Camelback Cholla Trail - A Hikers Guide to Camelback Mountain
Camelback’s Cholla Trail is one of the most popular trails in Phoenix, Arizona. Thousands of people, from all over the world, make the journey to the top for a thrill and stunning views of the Valley of the Sun.
There are two main trails for hiking to the summit. The Cholla, which is what you see in this video, and Echo Canyon. With both trails offering a unique experience, there are several ways you can enjoy them. Some people prefer to hike up one trail and come down the other side, then ride share back to their car.
The Cholla trail is on the east side of Camelback, and Echo Canyon is located on the western side. Echo Canyon is slightly more challenging in my opinion because of a portion with cables, and the incline seems a bit more steep and aggressive.
If this is your first time considering hiking Camelback, then I highly recommend starting with the Cholla. Take your time walking to the trailhead, you may have to park a mile or so from the trailhead, as I did in the video. A slow and steady pace in the first 2/3rd’s is recommended. I have learned the hard way that taking on a brisk pace will make the hike harder.
Once you get to the saddle, there is a nice resting area with great views. If this is as far as you want to go, sit and appreciate the view for a bit. For those wishing to do the final 1/3 of the trail, you’ll notice a drastic change from the first 2/3rd’s. This part of the trail will require some boulder climbing and areas of decently exposed trails. I wouldn’t recommend for those with fear of heights.
Finally, I recommend that you bring 2-4 liters of water per person, and avoid hiking during the warmer times of the year. Be sure to plan your hike so that you are back at your car before sunset to avoid getting a parking ticket. Speaking of parking, this can be an issue for the Cholla trail due to having to parallel park on Invergordon Rd. This may not seem like a big deal, but this particular street has several “no parking” areas so please observe posted signs and painted curbs. Avoid weekends if possible, as finding a parking space can be tricky and time-consuming, and the trails will be very busy.

Places to see in ( Phoenix - USA )
Phoenix is the capital of the southwestern U.S. state of Arizona. Known for its year-round sun and warm temperatures, it anchors a sprawling, multicity metropolitan area known as the Valley of the Sun. It's known for high-end spa resorts, Jack Nicklaus–designed golf courses and vibrant nightclubs. Other highlights include the Desert Botanical Garden, displaying cacti and numerous native plants.
Phoenix is the capital of the state of Arizona as well as the most populous city in the American Southwest and sixth largest city in the United States. Founded in 1871, it has become the region's primary political, cultural, economic, and transportation center. At an elevation of 1100 ft (335 m), it is situated in the biologically unique Sonoran Desert. Over time it has merged with the neighboring cities of Scottsdale, Tempe, Glendale, Peoria, Mesa, Chandler, and Gilbert to form the Greater Phoenix Metropolitan Area. Currently exurbs such as Apache Junction, Fountain Hills, Queen Creek, and Sun City are becoming part of this metropolitan area as well. Phoenix is extremely hot in the summertime, so always have sun screen with you.
Districts of Phoenix :
Downtown
This area spans approximately two to three square miles, with main arteries running along Central Avenue and Washington/Jefferson Streets respectively. Three out of the five tallest skyscrapers in Arizona are in Downtown Phoenix.
Midtown
There are a handful of officially recognized and protected historic neighborhoods and a variety of cultural, performance, and sporting venues in this area of town.
West Phoenix
Includes Maryvale and Estrella, this area has seen its better days and is suffering urban decline. However, a highlight in the area includes the Cricket Pavilion which is a great place to see a concert.
North Phoenix
Includes Deer Valley, Desert View, North Mountain, North Gateway, Norterra/Happy Valley, and New Village. The Phoenix Mountains are located here and offer a plethora of hiking and outdoor activities.
Camelback East
A very upscale area of town which contains the famous Biltmore Hotel, Papago Park, the Phoenix Zoo, and world class resorts. The surrounding area is also known to feature expensive office space, upscale stores, and luxury homes.
South Phoenix
This area is home to South Mountain Regional Park, the largest municipal park in the country. However, the neighborhood at it's base is fairly run-down and many sections are not safe. Laveen is a semi-rural area that is nonetheless seeing increasing development.
Ahwatukee
An upscale neighborhood of Phoenix, Arizona bordered on the north by South Mountain Regional Park, on the east by I-10 and the cities of Chandler and Tempe.

