Chefchaouen or The Blue Pearl is a gorgeous mountain city in northeastern Morocco.
It's no wonder that tourists flock here — this humble town is the embodiment of almost every Moroccan cliché. The picturesque medina, set against the dramatic backdrop of the Rif Mountains, is filled with white-washed homes with distinctive, powder-blue accents, and the call to prayer rings out of several mosques around the town in chorus. If you've got a few days to relax from the rigors of travel, this is a good place to do it.
Tourism in Chaouen is also driven by its reputation as centre of the marijuana plantations region in North Morocco. Drugs are widespread and somehow tolerated, but touts trying to sell to tourists are also very annoying.
Spanish is the foreign language mostly spoken by the population, while French is the language of higher education.

--------------------------------------------------
The medina is the focal point of interest for most visitors to Chefchaouen. Walking around the town with its whitewashed walls, originally decorated in this style by Jewish immigrants, can be a nice change to the hustle and bustle of the cities of Marrakech, Rabat, and Fez.
The waterfall (Ras el Maa) to the east of the medina is a meeting point for local residents who come to cool off, chat and do their laundry (including carpets on sunny sundays). The café nearby is rather expensive, however it's a nice change from the main square.
The ruins of an old mosque (Jemaa Bouzafar), on a hill behind the waterfall, overlook the medina and its crumbling tower offers great views of the town. Was restored in around 2013.
The Kasbah. Looks quite interesting from the outside, but there isn't much to see inside. The place is well preserved. There's the tower and the prison amongst others that's worth a visit, and the courtyard is green and almost alien amdist the mountain setting. Should only be an option if you're either bored or want to get away from the bustle outside. 10 MAD.
The hill of the Hotel Atlas is a good viewpoint on the town and the valley, especially on sunsets. It can be reached from the south gate of the medina (Bab el-Ain) by climbing the road coasting the medina on the west side until the east gate (Bab Souk), and then uphill, crossing the old cemetery on a rocky path.

---------------------------------------------------
Take a hike through the scenic Rif Mountains. There is a pathway leading up into the mountains just behind the waterfall frequented by backpackers. Don't mind the vast marijuana plantations; the farmers and goat herders that work them are used to tourists and will either ignore you or try to sell you hash. See Stay safe below.
A strenuous hike up Jebel al-Kalaa (the peak immediately overlooking the town) is fun, but can take up to 9 hours round trip and goes by (and if you're lucky/unlucky, through) big marijuana plantations. The route is not well marked (with white and yellow), and you might have to trail blaze for parts of it if you lose the trail. Start by following the road up the southeastern valley, from where you'll get a good view of town, and look for the markings up the mountain. Bring plenty of water, and some snacks.
Hike over the mountain to Azilane. Not for novices as there's a long winding ascent and descent but is worth a day, or two days with a stay at the Gite. Stunning views all the way and far from the madding crowd. From the gate near the waterfall follow the city wall around then start following the dirt track when you pass the campsite. This track takes you over the other side of the mountain and eventually after an hour's descent you can follow the signs for the Azilane Gite where Abdel Kader and family will greet you with hugs, tagines and good vibes. A glimpse into a timeless rural way of life.
The public laundry in Chefchaouen, Morocco
The local people of Chefchaouen frequently bring their laundry to this gathering place, where a few women from the village will wash everything by hand, for a fee, before draping it to dry in local trees.
Top 5 Places to Visit in Northern Morocco
Back in the fall of 2013, I visited Morocco for the second time and spent five days exploring the northern part of the country. We based ourselves out of the city of Tangier and took day trips to visit all of the places you’re going to see in this video. In this video, I’m going to walk you through the top 5 places to visit in northern Morocco. Are you ready? Let’s go!
My Film Making Kit ►
Asilah, which is located about thirty kilometers south of Tangier, or roughly a forty-minute drive. This former Phoenician settlement dates back to 15oo B.C., and in its history has been a part of both Portugal and Spain in addition to Morocco most recently. Asilah is a fortified town, and its bastions, ramparts, and gate works are still fully intact. The bastions give the town a unique, secluded feel, and are the perfect place to catch Asilah’s spectacular sunsets. Asilah hosts annual music, arts, and culture festivals, including the International Festival, which features art exhibitions and jazz and Moroccan music, and a world-famous mural-painting festival.
Caves of Hercules, also known as Les Grottes d’Hercule. Located about 14 kilometers west of Tangier, or about 30 minutes by car, these caves are steeped in legend. According to legend, these grottos are where the mythological hero rested after he completed the twelve labors that ensured his immortality. Inside, these partially man-made caves are massive, and you can walk through to many other caves. Much of the cavern’s interior was created while quarrying for millstone, which left marks that are still visible. The cave’s most distinctive feature is its opening to the sea, the Map of Africa, which resembles the continent of Africa in reverse and changes color throughout the day as the tides shift and the time changes.
Chefchaouen, known as “Morocco’s Blue City,” which gets its nickname from the beautiful, blue-tinged buildings that the city is well-known for. Chefchaouen’s Medina, or old Arab quarter, is a colorful and vibrant labryinth of narrow streets and alleys that is best explored by simply getting lost and wandering on foot, so be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes. If you want to avoid the tourist traps of the main square when you’re ready to eat, check out Tissemlal Restaurant in the Casa Hassan Hotel. It serves up mouthwatering local foods for reasonable prices, and is perfect for groups of all sizes.
Tangier, my home base during my time in northern Morocco. Beyond the gates of the medina, you’ll find hundreds of winding cobblestone streets, along which you’ll find lots of shops, open markets, restaurants, tea shops, and hotels. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes; the street layout is complex and there are some uphill climbs. At some point, take a few minutes to kick back with a mint tea and do some people watching at one of Tangier’s open-air cafes. Cafe culture is king in Tangier! For a pair of great souvenirs, buy a jalaba, which is a traditional jalaba gown, and traditional leather balghas, which are high-quality, heelless slippers that come in a variety of colors. If you can’t make it to the Sahara, I suggest going to Tangier Beach and spending 5 Euros to go on a thirty-minute camel ride. The ride is bumpy, but worth it! For the best dining in the city, I highly recommend Riad Tanja, which features live music every night and serves delicious moroccan tangines in an intimate dining space, and El Morocco Club, where you’ll eat mouthwatering Moroccan fusion cuisine.
Tetouan, one of Morocco’s two major ports on the Mediterranean, which lies just a few miles south of the Strait of Gibraltar and sixty kilometers east-southeast of Tangier. The city’s Berber name literally translates to “the eyes.” Tetouan’s medina is a UNESCO World Heritage site. There, you can find craftsmen like jewelers, weavers, and leather workers, and street vendors who try to sell carpets to tourists. Another point of interest in the city is the Royal Palace, which sits along a public square near one of the entrances to the medina.

