Larry Csonka Shows Affordable Fishing on the Kenai Peninsula
Many parts of Alaska offer spectacular fishing, hunting, and incredible views... but may hard to get to, and expensive to access. The Kenai Peninsula is an exception to that. Larry Csonka and Audrey Bradshaw explain why this part of Alaska is more affordable, but just as amazing as the rest of the state.

Checking out bears with Bearfoot Tours | Homer Alaska
While in Homer, we had the pleasure of going on an Airplane tour of Lake Clark National Park. We landed on the beach, and hiked around looking at Bears. It was an amazing experience, if you are going to be in Homer, give Bearfoot Tours a call....
Bearfoot Tours Alaska
Get a real up close view of grizzly bears in their natural habitat. Hop aboard a 6 person airplane, travel across the bay to a remote National Park and walk around with the grizzlies. It's like being in a zoo without bars. On your flight you may see whales in the water below, glaciers and volcanoes. Your pilot will guarantee that you will see some bears
Things to know:
• Located in Homer Alaska.
• Boots are provided.
• Plan for 4-6 hours.
• You may land on several different beaches until you find bears.
• The pilot has been flying for years and has an excellent safety record.
• Park rangers are sometimes present at Lake Clark National Park to give out Jr. Ranger badges and answer questions.
• The pilot is very knowledgeable about the bears and their environment.
• Bring snacks, sunscreen, bug spray and be prepared for changing weather.
This is a mind-blowing experience. If you truly want to see what Alaska is all about this is a must. Starting with the breathtaking views of glaciers and volcanoes to the exciting beach landing in the plane and finally watching the grizzly bears just yards away catching fish, munching on grass and cubs following their mothers, this is something you don't want to miss. After spending several months in Alaska we couldn't find anything to top this adventure and I bet you won't either.

WHERE and HOW to fish from shore on the Homer spit AK Alaska cod flounder
Drive to the end of the spit for fishing. There is parking near Lands End and walk down to the beach. Try to cast out to the piling / platform as far as you can. Herring works the best. If you haven't got a bite in 10 minutes either you have no bait or you need new bait. They love fresh bait. Change your bait often if you want to catch a bunch of fish. (If you use any of this information, please post a response on your success!) I use a size #6 hook, not too big. I put on some weight, too heavy and the fish won't budge it, too light and it gets blown away (about the size from my pinkie tip to the second knuckle. I put on a quarter size chunk or a little bigger and cast gently. Herring is a soft meat and too much force when casting and it shoots off. Cast out gently, let it drop, real in any slack and wait for a tug, then wait a few seconds and tug back. Real in and do it again. Low tide is the best as you can get closer to the pilings. The super super minus tides has the end piling up to the edge of the water and fisherman can have a blast on these ultra low tides reeling in cod, when the tide is this low casting lures works well. I like using a Twister Tail and jig head if I do cast. It is cheap and works great, plus you can get then easily in any of the 50 states and Canada. These work well and are CHEAP!!! No need to lose a $5-$8 lure when you get snagged. A fifty cent jobber works just as good or better and who really cares when you get snagged. You can lose 10-15 of these set up for every pixie or vibrax lost. I use a white twister tail, but I an sure any color works. I use at least a 1/8 oz jig head or bigger. I have never been skunked down there and is a great way to spend an afternoon. I catch gray cod, flounder, tomcod, sometime silvers are caught on the end casting spoons. I prefer to just relax and use cut bait. fishing toward slack tide is best otherwise the current can be too much and low tide is the best as you can get closer to the pilings. All the water that goes in and out of Kachemak Bay pushes past the spit.
If you are going to be in Homer and are waiting to head out on a halibut charter to just want something to do this can be fun. This is a cheap and enjoyable time. If your spouse is on a charter and you have the kids this would be a great way to spend part of the day, plus you don't have to worry about them breaking anything in the gift shops. The view is spectacular from there as well. You will see a ton of boats and the mountains just across. You won't catch any Halibut (atleast) I've never seen it done but have heard of a few, so they might be in there or they may just be fish stories. At certain times of the year fish can be caught in the lagoon. If the silvers are in you'll see a bunch of fisherman and this is best when the tide is coming up, in the lagoon eggs, vibrax or a pixie can be a good choice(not cut bait), but the end of the spit still sees way more action and to me is way more fun!
Michael Jeff
When the seas are too rough to go out on the charter and the charters say no, and you need something to do while your in Homer beside hitting the gift shops again. You can catch some bottom fish and still have an Alaskan fish dinner, just probably not halibut. I have never tried hotdogs but I know I have tipped my halibut hooks with them and caught fish. Try Hotdogs if you want to save a few bucks. I always just used the cheapest hotdog brand I could buy. Any viscera would work as well just make sure you keep your bait changed regularly and bring plenty of weight/lead to cast your bait out there. Hi and low tides work great! You can also hit the cleaning tables and help clean some fish at the cleaning stations if your board. I know most everyone throws out the fish and you salvage a decent amount of meat off the fish. Most everyone will gladly let you take the cheeks. You could probably get 5 pounds of halibut from going through and cleaning up someone elses limit. Cheap way to get some halibut and they are just going to throw it out. When I come in I always love it when someone offers to help clean a few of my fish, but some people are all high and mighty and don't want anyone even looking at their fish. These are typically the people that hog the cleaning stations and take FOREVER to clean their fish. Just talk to them and if they're nice they'll have no issue showing you how its done and letting you dig out a few cheeks and cleaning out some meat off the soft stomach area that is often discarded at the stations.
The flounders are a nice tasting white meat with no worms in them that I have seen. If I keep a cod I fillet it and the use my knife to take out any worms. Some people just cook them warm enough and eat them. I let the cod go or give them away as I hate digging out worms and have enough halibut. ( Gryga )
After a drink at the Salty Dog Saloon just walk.
Best of Luck and Tight Lines!!!
