Alaska Tour - Kenai, AK - Stop #15
Well, today we took our final drive on our Alaska Tour from Homer to Kenai, AK. It was a short 100 mile trip north and is where we will all break up and travel our own way home!
Kenai, Alaska is known for its great river inlet where the salmon are squeezed down into a fairly narrow area making great ‘Dip Net’ fishing on both banks! Dip Net fishing is where you use a huge 4-5 foot diameter net on a 20 foot long pole to place across the stream and catch fish right into your net! Many local Alaskans come here to catch their yearly allotment during the salmon run up river. For most, that means that the head of the household can catch 25, the wife 10, and each child another 10. Many fill their allotment in just one day!
I flew a couple of quadcopter flights over the area and got some spectacular views of them Dip Net fishing!

Kenai Fjords National Park is a United States National Park established in 1980 by the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act. The park covers an area of 669,984 acres (1,046.85 sq mi; 2,711.33 km2)[1] on the Kenai Peninsula in southcentral Alaska, near the town of Seward. The park contains the Harding Icefield, one of the largest ice fields in the United States. The park is named for the numerous fjords carved by glaciers moving down the mountains from the ice field. The field is the source of at least 38 glaciers, the largest of which is Bear Glacier. The park lies just to the west of Seward, a popular port for cruise ships. Exit Glacier is reachable by road and is a popular tour destination. The remainder of the park is primarily accessible by boat. The fjords are glacial valleys that have been submerged below sea level by a combination of rising sea levels and land subsidence.
Kenai Fjords National Monument was initially designated by President Jimmy Carter on December 1, 1978, using the Antiquities Act, pending final legislation to resolve the allotment of public lands in Alaska. Establishment as a national park followed the passage of the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act in 1980. The park protects the icefield, a narrow fringe of forested land between the mountains and the sea, and the deeply indented coastline. The park is home to a variety of terrestrial and marine mammals, including bears, whales, seals and moose,More info

Homer Alaska Tour of Spit, Shopping, Beautiful Beach & Cruise Port (4K)
Homer Alaska was one of our favorite ports during our June 2017 Alaska cruise aboard the Holland America Amsterdam. There was a free shuttle bus (school buses) provided by HAL (see the ride here: ) that took guests from the pier to the famous Spit area of Homer. Once there, there were plenty of interesting places to shop and peruse. There was even a nice beach that we didn't expect which provided absolutely gorgeous views of the Kachemak Bay.
Other highlights included the City of Homer Port & Harbor marina where we saw a cute River Otter, the Seafarer's Memorial, and the Salty Dawg Saloon. There were tons of visitors from other parts of Alaska there as well, taking advantage of the Homer campgrounds. =======================

Hope, Alaska
Thank you for joining me on this stop on my 2017 Journey To Alaska. Today by the use of pictures and video clips we will check out Hope, Alaska.
Currently home to fewer than 200 residents, Hope was once packed with 3,000-all drawn by gold fever. In 1889, a few years before the Klondike gold rush began to lure people north, a miner discovered nuggets in nearby Resurrection Creek. Soon prospectors found gold in nearby Six Mile Creek, and the rush to Turnagain Arm began. According to local lore, this growing community of tents and cabins chose to name their town after the youngest rusher to step off the next boat-17-year-old Percy Hope. Whether or not the story is true, the name certainly evokes the optimism of every prospector who arrived in Hope in search of a fortune.
