Pontignano Monastery, Ponte a Bozzone, Castelnuovo Berardenga, Siena, Tuscany, Italy, Europe
The Charterhouse of Sain Peter, also called the Pontignano Charterhouse, is a religious building located in Pontignano, near Ponte a Bozzone, in the municipality of Castelnuovo Berardenga, in the province of Siena. The Charterhouse of Saint Peter in Pontignano was one of three in the Sienese territory together with that of Maggiano and that, today disappeared of Belriguardo. It was founded in 1343 by Bindo di Falcone Petroni who also assigned for the maintenance of the goods placed in the cellars of Cellole and Misciano. After his project was approved by the Bishop of Siena Donosdeo Malavolti, the Petroni, entrusted the task of building the monastery to a Carthusian monk of Aquitaine, Brother Amerigo, deputy of the Grenoble chapter, with the commitment that the monastery could host twelve monks and three lay brothers. In 1353 Petroni made a will and left all his possessions to the Carthusian monks of Pontignano. In 1385 it was equipped with a series of walls. The cenoby suffered much damage during the Siena War (1554-1555) when it was sacked and half destroyed so much that a restructuring was necessary. The work was completed in 1607 when it was reconstructed by Archbishop Camillo Borghesi. Some artistic works date back to this period, such as the S. Romualdo genuflesso by the Forlì painter Antonio Fanzaresi. In 1784 it was suppressed following the Leopoldine laws. The Camaldolese hermits of Monte Celso tried to rescue it, but in 1810 it was again suppressed by Napoleon. The ecclesiastical activity was not interrupted only thanks to the transfer to Pontignano of the parish of San Martino a Cellole. After several changes of ownership, in 1959 thanks to the passion and commitment of the Sienese Mario Bracci, constitutional judge and Rector of the University of Siena, the monastery was purchased and transformed into a university by the same university. The structure is now used for both conferences and stays. Among the multitude of lodgings offered, the ancient cells of the friars stand out, from which large apartments have been created. Only part of the structures remain of the medieval monastic complex, above all in correspondence of the church. The church, dedicated to St. Peter, although greatly transformed and enriched inside is the structure that mainly allows the glimpse of the original characters. The plant has a single hall covered with two cross vaults. In correspondence of the façade the wall facing appears to be much more accurate than in the sides and in the end wall where it gradually loses in regularity. The interior openings are characterized by extreme simplicity of forms such as the two rectangular windows that opened on the bottom whose archivolts are not connected to any of the architectural practices in use in the Siena area of the fourteenth century but derive directly from the romantic style. After the sixteenth-century looting, the church was entirely covered with frescoes by Bernardino Poccetti, Stefano Cassini, Orazio Porta and Domenico Brugieri, and a wooden choir was built by Domenico Atticciati. In this period the cloister was also built in a typically late-Renaissance style where the well is located and where the church stands. On the right side is the palace which, towards the garden, has a double loggia. A third cloister, the largest, is located behind the church and can be accessed from the outside through a small but elegant porch; the arcade runs around the entire perimeter and presents frescoes by Bernardino Poccetti depicting Stories of the Passion and Death of San Brunone, and the typical cells of the Carthusian monks are placed on three sides. In the garden, a large fish pond and vegetable gardens show off. In the church the frescoes referable to Poccetti depict Stories of the Virgin, of the Passione, of San Giovanni Battista and of San Brunone. Still at Poccetti there are the frescoes of the great cloister and the refectory (Ultima cena). Other pictorial cycles were executed by Giuseppe Nicola Nasini in the Cappellone, where there is also a Crucifixion created by Francesco Vanni and in the chapel of Sant'Agnese. Finally, it is worth mentioning the S. Romualdo genuflesso by Antonio Fanzaresi.

