Soldatna Alaska Centennial Campground and Salmon Fishing
Centennial Park is a bit of “wilderness in the city”. It is a very large wooded park with over a mile of frontage on the Kenai River, and is separated from the adjacent Regional Sports Complex by a steep wooded slope. The campground was first built in the early 1980’s, was expanded to include boat launch and additional campsites throughout the coming decade. New restrooms and fish cleaning stations were provided in 2011. Fish stairs and boardwalks were re-designed and installed in 2013, improving habitat protection along the river.

So we set forth to find him, because a famous person in Alaska is a big deal.
This is the 5th and final video from the Alaska Summer 2013 pentalogy collection.

Kenai River Sockeye Salmon Fishing the Line Soldotna Alaska Redfish
The Kenai is a beautiful river with tons of unfished water. The problem is where you can fish publicly is shoulder to shoulder! I always enjoy heading out to fish the third week of July on the Kenai. Funny thing is everyone thinks the salmon are in the river year round. You better be there when they are in cause you have about a 2 1/2 week window when fishing is decent and about a week window when it is phenomenal. When that time is no one know, but it's amazing when you can be there when the fishing is hot! I have had luck with the 20th of july. One time in about 20 years I got there toward the end of the run, which simply meant I just had to fish up near the Russian, instead of down in Soldotna, but then you get to camp! Lots of crazy crap happens up at the Russian-Kenai confluence (at the Ferry), so just stand back and let the bickering, fights, falls, and illegal antics unfold in front of your eyes! Once I even saw an inflatable go right into the front of the ferry with a couple older gentleman. I would guess 70's. It rocked back and forth for a few second before the force of the current flipped it in half like a taco. One old man was grabbed and the second shot out into the river. He was paddling for his life just out of reach of the fisherman on the other shore.
Then Superman came running down from about a 100 yards up river. He running and stripping off his waders and went down to his t-shirt and underwear. He jumped in and swam in and got the old timer just before he drowned. The old timers paddles were a swim and right before the guy saved him, he was saying he couldn't paddle much more and his head was barely above water. Superman paddled him back and saved that guys life. They say on a log for 30+ minutes with a solar blanket before going back.
I've even been known to stick up for a person or two down at the river. My buddy says were all just like a bunch of bears fighting for a spot. Some people come down thinking they own the whole river, where I think there is room if we make it. I just want to catch a fish. I don't even care if I keep it. I just want to catch 'em.
