The Cheruthoni Dam, located in Idukki District, Kerala, India, is a 138m tall concrete gravity dam. This dam was constructed as part of the Idukki Hydroelectric Project along with two other dams at Idukki and Kulamavu. The project was completed with Canadian aid. The Government of Canada aided the Project with long term loans and grants. S.N.C.Inc., Canada, a firm of Consulting Engineers were advising and assisting Project Engineers under the Canadian Aid.[1][2]
The water impounded by these three dams of Idukki, Cheruthoni & Kulamavu has formed a single reservoir spread over 60 sq.km on a height of 2300 ft above Mean Sea Level.[3] The Idukki Dam is a double curvature arch dam constructed across Periyar River in a narrow gorge between two granite hills and is the tallest double curvature arch dam in Asia.Cheruthoni Dam is located 1 km west of Idukki dam. The spill way of the Idukki Reservoir is in the Cheruthoni dam. Kulamavu Dam was constructed to prevent the water escape through a rivulet called Kilivally, 30 km west to Idukki Arch Dam. It is a 100 metres tall Masonry gravity dam. Construction of this Cheruthoni Dam, Idukki Arch Dam and Kulamavu Dam created an artificial lake of 60 km2 and the water stored, is used for production of electricity at the Moolamattom Power house. The power house at Moolamattom is the biggest underground power station in India and the pressure shaft is the largest in the country. Cheruthoni is the largest and highest gravity dam in Kerala.[4] Storage of water in Idukki Reservoir started in February, 1973. Moolamattom Power Station was Commissioned in February 1976 by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

The stored water is used to produce electricity at the Moolamattom Power house, which is located inside nearby rocky caves. The Government of Canada aided in the building of the dam with long term loans and grants.
The idea of constructing a dam for power generation was first conceived in 1919 in a report submitted by Italian engineer Jacob to the Travancore government, which was rejected. As per history, Shri Chemban Karuvellayan Kolumban,[4] the head of 'Oorali' race during 1922, showed the way to the Malankara Estate Superintendent W.J.John and his friend AC Thomas Edattu, who were on hunting trip to forests near the present Arch Dam. Upon hearing the legend of Kuravan and Kurathi Hills, Thomas impressed by the sight of water flow between the mountains; suggested the spot suitable for an Arch dam. In 1932, W.J.John submitted a report to the Government of Travancore on the possibility of constructing a dam at Idukki for Power Generation.[5]
In 1935, assembly member Shri.K.A.Narayana Pillai brought the Idukki project to the attention of Government of Travancore. Italian engineers Angelo Omedayo and Clantheyo Masele conducted a study in 1937 but things didn't go forward.
In 1947, a preliminary investigation report was prepared and submitted by Sri. P. Joseph John, the then Chief Electrical Engineer to the Government of Travancore. It was during 1956 that the Central Water Commission conducted a detailed investigation based on the Government's request. The project report was prepared in 1961 and the Planning Commission accorded sanction for implementing the scheme in 1963. In 1964, under the leadership of Sri. E.U.Philipose, Superintending Engineer, preliminary works of the project were started.
dukki Dam is 168.91 m (554.2 ft) tall, constructed between the two mountains - Kuravanmala (839 m (2,753 ft)) and Kuravathimala (925 m (3,035 ft)). Length of the dam on its top is 365.85 m (1,200.3 ft). It has a width of 7.62 m (25.0 ft) in the top and 19.81 m (65.0 ft) in the bottom. About 464,000 m3 (16,400,000 cu ft) of concrete was used in the construction of the dam. This project is situated in Idukki District and its underground power house is located at Moolamattom which is about 43 km (27 mi) from the dam. One thing to be noted is, Idukki Arch dam doesn't have any shutters to be opened so it has to rely on the Cheruthoni dam to maintain the reservoir water level.

Twice in the past, the shutters (of Cheruthoni) had to be opened; during the northeast monsoon (October to December) on both occasions. The first time was in 1981 (when the shutters were repeatedly opened and shut between 29 October and 13 November) and the second time was in 1992 (when they were kept open for 12 days from 12 to 23 October). On both occasions, the water level in the dam touched the brim only when the storage built up during the southwest monsoon (June to September) was augmented by the inflow received immediately afterwards following heavy downpour early in the northeast monsoon.

KULAMAVU DAM
Kulamavu Dam (Malayalam: കുളമാവ് അണകെട്ട്) is a gravity/masonry dam on the Periyar river. It is one of the three dams associated with the Idukki hydro electric power project in the Indian state of Kerala.[1] The dam is situated on the Thodupuzha - Puliyanmala state highway (SH-33), about 23 km (14 mi) from Idukki arch dam, 22 km (14 mi) from Cheruthoni dam and 38 km (24 mi) from Thodupuzha.
The dams of Idukki, Cheruthoni and Kulamavu extend to an area of 33km². The construction of these three dams formed a 60km² artificial lake.
MOOLAMATTOM POWER STATION
Moolamattom Power Station the biggest underground Hydro-electric Project in India.[1] The water from the Idukki Dam is carried by the underground pipes to the power station. The installed capacity of the Power House is 780MW consisting of 6 generator units of 130 MW each.The regulated waters of Periyar falls through a drop of about 669.2 metres (2195 feet) while generating power in the underground power house. The tail waters makes Thodupuzha river at Thriveni sangamam which is 1 km. from Moolamattom Power Station. Project work on this power station was initiated by Sri. E.U.Philipose, Superintending Engineer, Kerala State Electricity Board in 1964. Visitors are restricted to enter the Moolamattom Power Station due to security reasons.

