, both to look at and a vantage point from which to view the surrounding landscape.
A few narrow and confined passages run about 40 to 50 metres inside the mountain. I crawled in as far as I could and got truely smothered in mud. But it was worth it. There are some nice caverns inside.
These caves do have one thing in common with Uaigh na gCat. They were also held by our ancestors to be a gateway to the underworld.
There is a legend that Fionn MacCumhaill had to come here to rescue some damsel or other from various old hags. All good fun, I am sure.

Exploring The Caves Of Keash - County Sligo
Only a few miles outside Sligo town, lies the caves of Keash. Sixteen limestone caves that once were the home of bears and wolves.
A recent new walkway at the sloped entrance means that it is now easy to explore the crevices of each cave.

The Magical, Mythical Caves of Keash
Many mythological stories are associated with the Caves of Keash, including the legend that Cormac Mac Art, a famous High King of Ireland was reputedly born and raised in them by a she wolf. Diarmuid and Gráinne are also said to have taken refuge from the vengeful Fionn mac Cumhail in one of the caves and the festival of Lughnasadh, a festival to honour the Celtic God Lugh was also held on the top of this mountain on the last Sunday in July (‘Garland Sunday’). The area around the caves is one of the richest places in Ireland for archaeology and the prehistoric Keshcorran passage tomb crowns the summit of the mountain. Human remains and animal bones of cave bears, arctic lemmings, reindeer and Irish elk have been found here, some dating back 10,000 years. The views are also stunning. I have shot some incredible Black and White photographs in the caves for my upcoming book, In Search of the Goddess Rising

Tuatha De Dannan & the CAVES of KESH: Ireland's GRAND Entryway to Middle Earth.
The sons of Milesius, the Milesians are the (sons of Mil, a descendant of Noah) the ancestors of the modern Irish, are said to be some of the earliest settlers of Ireland. There is evidence that two or three waves of colonization had already reached the island from origins unknown. The Tuatha De Dannan , who were skilled in magic, descended on Ireland in a cloud of mist not long before the arrival of the Milesians and rendered the land invisible to keep the Milesians from reaching shore.