Italy Travel Guide | Certosa Di Pavia By Drone | HD Aerial Footage V.2
The Certosa di Pavia is a monastery and complex in Lombardy, northern Italy, situated near a small town of the same name in the Province of Pavia, 8 km north of Pavia. Built in 1396-1495, it was once located on the border of a large hunting park belonging to the Visconti family of Milan, of which today only scattered parts remain. It is one of the largest monasteries in Italy.
Certosa is the Italian name for a house of the cloistered monastic order of Carthusians founded by St. Bruno in 1044 at Grande Chartreuse. Though the Carthusians in their early centuries were known for their seclusion and asceticism and the plainness of their architecture, the Certosa is renowned for the exuberance of its architecture, in both the Gothic and Renaissance styles, and for its collection of artworks which are particularly representative of the region. This video was shot with a DJI Inspire2 Drone with a Zenmuse X5S camera.
The church is built on a Latin cross plan, with a nave, two aisles and transept, typical of Gothic architecture. The chancel terminates with an apse. It is covered by crossed vaults on Gothic arches and is inspired, on a reduced scale, by the Duomo of Milan. The vaults are alternatively decorated with geometrical shapes and starry skies. The transept and the main chapel end with square-plan chapels with smaller, semi-circular apses on three sides.
The façade of the church is famous for its exuberant decorations, typical of Lombard architecture, every part being decorated with reliefs, inlaid marble and statues. Sculptors who worked on it include Cristoforo Mantegazza and Giovanni Antonio Amadeo himself. In addition to applied sculpture, the facade itself has a rich sculptural quality because of the contrast between richly textured surfaces, projecting buttresses, horizontal courses and arched openings, some of which are shadowed, while those in the small belfries are open to the sky.
In 1492 Gian Giacomo Dolcebuono took up the construction, assisted on site, for he was cocurrently occupied with the cathedrals at Pavia and at Milan and other churches, by his inseparable collaborator on both cathedrals, Giovanni Antonio Amadeo. In their hands the project was thoroughly redesigned.[5] Scores of artists were involved. The classicist style portal is by Benedetto Briosco (1501). The porch has a large arch of classicist form resting on paired Corinthian columns which are each surmounted by a very strongly modelled cornice on which the arch rests, the construction being derived from the Classical, used by Brunelleschi, and employed here for a bold and striking effect. The decoration is of bas-reliefs illustrating the History of the Certosa. Above the central arch is a shallow balcony of three arches, above which rises the central window.

Italy by Drone | Santa Caterina del Sasso Monastery | Lake Maggiore
Clinging to a rock face directly overhanging the lake, the Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso is certainly one of the most charming sights of Lago Maggiore. The entrance to the church is through a portico consisting of four round, renaissance-style arches. The structure of the current building is truly unique, the fusion of three chapels, originally built separately in three different eras. There are numerous pictorial cycles both inside and outside the Church, mainly covering the period running between the 14th and the 19th century. Art and history merge wonderfully in this most striking of natural frames, almost a balcony leaning out towards the Borromeo Gulf, Stresa and the islands.
Lake Maggiore is a long, thin lake on the south side of the Alps, shared by Italy’s Piedmont and Lombardy regions and Switzerland’s Ticino canton. It’s noted for its picturesque surroundings of greenery-filled mountains. The 3 tiny, popular Borromean Islands, with terraced gardens and aristocratic villas, can be reached by boat from Stresa, one of the larger lake towns, in Piedmont.

The Mysteries of The Certosa of Pavia Monastery - 5K Drone footage
Gian Galeazzo Visconti, hereditary lord and first Duke of Milan, commissioned the building of the Certosa to the architect Marco Solari, inaugurating the works and laying the foundation stone on August 27, 1396, as recorded by a bas-relief on the facade. The location was strategically chosen midway between Milan and Pavia, the second city of the Duchy, where the Duke held his court.
The interior of the church.
The church, the last edifice of the complex to be built, was to be the family mausoleum of the Visconti. It was designed as a grand structure with a nave and two aisles, a type unusual for the Carthusian Order. The nave, in the Gothic style, was completed in 1465.
However, since the foundation, the Renaissance had spread in Italy, and the rest of the edifice was built according to the new style, redesigned by Giovanni Solari continued by his son Guiniforte Solari and including some new cloisters. Solari was followed as director of the works by Giovanni Antonio Amadeo, (1481-1499). The church was consecrated on May 3, 1497. The lower part of the façade was not completed until 1507.
The construction contract obliged the monks to use part of the revenue of the lands held in benefice to the monastery to continue to improve the edifice. Consequently, the Certosa includes a huge collection of artworks of all centuries from the 15th to the 18th.
In 1782, the Carthusians were expelled by the Emperor Joseph II of Austria, and were succeeded at the Certosa by the Cistercians in 1784 and then by the Carmelites in 1789. In 1810 the monastery was closed until the Carthusians reacquired it in 1843. In 1866 it was declared a National Monument and sequestrated by the Italian State, although some Benedictines resided there until 1880. The monks currently living in the monastery are Cistercians admitted to it in the 1960s.
In August 1946 the illegally exhumed body of Benito Mussolini was discovered in the complex. Two Franciscan friars were charged with assisting in the concealment of the body.