ഇടുക്കി ജല വൈദ്യുത പദ്ധതിയുടെ ഭാഗമായി നിർമ്മിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന മൂന്ന് അണക്കെട്ടുകളിൽ ഒന്നാണ് ചെറുതോണി അണക്കെട്ട്. ഇടുക്കി അണക്കെട്ട്, കുളമാവ് അണക്കെട്ട് എന്നിവയാണ് മറ്റു രണ്ട് അണക്കെട്ടുകൾ. എല്ലാ അണക്കെട്ടിന്റെയും ഭാഗമായി 60 കിലോമീറ്റർ ചുറ്റളവിലാണ് ജലസംഭരണ പരിധി. ഇതൊരു ഭാരാശ്രിത അണക്കെട്ടാണ്. ഇന്ത്യയിൽ ഉയരത്തിൽ മൂന്നാമതാണ് ഈ അണക്കെട്ടിന്റെ സ്ഥാനം[1]. 1976 - ൽ നിർമ്മാണം പൂർത്തിയാക്കിയ ഈ അണക്കെട്ട് സമുദ്രനിരപ്പിൽ നിന്നും 3900 അടി ഉയരത്തിലാണ് സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത്. ഹിന്ദുസ്ഥാൻ കൺസ്ട്രക്ഷൻ കമ്പനിയാണ് ഈ അണക്കെട്ട് നിർമ്മിച്ചത്. വിനോദസഞ്ചാര ഭാഗമായി ചെറുതോണി അണക്കെട്ടിനും കുളമാവ് അണക്കെട്ടിനും ഇടയിലായി ബോട്ടിങ് സൗകര്യം ഏർപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഓണം, ക്രിസ്മസ് എന്നീ സന്ദർഭങ്ങളീൽ ചെറുതോണി, ഇടുക്കി അണക്കെട്ടുകൾക്കു മുകളിലൂടെ സന്ദർശകർക്കു പ്രവേശനാനുമതി കൊടുക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. ഈ സന്ദർഭത്തിൽ മാത്രമാണ് ബോട്ടിങ്ങ് നടത്താനും കഴിയുന്നത്. അനുവദിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന കാലയളവിലും അല്ലെങ്കിൽ പ്രത്യേക അനുമതിയോടെയും മാത്രമേ അണക്കെട്ടിനു മുകളിൽ പ്രവേശനം ലഭിക്കുകയുള്ളു. ജലസംഭരണിയിലെ (ഇടുക്കി, ചെറുതോണി, കുളമാവ് അണക്കെട്ടുകൾ കൂടിച്ചേർന്ന് രൂപം കൊടുത്തിട്ടുള്ള റിസർവ്വോയറിലെ )ജലവിതാനം ഉയരുമ്പോൾ ചെറുതോണി അണക്കെട്ട് വഴിയാണ് അധികജലം പുറത്തേക്കൊഴുക്കുക.

Idukki is a well known tourist center in Kerala. The Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary extends over the Thodupuzha. Udumbanchola taluks of Idukki district, spread over 77 km2 and is about 450 – 748 m above sea level. Cameras and cell phones are not allowed inside the dam area. The entry fee is Rs.25 for adults and Rs.5 for children. The fee for 15-minute boating service for five persons is Rs. 600. The time for the dam is open to the public holidays and only Sat, Sun 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM.

