Athens is the capital of Greece. It was also at the heart of Ancient Greece, a powerful civilization and empire. The city is still dominated by 5th-century BC landmarks, including the Acropolis, a hilltop citadel topped with ancient buildings like the colonnaded Parthenon temple. The Acropolis Museum, along with the National Archaeological Museum, preserves sculptures, vases, jewelry and more from Ancient Greece.
Greece is a country in southeastern Europe with thousands of islands throughout the Aegean and Ionian seas. Influential in ancient times, it's often called the cradle of Western civilization. Changing of the Guard at Syntagma, Athens, Greece - unedited
Yeah. I am terrible with a video camera in my hands. I apologize for the shakiness. But this was still cool to me anyway! Enjoy the band and the guard! The video is only good for the first half -- the second half is just footage of trying to get a better shot of the guard and saying dumb stuff, so its kind of annoying to watch.
Changing of Guards, Athens (2017)
The changing of guards in Athens in front of the Unknown Soldier monument, at Syntagma Square, before the Hellenic Parliament.
The Evzones, or Evzoni (Greek: Εύζωνες, Εύζωνοι), is the name of several historical elite light infantry and mountain units of the Greek Army. Today, it refers to the members of the Presidential Guard an elite ceremonial unit that guards the Greek Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Though the Presidential Guard is a primarily ceremonial unit, all Evzones are volunteers drawn from the Hellenic Army's Infantry Corps. Prospective Evzones are initially identified at the Infantry Recruit Training Centres during Basic Training; there is a minimum height requirement of 1.95 m (6' 5) to join.
The unit is known for its uniform, which has evolved from the clothes worn by the klephts who fought the Ottoman occupation of Greece. The most visible item of this uniform is the fustanella, a kilt-like garment. Their distinctive dress turned them into a popular image for the Greek soldier, especially among foreigners.

Athens, Greece - Changing of the Guards Ceremony !
There are variations in this ceremony, based on when they take place. We had hoped to catch the full, elaborate ceremony that only happens on Sundays and for special events, but were unable to because of timing. Nevertheless, this week-day, summer ceremony was most enjoyable and just as important.
During summer the basic tunic color is brown, whereas it is blue during the winter months and all-white, with more accessories during the special events/Sunday ceremony.
The two regular guards must stand immobile at their designated areas for one hour; no movement whatsoever. When the guards are replaced, certain exaggerated leg movements that are part of the ceremony, are done to gently stimulate the circulation after that prolonged period of immobilization.
After the ceremony, a commanding officer gently wipes the face area of perspiration from each stationed guard. Before the ceremony, we are allowed to pose for photos in front of either two guards, with a commanding officer present to ensure we don't get too close, etc. Before the ceremony begins we are asked to form two sections, allowing room about 6 feet or more of room for the full guard regiment to do their walking to the area of the Tomb of the Unknown soldier. The entire ceremony takes place in Syntagma Square at the Monument of the Unknown Soldier in front of the Hellenic Parliament and the Presidential Mansion.
Here is a link to the event that covers any info I may have forgotten to mention:
As always, Ed does the video filming and any narrations heard; I do the editing, etc. and uploading.
Changing of the Guard Ceremony,Greek Athens???????? (2019)
Greek guards or “Evzones” are members of the Presidential Guard found outside the Hellenic Parliament. They have become synonymous with the city of Athens and were originally founded in 1868 as a regiment of the Greek army. It is a high honour for a soldier to be selected to join the Evzones.
They guard the grave of the Unknown Soldier that represents the common memory of all unknown soldiers killed at war. The changing of the Greek guards occurs every day at the top of the hour.

Changing of the Guards ceremony on Pontian Greek Genocide Memory Day
The Changing of the Guards ceremony was held at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Athens, with the Evzones of the Presidential Guard dressed in the traditional costume of the Pontic Greeks, during the official event for the Pontian Greek Genocide Memory Day.
Annually on May 19 in Greece and around the world, memorial services are held to honor memory of the Pontian Greek Genocide victims. In 1994 the Hellenic Parliament recognized and condemned the genocide of more than 600 thousand Pontian Greeks. Records kept mainly by priests show a minimum 350,000 Pontian Greeks exterminated by Turkish troops and Kurdish militias during 1915-1923. Other sources including foreign missionaries mention 500,000 deaths, most through deportation and forced marches into the Anatolian desert. Greek cities (Pafra, Samsous, Kerasous, and Trapezous) endured massacres and deportations that destroyed their populations. The Pontic Genocide is one of the darkest moments in Greece’s history and has been recognized by Armenia, Greece, Cyprus, Sweden and the Artsakh Republic.

Changing of the Guard in Athens - FULL VIDEO (Athens, Greece)
Most countries seem to have a Tomb of the Unknown Soldier these days and where you find a Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, you will typically find an amusing Changing of the Guard!
They seem to change guard each hour. There are two guards in total and also one guy who tells tourists off for doing things wrong lol. When a tourist just something to upset the guards, the guards will hit their rifle against the ground to signal the helper guy. He will then proceed to tell the tourist off and inform them of the rules. Luckily, the helper guy speaks English! lol... He also tidies up the guards and makes their stances appear acceptable for the viewing public. Like many places in Greece, the area is home to a very sleepy stray dog!
The Changing of the Guards in Athens Greece: Every Sunday morning at 11 am, people gather in Syntagma Square to watch the official changing of the guards, the military unit whose members stand proudly in perfect stillness in front of the Hellenic Parliament. There are of course changings every hour in the day, but on Sundays it is the official ceremony with the official costums. The Evzones is a special unit of the Hellenic Army, also known as Tsoliades, who guard the Monument of the Unknown Soldier in front of the Hellenic Parliament and the Presidential Mansion. Through the historical movement of Greece, the Evzones have become symbols of bravery and courage for the Greek people. The Presidential Guard, as the unit is now called, was constituted in 1868 and has taken many names through centuries (Guard of the Flag, Royal Guard, etc). The duties of the soldiers are part of a ceremonial nature. Every soldier guards for about an hour, 3 times in total every 48 hours. Throughout these 60 minutes, they have to stand perfectly still until it is time to switch with another guard. During the changing, they work in pairs so they can perfectly coordinate their moves. The steps that the official ceremony requires at the time of changing are carried out in really slow motion to protect their blood circulation after 60 min of immobility. The soldiers of the Presidential Guard are selected according to their height, excellent physical condition and psychological state as well as character and morality, as they follow a hard training before they become part of this honorary unit. The training lasts for one month and includes exercises to keep the body and mind still. Apart from staying still, the soldiers must also not make any face or eye move and must not show any expression. Their uniform of the Presidential Guard has a historical meaning. It refers to the uniform of the Kleftes and Armatoloi, two groups of Greek warriors during the War of Independence i(1821) against the Ottomans. In fact, the white skirt of the uniform has 400 folds to represent the 400 years of Ottoman occupation over the Greeks.
