I started the day off in the most perfect way, watching the sun rise from the rooftop of my Riad in Fez. I then made my way to Chefchaouen, a.k.a The Blue City bus (which broke down on the way there) I ate some lovely Moroccan tajine when I got there that night. The next day I explored the beautiful blue medina, visited the Spanish Mosque twice, one witnessing a lovely sunset (must see).

MOROCCO'S BLUE CITY :: CHEFCHAOUEN :: ADD THIS CITY TO YOUR BUCKET LIST
One of my favorite days in Morocco -- from waking up and finding the best crepes to roaming the blue city with no set plans, we had the most fun exploring this magical blue pearl. Still don't understand the spelling of this beautiful blue city -- the map in #Morocco said Chechaouen but everyone online said Chefchaouen so for the sake of SEO the title is sticking.

Chefchaouen: Inside Morocco's Blue City
Morocco's 'Blue City'. Chefchaouen is best-known for its colorful buildings, a centuries-old tradition kept alive today. CCTV's Clementine Logan met some of its residents to find out more.

Today we are exploring Chefchaouen, internationally known as the blue city of Morocco. The name means horns of a goat which is in reference to the two peaks which are behind the city.
A walk through the mountain city of Chefchaouen is perhaps the most scenic stroll one could have in Morocco. Narrow streets and alleys lead you through a colorful city with a 500-year-old fort at its center.
There are several theories as to why the city is painted blue, but the consensus is that Jews escaping the Spanish inquisition in the late 1400s arrived and started the tradition. It’s definitely a place where you’ll need to wear comfortable walking shoes.
I asked around for a good place to eat and many people suggested Casa Hassan. The restaurant is located one block away from the Kasbah. The food here is delicious! It's about 80 dinar for a three course meal.
If you’re in Tangier or Fes, Chefchaouen is a great day trip option, but I suggest spending the night so you don’t feel rushed. Don’t forget your camera for this place! There is a photo opportunity around every corner.
There you have the blue city of Chefchaouen, Morocco! Have any other tips about the city? Leave a comment below!

hefchaouen or Chaouen (Arabic: شفشاون/الشاون, Shafshāwan (pronounced IPA: ʃəfˈʃɑˑwən);Berber: ⴰⵛⵛⴰⵡⵏ, Ashawen; Portuguese: Xexuão; Spanish: Xauen, lit. horns) is a city in northwest Morocco. It is the chief town of the province of the same name, and is noted for its buildings in shades of blue.
Chefchaouen is situated in the Rif Mountains, just inland from Tangier and Tetouan. The city was founded in 1471,[1] as a small fortress which still exists to this day, by Moulay Ali Ben Moussa Ben Rached El Alami (a descendant of Ibn Machich and Idris I, and through them, of the Islamic prophet Muhammad) to fight the Portuguese invasions of northern Morocco.[2] Along with the Ghomara tribes of the region, many Moriscos and Jews settled here after the Spanish Reconquista in medieval times.[3] In 1920, the Spanish seized Chefchaouen to form part of Spanish Morocco. Spanish troops imprisoned Abd el-Krim in the kasbah from 1916 to 1917, after he talked with the German consul Dr. Walter Zechlin (1879–1962). (After defeating him with the help of the French, Abd el-Krim was deported to Réunion in 1926.) Spain returned the city after the independence of Morocco in 1956.

What is great about Chefchaouen compared to Marrakech? No motorbike noise in the narrow streets :)
Chefchaouen also known as Chaouen, is a city in northwest Morocco. It is the chief town of the province of the same name, and is noted for its buildings in shades of blue. Chefchaouen is situated just inland from Tangier and Tétouan.
The city was founded in 1471 as a small kasbah (fortress) by Moulay Ali ibn Rashid al-Alami, a descendant of Abd as-Salam al-Alami and Idris I, and through them, of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. Al-Alami founded the city to fight the Portuguese invasions of northern Morocco. Along with the Ghomara tribes of the region, many Moriscos and Jews settled here after the Spanish Reconquista in medieval times.[3] In 1920, the Spanish seized Chefchaouen to form part of Spanish Morocco. Spanish troops imprisoned Abd el-Krim in the kasbah from 1916 to 1917, after he talked with the German consul Dr. Walter Zechlin (1879–1962). The beauty of Chefchaouen's mountainous surroundings are enhanced by the contrast of the brightly painted medina (old town). It is this beauty and the relaxed atmosphere of the town that makes Chefchaouen very attractive to visitors.
The main square in the medina is lined with cafes and filled to the brim with locals and tourist mingling easily. Another reason why backpackers love Chefchaouen is the easy availability of drugs. During the summer approximately 200 hotels cater to the influx of European tourists.
