Canoe Museum Peterborough - Canada HD Travel Channel
The canoe was the most important means of transport in Canada and many areas of the USA up to the 19th century. The Canadian Canoe museum (Canadian canoe museum) in Peterborough, Ontario is the only museum in North America specialized in canoes.
In the meanwhile the collection contains over 600 canoes and kayaks and mainly concentrates on the canoes of the indigenous people of Canada such as the Algonkin, the Mi'kmaq or the Abenaki. Artisans are keeping the traditional skills alive. Since 2002, canoe builders of the First Nations and Inuit are invited to pass on their knowledge and skills. Also stages in the history like the use of a Mi'kmaq canoe become again alive.
There is a scientific collection of historical canoes meant for various purposes. You see canoes of the indigenous peoples handmade and decorated with beautiful ornaments, built for hunting and war, but also rare deep-sea canoes or the canoes of the explorers. There are also luxury canoes, as the canoe of 1904 with gramophone, used by a generation that did get into a canoe to enjoy themselves.
A traditional Mi'kmaq wigwam or equipment of the land-hungry pioneers, once breaking up into the vastness of the North is displayed.
Modern canoes for Olympic sports disciplines, of course, all made in Canada, complete the collection. Thus, for example, the whitewater kayak Model Obsession II, which was built and used by the Canadian kayaking champion Monika Moisander-Gillespie in 1998 at the World Cup in Germany, or the Singles Racing Canoe Delta Model used by Olympic canoe athlete John Wood in his last international race at World Masters Games 1985.

Liftlock Bed and Breakfast, Peterborough - Canada HD Travel Channel
The Liftlock Bed and Breakfast led by Mrs. Doreen Davies is about 5 minutes from downtown Peterborough, right at Trent Severn Waterway. The 3 suites are located in single cottages on the spacious plant. During our stay Mrs. Davis had four dogs, two deer and a goose. The suites are bright, spacious and technically up-to-date. The breakfast is excellent. Although it is not far from downtown Peterborough, you can enjoy the tranquility. It is also an ideal starting point for canoeing.
The main attraction in Peterborough is the Peterborough Lift Lock, the highest hydraulic boat lift in the world. Less well known is Canada's only Canoe Museum which is well worth visiting.

Peterborough Lift Lock - The Highest of it's Type in The World!
A quick stop at the Peterborough Lift Lock, in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, along the 240 mile long Trent Severn Waterway.
The Peterborough Lift Lock is the highest of it's type in the world, with an average lift of 65'. It is also only one of five of it's type in the world, with one other being at Kirkfield, also along the Trent Severn Waterway. This is also the largest un-reinforced concrete structure in the world! Not bad for a 113 years of age :-)

531 King St Peterborough Open House Video Tour
Walking up the interlock front pathway of 531 King Street, one can see that this charming red brick century house and its columned front porch has retained much of its original character, and through an inviting entryway, is a stunningly updated 4 bedroom home.
Freshly painted walls in soft neutral tones, and large windows that allow for abundant natural light, maintain a bright, airy feel throughout. The spacious living room is open to the kitchen area, and pocket doors maintain privacy between these two rooms when needed.
The open concept kitchen and the adjacent dining area are gorgeous entertaining and family spaces, and showcase pot, pendant, and under cabinet lighting; stainless steel appliances; quartz countertops; a centre island with breakfast seating and a double under mount sink with goose neck faucet; and cabinetry with upper moldings and plenty of cupboard and pantry storage.
The new hardwood floors have been carefully chosen to reflect the original flooring, and can be found throughout most the home. Original features that have been retained include door trims, window casings, and baseboards, as well some of the interior doors.
Off the kitchen is a combined laundry and mud room with front load washer and dryer; quartz counter, custom back splash, and lots of cabinetry storage. From here is a walk-out onto a newly built tiered deck and access to the backyard and driveway.
Completing the main level is a well-appointed powder room off the foyer, updated with a space-saving modern vanity and a glass-tiled back splash.
Another original feature is the wood railing along the staircase to the second level landing, which has a hidden storage niche and a large window brightening the space.
The second level features three graciously sized bedrooms, the first of which has a bay window overlooking the tree-lined street. There is also a large walk-in storage closet; a 4-pc washroom updated with a floating vanity as well as ceramic floors and bath area; and a beautiful sun room with a wooden ceiling and wall-to-wall windows with gorgeous views of the surrounding greenery.
Through a French door is the staircase to a third level loft that has been converted into the master suite. A private, personal haven to unwind in at the end of the day, this tranquil retreat has a ceiling fan for air circulation; a huge walk-in closet; and a spa-like 5-pc ensuite with a French door entry, his and her floating vanities, a freestanding soaker tub, ceramic floors, and a glass-enclosed shower area with rain shower.
The lower level showcases Berber broadloom on the staircase and throughout its huge recreation space, and also features two separate storage rooms - one which has access to the back yard - and a 2-pc washroom.
Stunningly renovated, and enjoying a great central location within The Avenues neighbourhood, this century home is within walking distance to Peterborough’s downtown, it’s amazing array of local shops, restaurants and entertainment, as well as its beautiful waterfront, parks and trails.