Camelback Mountain (O'odham: Cew S-wegiom) is a mountain in Phoenix, Arizona, United States. The English name is derived from its shape, which resembles the hump and head of a kneeling camel.[3] The mountain, a prominent landmark of the Phoenix metropolitan area, is located in the Camelback Mountain Echo Canyon Recreation Area between the Arcadia neighborhood of Phoenix and the town of Paradise Valley. It is a popular recreation destination for hiking and rock climbing.
History
A cave discovered on the north side of Camelback Mountain indicates that it was used as a sacred site by the prehistoric Hohokam Culture before they abandoned the area in the 14th century.[4]
In January 1879, United States President Rutherford B. Hayes included Camelback Mountain as part of a one million acre (4,000 km²) reservation for the Salt River Pima and Maricopa American Indian tribes.[5] Six months later, at the behest of Charles Poston, the Arizona Territorial Legislature reversed the decision in order to ensure the primacy of the 5000 non-Indian area residents as well as their continued access to Salt River water.[6]
Efforts to protect Camelback Mountain as a natural preserve began in the early 1910s. However, by the 1960s, nearly all of the area had been sold to private interests. Federal and state authorities attempted to stop development above the one thousand and six hundred feet level. They failed to halt development and in 1963 efforts to arrange a land exchange failed in the Arizona State legislature. In 1965, United States Senator Barry Goldwater took up the cause and helped to secure the higher elevations against development. The area became a Phoenix city park in 1968.[7]
The peak lends its name to a major east-west street in the Phoenix area called Camelback Road that starts in Scottsdale and goes about 34 miles (55 km) west past the West Valley suburbs of Goodyear and Litchfield Park. It starts again past the White Tanks.
Camelback Mountain is designated as a Phoenix Point of Pride.[8]
Geology
The mountain is composed of a geologic unconformity between two separate rock formations. The higher part of the peak is Precambrian granite (ca. 1.5 billion years old). The head of the camel is predominantly red sedimentary sandstone from the Chattian stage of the Oligocene epoch(ca. 25 million years old).[9]
Recreation
Two hiking trails ascend 1,280 feet (390 m) to the peak of Camelback Mountain. The Echo Canyon Trail is 1.14 miles (1900 m) and the Cholla Trail is 1.4 mi (2300 m). Both trails are considered strenuous with steep grades. The hiking path has dirt, gravel, boulders, and some handrail-assisted sections. The average hike requires a round trip time of 1.5 to 3 hours.[10]
The Praying Monk is a red sandstone rock formation which is used for rock climbing. Located on the northern slope, the formation resembles the silhouette of a man kneeling in prayer.[11] It rises approximately 100 feet (30 m) and the eastern face has several permanent anchor bolts for attaching a belay rope.[

A walk within the Mysteries of the COPENHAVER CASTLE - Phoenix Arizona - Camelback Mountain
Filmed with written permission from the property owner January 2017. Further information regarding this architectural wonder can be found by searching for Copenhaver Castle; constructed for Dr. Mort Copenhaver in 1967 on the south side of Camelback Mountain. The build out of this residence took over 10 years to complete. Camelback Castle as it is known today is one of Arizona's more infamous historical landmarks. *Note there is a pretty cool Bob Vila this Old House segment that was filmed at the property in 1986.

**I really appreciate unique architecture, Arizona desert scapes, illumination and snapping photos & video as a hobbyist...with that said, please understand I'm not a pro photographer or video editor so the vid & edits are a bit clunky here and there...hope you can look past these foibles and enjoy the castle...Winter is Coming!

???? HIKING TRAILS IN CAVE CREEK, ARIZONA - JEWEL OF THE CREEK - WELCOME TO ARIZONA
Jewel of the Creek - A great hike in Cave Creek, Arizona
Located near Scottsdale, Carefree and Phoenix, the Jewel of the Creek preserve in Cave Creek, Arizona is a beautiful hike that you can adjust to the level of difficulty you are comfortable with.
If you are on Cave Creek Rd., you will have to go North on Spur Cross Rd. and drive until it ends. When you walk pass the parking lot, there is a station where you will have to pay $3 fee per person (I believe it's free for children). There, you should get a map with all the trails and choose the one you will be the most comfortable with. There are many different paths and you can choose the length of time and level of difficulty.
Make sure to wear comfortable tennis or hiking shoes. Bring enough water - it is very easy to get dehydrated in Arizona as we have very dry climate. Keep the map handy and do not wonder into the desert - be wary of snakes, scorpions, jumping chollas and everything in between.
I hope you enjoy your visit!
Oh! If you are hungry, make sure to visit the Village Coffee & Crape Caffe - the breakfast is AMAZING!

Papago Park - Best Hiking Trails For Kids Phoenix, AZ
Just minutes from downtown, Papago Park offers exceptional hiking and a wide array of recreational facilities. Comprised primarily of sandstone, the range is known for its massive buttes that rise and fall throughout the park. The trails that interlace the area are generally easy treks. The smooth footing and low elevation gain make it a popular place for running and mountain biking. Papago Park is home two of the regions most visited attractions, the world-class Phoenix Zoo and the stunning Desert Botanical Garden. Additionally, the park boasts an archery range, orienteering course, Papago Ponds fishing lagoon, the Hall of Flame Museum, Papago Park Baseball/Softball Complex, and the Papago Golf Course, home of the Arizona State Sun Devils' golf team.

Chantell and I LOVE to go hiking, and the mountains are such a beautiful place to exercise and soak in its majestic scenery.
The Phoenix Mountains Preserve is a group of parks located among the Phoenix Mountains in Phoenix, Arizona, United States. The Phoenix Mountains Park and Recreation Area, the first of these parks to be preserved, has been designated as a Phoenix Point of Pride.
The parks and peaks that make up the Preserve are surrounded by civilization, but feel as remote as the Sonoran Desert outside the city. Located in the heart of Central Phoenix and just 20 minutes from downtown, the preserve offers hiking, biking, and views from prominent summits such as Piestewa Peak and Camelback Mountain.
There are a ton of mountains to hike in Arizona, and Phoenix has so many places for such recreational activities.
