Ljubljana's central market
The City of Ljubljana has decided to modernise Ljubljana's central market, build an underground garage and set up a friendly place for both visitors and sellers. We received the prestigious international Gubbio award in the category of architecture for the renovation of Congress Square and the revitalisation of archaeological parks. The square regained its importance as a central area for numerous cultural and sporting events. It is also a place where foreign dignitaries are hosted. The renovation of the central market has a similar significance for its future development. The purpose of the renovation is to improve living and working conditions, as well as the quality of urban space in the vicinity of the Dragon Bridge and Plečnik’s market. At the same time, it is important to preserve cultural heritage and everything that one of the most eminent locations in Ljubljana has to offer. So, what is new? The indoor market will be located in the atrium of the extension of the Mahr House, while the city administration will be located on the upper floors. The relocation of the textile market to the indoor market will facilitate additional space for the central market and make it even greener. The parking garage will provide better working conditions in the central market area, easier access for visitors and a car park for residents. Environmental impacts will also be reduced, as exhaust gases will be diverted through the roof of the extension. Ljubljana has been following the trends of other green European cities that provide car parks at the edge of pedestrian zones. The central market will operate smoothly, with only minor adjustments during construction. The textile market will be located at Petkovšek Embankment, plants on Butcher’s Bridge, vegetables and fruits at Pogačarjev Square, and at Ciril Metod and Krek Square, if necessary. The part of the market located in Plečnik’s Arcades will operate smoothly, as it lies a sufficient distance from the construction site. When the project is finished, it will facilitate a bigger green market according to modern sanitary standards, new premises in the Mahr House and a museum centre depicting archaeology of medieval Ljubljana; and at the same time traffic and logistics will be regulated. The current parking area will become a lively place with a wide range of services for all visitors and particularly for you, the citizens of Ljubljana.
Ljubljana Central Market
Apart from fruits, vegetables, and spices and herbs, Ljubljana's picturesque main open-air market, designed by architect Jože Plečnik, offers almost all kinds of food, including a variety of Slovenian delicacies, such as the Karst prosciutto and the potica cake. Ljubljana's Central Market is more than just a place to shop. Traditionally, it has also been a place for the locals to meet and enjoy themselves together.

MLEKOMAT MILK VENDING MACHINE in Ljubljana
Part of it looked like a normal vending machine, with different slots where you could put in a number and an empty bottle would be proffered to you by the machine out of a slot. The other half of this contraption was different from a typical vending machine and is why that bottle you may have just bought needed to be empty.
On each side of the cow’s smiling face were two spouts. You could bring your own milk jug, place it under the spout…and get milk! The white liquid of Mlekomat is fresh raw cow milk from a local dairy farm, where it sounds like cows happily graze in pastures.

Slovenia's capital and largest city also happens to be one of Europe's greenest and most liveable capitals. Indeed, the European Commission awarded Ljubljana with the coveted Green Capital of Europe title for 2016. Car traffic is restricted in the centre, leaving the leafy banks of the emerald-green BledRiver, which flows through the city's heart, free for pedestrians and cyclists.

Visit Ljubljana, the capital city of Slovenia, and explore the places in its surroundings.
Besides having everything that all the other modern capitals have, Ljubljana succeeded in maintaining the relaxed atmosphere of a small city. This picturesque and very vibrant city is full of surprises. The region that besides Ljubljana comprises 25 other municipalities is noted for its traditional hospitality, diverse nature, nice towns, castles, quality traditional restaurants and village churches with their rich artistic legacy.
The Central Slovenia is the place where the alpine and karst landscapes meet. Thus, various unique natural and cultural particularities were created. Some of these are the Ljubljana Marshes, an area of wetlands and peat bogs known for its prehistoric pile dwellers and for its rare animal and vegetal species, the high mountain plateau Velika planina situated in the Kamnik Alps, noted for its ski centre and for being the oldest dairy herdsmen’s settlement in Europe, interesting subterranean caves, karstic fields and the mysterious forests of the Polhov Gradec and Posavje hills that abound with tourist farms.
You will definitely not be bored. The various cultural events are marked by the richness of the tradition as well as by the modern creativity. Forests, rivers and lakes offer great possibilities of an active holiday in the open air. You can choose between hiking, cycling, exploring the nature, hunting, fishing and during the winter, also between skiing and cross-country skiing. There are also some well-maintained golf courses.
Ljubljana and the Central Slovenia region are a perfect destination for relaxed and active holidays.