438 Brioux Ave, Peterborough - Open House Video Tour
Welcome to 438 Brioux Avenue, a three bedroom century home with a great central location in south Peterborough.
This home features its original brick exterior, as well as many original interior details; ample driveway parking; a covered front porch with a wood-panelled ceiling, a recently stained floor, and a brick half wall with lattice detailing; a front entry door with a retractable screen; and a fenced backyard shaded by mature trees, as well as having a storage shed and a deck with built-in seating.
Freshly painted throughout - and a harmonious blend of the past and the present - the home still retains some of its original wood details, which include most of the door and window trims, interior doors, extra-deep wood baseboards, as well as the existing wood flooring. The window shapes and sizes are also characteristic of the era, and this home also has a lower level with a recreation area and a bonus room finished with carpeting, as well as a combined mechanical/storage/laundry room with washer and dryer.
The entrance foyer is finished with easy-care luxury vinyl flooring that flows through to the kitchen, and the foyer features a double-sized coat closet and a wood staircase to the upper level. The living and dining rooms both have oak hardwood flooring that has been refinished and very large windows - while the dining room has the ambient lighting of a contemporary pendant-style light fixture. In addition, all the light fixtures throughout the main and upper level have been updated.
The kitchen has been beautifully renovated with a gorgeous modern design. Solid wood cabinetry with a white finish and soft closing hardware is topped with quartz counters, and the white dishwasher blends to maintain a sleek, seamless look. The kitchen also features a stainless steel double under mount sink, oven with smooth cooktop, and a fridge - and there is also a built-into-the wall pantry, as well as a walk-out onto the backyard deck.
The upper level features refinished pine flooring throughout, and three spacious bedrooms - all with walk-in style closets. Just like the kitchen, the washroom has been updated with a sleek modern design, and showcases hexagonal-shaped floor tiles; a tiled bath/shower area with rain and hand-held shower heads; updated baseboards; and a sold wood vanity with a white finished, as well as two under mount basins.
This home is within the catchment areas of Roger Neilson Public School, St. John-Peterborough Catholic Elementary School, Kenner Collegiate Vocational Institute and Intermediate School, and Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School; as well as Prince of Wales Public School, St. Anne Catholic Elementary School, Adam Scott Collegiate Vocational Institute, and St. Peter Catholic Secondary School for their French Immersion programs.

For a lovely city of Peterborough
It was from the fortress at Longthorpe that the legendary Legio IX Hispana (Ninth Legion of Spaniards) set out to battle Queen Boudica when her Iceni tribe rose in revolt against the Romans in 61. And it was back to Longthorpe that the legion fled after being ambushed by Boudica, with 80 per cent of its soldiers dead. Its general Quintus Petillius Cerialis realised he would be unable to hold the fort with such diminished manpower, so a smaller stronghold was built inside the original, less than half its size.
The Romans were replaced by the Anglo-Saxons, who spread from Germany during the fifth century, and it is to them that Peterborough owes its direct origins. until 870 when invading Vikings reputedly burnt it to the ground and massacred the monks. It wasn’t refounded again until 97
In the shadow of the abbey, a small village was born, Medehamstede
The first person to chronicle the history of Peterborough, the Benedictine monk Hugh Candidus, wrote during the 12th century that it was “built in a fair spot, and a goodly, because on the one side it is rich in fenland, and in goodly waters, and on the other it has the abundance of ploughlands and woodlands with many fertile meads and pastures”.
Henry VIII closed all the monasteries and abbeys in England. Peterborough Abbey was closed in 1539. However in 1541 the abbey church was made a cathedral. Also in 1541 a school called the Kings school was founded.
1536 – Katharine of Aragon, first wife and queen of Henry VIII, is buried in the monastic church.
1587 -Mary Queen of Scots was buried in Peterborough Cathedral
The Peterborough of today is a diverse and ever-growing modern city.
Live the Aragon experience/Katharine of England Project & Catherine of Aragon Project are a nonprofit organization working to promote the city of Peterborough and the figure of Katharine of Aragon, Queen of England.

Places to see in ( Peterborough - UK ) Peterborough Cathedral
Peterborough Cathedral, properly the Cathedral Church of St Peter, St Paul and St Andrew – also known as Saint Peter's Cathedral in the United Kingdom – is the seat of the Anglican Bishop of Peterborough, dedicated to Saint Peter, Saint Paul and Saint Andrew, whose statues look down from the three high gables of the famous West Front. Although it was founded in the Anglo-Saxon period, its architecture Peterborough Cathedral is mainly Norman, following a rebuilding in the 12th century. With Durham and Ely Cathedrals, Peterborough Cathedral is one of the most important 12th-century buildings in England to have remained largely intact, despite extensions and restoration.
Peterborough Cathedral is known for its imposing Early English Gothic West Front (façade) which, with its three enormous arches, is without architectural precedent and with no direct successor. The appearance is slightly asymmetrical, as one of the two towers that rise from behind the façade was never completed (the tower on the right as one faces the building), but this is only visible from a distance.
It is believed that Peterborough Cathedral originally had a set of over thirty misericords dating from the fourteenth century. However, only three now survive.
