CHINSURAH-We and our hometown | Chuchura | Hooghly | The Dutch Colony III by ESCAPE (Vlog #1)
We are delighted to present a beautiful part of Bengal in our first vlog. CHINSURAH, once the largest colony of Dutch East-India Company in India is actually our hometown which is not so far from Kolkata. Even today the traces of the Dutch culture could be found in many marvelous heritage structures.

Chinsurah, was a Dutch colony from 1615 to 1825, hides as much as it reveals its past. At the end of 17th century, the VOC’s (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie) director of Bengal, Jan Albert Sichterman, commissioned a fort named ‘Gustavus’ in India to strengthen their presence.
Dutch Cemetery (Estd. 1740): Built by Louis Taillefert, then director of the VOC in Bengal, the Dutch citizen who died between 1743 and 1846 buried here. The oldest tomb belongs to Sir Cornelius de Jonge in 1743. Now this cemetery is maintained under ASI (Archaeological Survey of India) as a heritage site. Last recorded burial was held in 1887 that of Emma Draper.
Ghorir More (Clocktower Crossing, Estd. 1914): This 19th century Gothic tower, imported by the British in memory of King Edward VII, is Chinsurah's iconic landmark. This clock was stopped in 2009 once, from then to present day still it is ticking and now this clock is under maintenance of MS Hussain & Co. along with the hel[ of Hooghly-Chinsurah Municipality.
Hooghly Collegiate School (Estd. 1812): Once part of the Governor's pleasure garden facing the river, the school was established in 1812 and now its a government school of boys. It is the oldest govt. school in West Bengal. So many renowned and famous person of India, who had been an alumnus of this institution namely Bankim chandra Chattopadhyay; writer of 'Bandemataram', Sir Ashutosh Mukherjee, Ramesh Chandra Majumdar, Sayed Ameer Ali and many more. We are feeling still proud to be students of this great heritage institution.
Ghanta Ghat: It has its own history in its name. There was a Dutch cathedral with a large sized Bell ('Ghanta') at the bank of the Hooghly river beside this ghat. In 1864, due to a heavy natural calamity, the Cathedral collapsed and from then the name of this ghat became 'Ghonta Ghat'.
In this vlog we could not cover the full history of our town. So, we have a plan to cover other heritages of our town in a series of video episodes in the upcoming year.

Bond's 5 page story was adopted by the film director Vishal Bhardwaj in 2007 and developed into a Bollywood film - '7 Khoon Maaf' (Seven Sins Forgiven), starring Priyanka Chopra as Susanna. On the request of Bhardwaj, Bond wrote a 80 page novella based on the short story and Vishal Bhardwaj made a screenplay out of it, co-written with Matthew Robins from Hollywood. The screenplay along with the novel and the original short story were later published as a full fledged book by Penguin India.
But this post is not a film review. This article is about the principal character of the story - SUSANNA ANNA MARIA YEATS, who surprisingly (or might be intentionally!) resembles a Dutch Lady of the same name of 18th century Chinsurah, a Dutch colony then.
Chinsurah, Hooghly was a Dutch Colony during the period 1635-1824. Dutch East India Company made significant progress in Asian Spice Trade in 17th and 18th Century. A business settlement was established in Chinsurah in 1635 to trade in opium, salt, muslin and spices. Later they built a fort called Fort Gustavious, a church and several other buildings in the town. Trade thrived in Dutch Bengal in early 18th century to such an extent that Chinsurah-Hooghly was allowed to trade directly with the Dutch Republic (instead of first delivering the goods to Batavia, present day Jakarta, Indonesia). Chinsurah flourished under Dutch rule. But eventually the Dutch control over Bengal made the Anglo-French rivalry inevitable. It was an imposing threat to the emerging British powers. The victory of British in the Battle of Plassey, 1757 reduced the status of the Dutch Administration to a mere minor power. Finally, through the Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1824, Dutch surrendered their establishment on Indian subcontinent to the British.
Susanna Anna Maria Verkerk was a Dutch Lady of 18th century Chinsurah. Her first husband was Pieter Brueys, a prominent merchant and a director of Dutch Administration. They had three children. Two daughters - Susanna Jacoba and Maria Anna de Brueys and a son - Louis Adrian de Brueys. After the death of Pieter Brueys in 1783, Susanna Anna Maria Brueys got married again, to Thomas Yeats, a well-established Englishman of Colonial Bengal.
In 1805, four years before her death, she made a will giving all her possessions to her son Louis Adrian. Being married to two such affluent man, she inherited vast properties which include two houses - one beside the river, adjacent to Dutch Factory building and another at Taldanga, present day G T Road with sixty bighas of land attached with it called Ayesh Baag. Through her will she bequeathed Rs.4000 as a trust, the interest of which was to be applied to repair her own tomb and that of her two husbands. She died in 1809 and was buried in Ayesh Baag. Later on, under British rule, the property along with the land was sold in 1833, leaving only her tomb as the solitary structure.

Near Ganta Ghat in Chinsura is a place which the Dutch called 'Welgelegen' ('Well-Situated'). It was a lofty leisure house partly build over the Ganges (see book 'VOC in India' for rare picture). One still can find a VOC memory stone (1678) and VOC-canons which are facing the Ganges.
Also near Ganta Ghat is a temple who are carefully looking after the Dutch presents, givien to the temple around 1800: a silver 5-heade Shiva and 2 copper temple drums.
Finally the Dutch Cemetery is shown, about 1 km from Ganta Ghat, and a nearby neo-classical monumental tomb of a Dutch Lady .....

Chinsurah - Susanna’s Tomb and Ghorir More || চুঁচুড়া - সুসান্না আন্না মারিয়ার সমাধি এবং ঘড়ির মোড়
Chinsurah or Chuchura (চুঁচুড়া) is a municipality in Hooghly district of Bengal. Prior to India's independence, Chinsurah was a very important town for the Dutch, the Portuguese and the British alike. Several buildings provide architectural proof for the same. In these video, we explore a Dutch influenced tomb and a British cast iron marvel. Surmounted by a dome with a steeple, Susanna Anna Maria’s Tomb is an exact replica of Tammerus Canter Visscher’s Tomb in Cossimbazar, and is a hybrid of Neoclassical and Baroque styles. Susanna’s life had inspired the notable writer, Ruskin Bond, to pen a short story titled ‘Susanna’s Seven Husbands’. The short story was the inspiration behind Priyanka Chopra starred bollywood movie, ‘Saat Khoon Maaf’. The movie was released in 2011 and was directed by Vishal Bharadwaj. At the Ghorir More, the cast iron gothic tower was built by the British in 1914, in honour of King Edward VI. It was built at an intersection of four important streets and is still one of the busiest junctions of Chinsurah. ‘Ghori’ means clock in Bengali and hence the intersection is known as ‘Ghorir’ More. The clocks are still in working condition.

Karnani Mansion, Queen's Mansion, Calcutta
A short cut with a long history. Two magnificent buildings that stretch across and cast long ghostly shadows into the walls of history. Karnani Mansions and Queen's Mansion. Housed within are powdered beauties, belly scratching pimps, bum touching offices, a quaint school, empty hair cutting saloons, backdoors of listless watering holes, forgotten apartments, creaking elevators from a bygone era and a general feeling of diaspora. It's a quick walk, a forgotten shortcut and a quaint journey back into the sands of time. Creative Inputs - Diptanshu Roy, Srimoyee Basu, Saurav Ghosh.