This was the first instance of water being released from the dam during the southwest monsoon season. [5]
Kulamavu Dam Reservoir
On 10 August 2018, all five shutters of the Cheruthoni dam were raised for the first time in history with the water level in the dam exceeding the 2400 ft mark. The water level kept rising in Asia's biggest arch dam even after opening the first sluice gate which lead to the opening of all five gates within a matter of 26 hours. The spill gates sent down 750 cumecs (7.5 lakh litres per second) of water downstream resulting in widespread flooding along the state's longest river.
இடுக்கி அணை கேரள மாநிலத்தில் பாயும் பெரியாற்றின் குறுக்கே கட்டப்பட்ட அணையாகும். கேரள மாநிலத்தில் இடுக்கி மாவட்டத்தில் அமைந்துள்ள இந்த அணை 839 அடி உயரமுடைய குறவன் மலை, 925 அடி உயரமுள்ள குறத்தி மலை எனும் இரு மலைகளை இணைத்து வளைவு வடிவில் கட்டப்பட்ட அணையாகும். ஆசியாவிலிருக்கும் உயரமான வளைவு அணைகளுள் (arch dam) இது இரண்டாவது மிகப்பெரிய அணையாகும்[1]. இந்த அணையின் கட்டுமானப்பணியானது 1969ஆம் ஆண்டு தொடங்கப்பட்டு 1973ஆம் ஆண்டு பயன்பாட்டுக்கு வந்தது.[2] இதன் உயரம் 167.68 மீட்டர்கள். இந்த அணை 36 ஆயிரம் ஏக்கர் பரப்பளவில் 72 டிஎம்சி தண்ணீரைத் தேக்கி வைக்கும் வசதியுடையது. இந்த அணையில் தேக்கப்படும் நீர் பாசணத்துக்குப் பயன்படுத்தப்படுவதில்லை. மின் உற்பத்திக்கப்பிறகு நீரானது அரபிக்கடலில் கலக்கிறது.hotels,ഇടുക്കി ജില്ലയിൽ, (കേരളം, ഇന്ത്യ) പെരിയാർ നദിക്കു കുറുകെ നിർമിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള അണക്കെട്ടാണ് ഇടുക്കി അണക്കെട്ട്. വൈദ്യുതോല്പാദനമാണ് അണക്കെട്ടിന്റെ ഉദ്ദേശ്യം. ഏഷ്യയിലെ ആദ്യത്തെ കമാന അണക്കെട്ടാണിത്. 1976 ഫെബ്രുവരി 12 ന് അന്നത്തെ ഇന്ത്യൻ പ്രധാനമന്ത്രി ഇന്ദിരാഗാന്ധി ഈ ജലവൈദ്യുത പദ്ധതി ഉദ്ഘാടനം ചെയ്തു. 839 മീറ്റർ ഉയരമുള്ള കുറവൻ മലയെയും, 925 മീറ്റർ ഉയരമുള്ള കുറത്തിമലയെയും കൂട്ടിയിണക്കി 555 അടി[3] ഉയരത്തിൽ പെരിയാറിന് കുറുകെയാണ് അണക്കെട്ട് നിർമ്മിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. 60 ചതുരശ്ര കിലോമീറ്റർ വ്യാപിച്ച് കിടക്കുന്ന ജലസംഭരണിയാണ് ഡാമിനുള്ളത്. പരമാവധി സംഭരണ ശേഷി 74.5 ദശലക്ഷം ഘനയടിയാണെങ്കിലും 70.5 ടി എം സി വരെയാണ് സംഭരിക്കാറുള്ളത്. 780 മെഗാവാട്ട് ഉല്പാദന ശേഷിയുള്ള പദ്ധതിയുടെ ഊർജ്ജോല്പാദനകേന്ദ്രം മൂലമറ്റത്താണ്. നാടുകാണി മലയുടെ മുകളിൽനിന്ന് 750 മീറ്റർ അടിയിലുള്ള ഭൂഗർഭ വൈദ്യുതനിലയം ഇന്ത്യയിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലുതുമാണ്.

Kerala, a state on India's tropical Malabar Coast, has nearly 600km of Arabian Sea shoreline. It's known for its palm-lined beaches and backwaters, a network of canals. Inland are the Western Ghats, mountains whose slopes support tea, coffee and spice plantations as well as wildlife. National parks like Eravikulam and Periyar, plus Wayanad and other sanctuaries, are home to elephants, langur monkeys and tigers.
Idukki district is a densely forested, mountainous region in the south Indian state of Kerala. In the north, Anamudi mountain towers over Eravikulam National Park, where the rare, blue Neelakurinji flower blooms every 12 years. Nearby, Munnar is a hill station known for its sprawling tea plantations and Tea Museum. Farther south is the vast, curved Idukki Dam and Periyar National Park, a tiger and elephant reserve.
The Idukki Dam is a double curvature Arch dam constructed across the Periyar River in a narrow gorge between two granite hills locally known as Kuravan and Kurathi in Kerala, India. At 168.91 metres, it is one of the highest arch dams in Asia. It is constructed and owned by the Kerala State Electricity Board.
The Cheruthoni Dam, located in Idukki District, Kerala, India, is a 138m tall concrete gravity dam. This dam was constructed as part of the Idukki Hydroelectric Project along with two other dams at Idukki and Kulamavu. The project was completed with Canadian aid.
Munnar : Munnar is a town in the Western Ghats mountain range in India’s Kerala state. A hill station and former resort for the British Raj elite, it's surrounded by rolling hills dotted with tea plantations established in the late 19th century. Eravikulam National Park, a habitat for the endangered mountain goat Nilgiri tahr, is home to the Lakkam Waterfalls, hiking trails and 2,695m-tall Anamudi Peak.

The Idukki Dam, located in Kerala, India, is a 168.91 m (554 ft) tall arch dam. The dam stands between the two mountains - Kuravanmala (839)m and Kurathimala (925) m. It was constructed and is owned by the Kerala State Electricity Board. It supports a 780 MW hydroelectric power station in Moolamattom.
It is built on the Periyar River, in the ravine between the Kuravan and Kurathi Hills in Kerala, India. At 167.68 metres, it is one of the highest arch dams in Asia and third tallest arch dam.
