10 Best Places to Visit in Morocco.
Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman may have given the world Casablanca, but there is much more to see in Morocco than its largest city. This Atlantic coast country gives travelers the opportunity to experience life in an ancient Arabic culture, sunning on beaches or snow skiing in the mountains. Whether rambling through ancient medinas, sampling cuisine at a local souq or relaxing in the sun at a white-washed seaside town, the past is always present in this diverse and colorful country. An overview of the best places to visit in Morocco:
10. Sidi Ifni
9. Rabat
8. Meknes
7. Chefchaouen
6. Asilah
5. Essaouira
4. Fez

5. Chefchaouen
Chefchaouen or Chaouen is a city in northwest Morocco. It is thechief town of the province of the same name, and is noted for its buildings in shades of blue.
4. Ait Ben Haddou
Aït Benhaddou is an ighrem (fortified village in English) (ksar in Arabic), along the former caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech in present-day Morocco. Most citizens attracted by the tourist trade live in more modern dwellings in a village on the other side of the river.
3. Essaouira
Essaouira, formerly known as Mogador, is a city in the western Moroccan economic region of Marrakesh-Safi, on the Atlantic coast. The modern name means the little rampart, a reference to the fortress walls that still enclose part of the city.

The Hassan II Mosque or Grande Mosquée Hassan II is a mosque in Casablanca, Morocco. It is the largest mosque in Morocco and the 13th largest in the world.Completed in 1993, it was designed by Michel Pinseau and built by Bouygues. Top 5 Places to Visit in Northern Morocco
Back in the fall of 2013, I visited Morocco for the second time and spent five days exploring the northern part of the country. We based ourselves out of the city of Tangier and took day trips to visit all of the places you’re going to see in this video. In this video, I’m going to walk you through the top 5 places to visit in northern Morocco. Are you ready? Let’s go!

Asilah, which is located about thirty kilometers south of Tangier, or roughly a forty-minute drive. This former Phoenician settlement dates back to 15oo B.C., and in its history has been a part of both Portugal and Spain in addition to Morocco most recently. Asilah is a fortified town, and its bastions, ramparts, and gate works are still fully intact. The bastions give the town a unique, secluded feel, and are the perfect place to catch Asilah’s spectacular sunsets. Asilah hosts annual music, arts, and culture festivals, including the International Festival, which features art exhibitions and jazz and Moroccan music, and a world-famous mural-painting festival.
Caves of Hercules, also known as Les Grottes d’Hercule. Located about 14 kilometers west of Tangier, or about 30 minutes by car, these caves are steeped in legend. According to legend, these grottos are where the mythological hero rested after he completed the twelve labors that ensured his immortality. Inside, these partially man-made caves are massive, and you can walk through to many other caves. Much of the cavern’s interior was created while quarrying for millstone, which left marks that are still visible. The cave’s most distinctive feature is its opening to the sea, the Map of Africa, which resembles the continent of Africa in reverse and changes color throughout the day as the tides shift and the time changes.
Chefchaouen, known as “Morocco’s Blue City,” which gets its nickname from the beautiful, blue-tinged buildings that the city is well-known for. Chefchaouen’s Medina, or old Arab quarter, is a colorful and vibrant labryinth of narrow streets and alleys that is best explored by simply getting lost and wandering on foot, so be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes. If you want to avoid the tourist traps of the main square when you’re ready to eat, check out Tissemlal Restaurant in the Casa Hassan Hotel. It serves up mouthwatering local foods for reasonable prices, and is perfect for groups of all sizes.
Tangier, my home base during my time in northern Morocco. Beyond the gates of the medina, you’ll find hundreds of winding cobblestone streets, along which you’ll find lots of shops, open markets, restaurants, tea shops, and hotels. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes; the street layout is complex and there are some uphill climbs. At some point, take a few minutes to kick back with a mint tea and do some people watching at one of Tangier’s open-air cafes. Cafe culture is king in Tangier! For a pair of great souvenirs, buy a jalaba, which is a traditional jalaba gown, and traditional leather balghas, which are high-quality, heelless slippers that come in a variety of colors. If you can’t make it to the Sahara, I suggest going to Tangier Beach and spending 5 Euros to go on a thirty-minute camel ride. The ride is bumpy, but worth it! For the best dining in the city, I highly recommend Riad Tanja, which features live music every night and serves delicious moroccan tangines in an intimate dining space, and El Morocco Club, where you’ll eat mouthwatering Moroccan fusion cuisine.
Tetouan, one of Morocco’s two major ports on the Mediterranean, which lies just a few miles south of the Strait of Gibraltar and sixty kilometers east-southeast of Tangier. The city’s Berber name literally translates to “the eyes.” Tetouan’s medina is a UNESCO World Heritage site. There, you can find craftsmen like jewelers, weavers, and leather workers, and street vendors who try to sell carpets to tourists. Another point of interest in the city is the Royal Palace, which sits along a public square near one of the entrances to the medina.
I hope this video has inspired you to check out this amazing north African country.
