Tasting Chateau d'Yquem, Sauternes, Bordeaux, France, 2001:
Tasting this magnificent sweet white wine with Moet Hennessy Chateau d'Yquem's Managing Director Pierre Lurton, also the Director at Cheval Blanc, and winemaker Sandrine Garbay, was a rare opportunity to gain insight into the crafting of a perfect wine.
As it turns out, this was a classic growing season with normally warm temperatures by day and cool during the evening, resulting in ripe grapes by late August. This opened the door to more humid conditions by mid September, unleashing botrytis, resulting in the highest concentration of sugars they had ever seen. The harvest began in late September and lasted through late October, the vineyard staff making several passes, each concentrating only on those grapes ready to be picked. While sugar levels were historically high, the wine retained a very high level of acidity at 4.5g/l, offering that perfect balance between sugar and acidity.

Château d'Yquem. So, how do you go about pronouncing Château d'Yquem. Well. Château, you know about chateau, don't you? Many omit to say the D. The complete chateau name is Château d'Yquem many do omit the D, saying Château Yquem. Chateau Yquem is perfectly fine. Y in French forms the sound EE. so EE KEM. Château d'Yquem. 1811 Chateau d'Yquem sets new record for the Most Valuable Bottle of White Wine in the World
On Tuesday 26th July 2011 a new Guinness World Record was set for the most valuable bottle of white wine ever sold. The bottle of 1811 Château d'Yquem was sold by London fine and rare wine specialists, The Antique Wine Company, to the wine connoisseur and private collector Mr Christian Vanneque, for his new restaurant in Bali, Indonesia, for a total of £75,000 ($US 117,000).
The quality of the 1811 is unparalleled and the vintage encapsulates all that Château d'Yquem epitomises. Chateau d'Yquem is one of the most esteemed and highly sought after Chateaux in the world and sits at the top of a hill near Sauternes, Bordeaux.

James visits Château Yquem on a cool, rainy morning to taste the 2010 from barrel with winemaker Sandrine Garbay, one of the few women enologists working for top name estates.
Chateau d'Yquem Sauternes uitleg
Château d'Yquem is het beroemdste wijngoed ter wereld voor zoete witte wijn. De wijngaarden (102 ha) en het château liggen in het dorpje Sauternes in de wijnstreek Bordeaux.
De wijn wordt gemaakt van de druivensoorten sémillon (80%) en sauvignon blanc (20%). Door het specifieke (micro)klimaat van Sauternes ondergaan de druiven de zogenoemde nobele rotting (veroorzaakt door de schimmel Botrytis cinerea). Hierdoor krijgt de wijn een unieke zoetheid, maar is het rendement in termen van opbrengst uitzonderlijk laag (het vocht uit de druiven gaat namelijk vrijwel geheel verloren). Door beide gevolgen is de prijs van deze wijn zeer hoog.
In de classificatie van 1855 is Sauternes als enige dorp buiten de Médoc opgenomen. In die classificatie heeft Château d'Yquem als enige de classificatie Premier Cru Supérieur gekregen, een speciaal voor Yquem ingestelde klasse.

Quant à mon goût, si constamment sollicité, agressé, dérouté, enchanté, déshonoré, négligé, il n'a qu'une seule référence parce qu'il ne saurait y en avoir d'autre, le Château d'Yquem. L'apothéose du goût. Je n'appelle pas l'Yquem un vin puisqu'il existe des vins et que l'Yquem est unique. Je préfère le mot nectar (breuvage des dieux), et si j'en trouve un plus noble, j'aurais moins honte de notre vocabulaire étroit qui se prête si mal aux superlatifs. Frédéric Dard
Ce film nous permet de pénétrer au sein d'un des domaines les plus prestigieux au monde. Notre guide est Alexandre Lur Saluces lui-même, accompagné et interrogé par Jean Paul Kauffmann, les deux hommes se connaissent d'ailleurs bien puisqu'ils ont signé un livre ensemble : La Morale d'Yquem.
Ces visites ont été filmées en 2000, millésime dont nous suivons pas à pas le déroulement en débutant assez logiquement par les travaux de taille de la vigne en hiver. Parallèlement aux travaux dans la vigne tout au long de l'année, nous pénétrons dans les chais et dans le mythique caveau des vieux millésimes. Nous sommes ainsi conviés à partager tous les soucis d'une année jusqu'aux vendanges, vendanges qui, en 2000, furent particulièrement délicates en sauternais.
L'intérêt de ce film est de dépasser l'approche touristique basique pour nous faire partager la vie et le travail à Yquem, et c'est particulièrement passionnant de pouvoir mieux visualiser les différentes interventions sur la vigne dans un domaine dont la philosophie est souvent citée en exemple. D'autre part, le film montre bien l'importance de l'homme et la façon dont il va intervenir pour comprendre et aider la nature.
