We started the day at 5:30am and drove three hours west to Chichicastenango. Are first stop in Chichicastenango was the arch of Gucumatz. This is the entrance to the city and also in the Maya religion to the under world!
We then walk through the whole city and I tried fresh orange juice, pupusas and home made ice cream. Everything was so good! From their we made are way to the Maya cemetery via the poultry market.
After exploring the maya cemetery we went all out shopping. I bought a ton of wood carved mask, Mariel bought some clothing and I bought a table runner for my wife.
We then visited Santo Tomas Church which is the most iconic spot in the city. It's famous because this church is a unified church between Catholicism and the Maya religion.
Next up we went to lunch at the Maya Inn hotel. He we tried some Culche and some Pepian de Pollo which is a traditional dish in Chichicastenango.
After exploring the whole town we drove back to Guatemala city and on the way we stopped at Iximche. This Maya archeological site is one of the most important because this is where the Spanish took country of the country.
Next time you head to Guatemala I recommend working with my friends at A La Carta Tours:

Chichicastenango, market, church and cemetery, Guatemala
Chichicastenango, also known as Santo Tomás Chichicastenango, is a town in the El Quiché department of Guatemala, known for its traditional K'iche' Maya culture.
Chichicastenango is well known for its famous market days on Thursdays and Sundays where vendors sell handicrafts, food, flowers, pottery, wooden boxes, condiments, medicinal plants, candles, pom and copal (traditional incense), cal (lime stones for preparing tortillas), grindstones, pigs and chickens, machetes, and other tools. In the central part of the market plaza are small eateries (comedores).
Among the items sold are textiles, particularly the women's blouses. The manufacture of masks, used by dancers in traditional dances, such as the Dance of the Conquest, have also made this city well known for woodcarving.
Next to the market is the 400-year-old church of Santo Tomás. It is built atop a Pre-Columbian temple platform, and the steps originally leading to a temple of the pre-Hispanic Maya civilization remain venerated. K'iche' Maya priests still use the church for their rituals, burning incense and candles. In special cases, they burn a chicken for the gods. Each of the 18 stairs that lead up to the church stands for one month of the Maya calendar year. Rather than the expected pews, you'll find makeshift shrines and altars spread out on the floor with pine needles and candles. It was in the church's convent that the oldest known copy of the ancient Popol Vuh text was discovered.
Chichicastenango's cemetery is filled with brightly painted mausoleums and aboveground crypts. While it is very photogenic and atmospheric, there have been reports of attacks on tourists here, so be careful and only visit the cemetery as part of a group or with a tour guide. The cemetery is located along the western end of 8a Calle.

Chichicastenango - colorful market in Guatemala
* Deutsch ** English *** Espanol
* Markttag in Chichicastenango im guatemaltekischen Hochland.
bunten Grabmalen.
** Market day in Chichicastenango within the highland of Guatemala.
Every Thursday and Sunday meet the indigenous groups of Mayan
Quiche, Mam, Ixil and Kaqchikel of Chichis surroundings to sell and
buy their local products in Chichcastenango. It is one of the
biggest and most colorful markets of Latinamerca. Despite
international fame the market keeps still his flair and charm with all
the local products like vegetables, spices, textiles, chicken, dogs,
pigs and as well the traditional colorful clothing and spirit of the
local people. It is a great pleasure to walk through the alleys and
watch and enjoy the merchants. Center of the market and also
religious center is the Santo Tomas church. Another high
recommendation is a short walk to the cemetery with lots of
colorful tombs and monuments.
The Day of the Dead in Chichicastenango, Guatemala
The biggest and most colorful celebration of the Day of the Dead in Guatemala is in Chichicastenango. Ancestors are remembered and honored on this day. The various Brotherhoods parade through the streets with religious icons. The members of one Brotherhood don elaborate costumes and masks and dance on this and other holidays in an imitation of the Conquistadors, which makes for an interesting role reversal and a fascinating spectacle.