Chefchaouen (شفشاون, also Chaouen, Chawen, Xauen, or The Blue Pearl) is a gorgeous mountain city in northeastern Morocco. It's no wonder that tourists flock here—this humble town is the embodiment of almost every Moroccan cliché.
Chefchaouen – or Chaouen, as it is often called by Moroccans – is a popular tourist destination because of its proximity to Tangier and the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. There are approximately two hundred hotels catering to the summer influx of European tourists. One distinction possessed by Chefchaouen is its blue-rinsed houses and buildings.
Chefchaouen is a popular shopping destination as well, as it offers many native handicrafts that are not available elsewhere in Morocco, such as wool garments and woven blankets. The goat cheese native to the area is also popular with tourists. The countryside around it has a reputation for being a prolific source of kief. The Chefchaouen region is one of the main producers of cannabis in Morocco. A nearby attraction is the Kef Toghobeit Cave, one of the deepest caves in Africa.
Chefchaouen's blue walls are a popular subject of interest. There are several theories as to why the walls were painted blue. One popular theory is that the blue keeps mosquitos away, another is that Jews introduced the blue when they took refuge from Hitler in the 1930s. The blue is said to symbolize the sky and heaven, and serve as a reminder to lead a spiritual life. However, according to some locals, the walls were mandated to be painted blue simply to attract tourists at some point in the 1970s. The growing tourist industry is geared especially towards Spanish tourists, who are numerous during great Catholic feasts like Semana Santa and Christmas.
The beauty of Chefchaouen's mountainous surroundings are enhanced by the contrast of the brightly painted medina (old town). It is this beauty and the relaxed atmosphere of the town that makes Chefchaouen very attractive to visitors. The main square in the medina is lined with cafes and filled to the brim with locals and tourist mingling easily.
If you are looking for sports or peaceful hiking tours, Chefchaouen is the ideal starting point to branch out in the villages and the surrounding mountains of the Rif with a local guide who knows well the region or just by yourself.
Accommodation can be tight in the peak periods (mid-July to September) so it's advisable to arrive early or book ahead in these periods. A stroll through the Medina will reveal dozens of cheap hotels, starting from Dh 40 per night for a single. Many of these hotels have roof terraces. The local specialty is baissara (which very few restaurants actually serve), but you'll also find the usual staples such as tajine (vegetable stew with goat or sheep), harira (tomato soup), kofte (meatballs) and tagras (fish). The Salada Marroqui is a salad of cucumber and tomatoes, while salada variada includes eggs. The region is also well known for olives and olive oil, and for goat cheese, which is sold on display in various shops.
( Chefchaouen - Morocco ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Chefchaouen . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Chefchaouen - Morocco

beyondTabu travelled to Morocco's Rif Mountains to look into the economic and social effects that Hashish (locally known as Kif) has on the country, it's citizens and specifically, the farmers that grow marijuana.
We've taken measures to protect identities, due to extreme fear of being purposefully arrested/ targeted by the authorities for speaking to us.
............
N.B. In the section where Abdul speaks about his income from the industry, he states he makes 2.5 Million Dirham, but meant 25 Thousand Dirham. The same applies for the next line 1.5 Million Dirham but he means 15 Thousand Dirham.
Due to high illiteracy rates in the rural areas, it's a common mistake made when referring to larger figures.
