Portage Pass Trail Chugach National Forest Alaska 4K UHD
We hiked up to the top of the Portage Pass Trail just after the tunnel to Whittier Alaska. It takes about 50 minutes to climb to the top. Most of the trail is straight up to the top where you have some awesome views of Portage Lake and Glacier. You can also hike to Portage lake with this trail. You can also see the Whittier Passage Canal from the top. This is an intermediate level hike to the top only because of the climb. Otherwise the trail is pretty easy. The toll charge was $13 for the tunnel. There is no charge on the way back.

The Chugach National Forest is a 6,908,540-acre (27,958 km2)[2] United States National Forest in south central Alaska. Covering portions of Prince William Sound, the Kenai Peninsula and the Copper River Delta, it was formed in 1907 from part of a larger forest reserve. The Chugach includes extensive shorelines, glaciers, forests and rivers, much of which is untouched by roads or trails. It hosts numerous bird, mammal and marine species, including extensive shorebird habitat and a bald eagle population larger than the continental 48 states combined. Human industry in the forest includes extensive tourism and some mining and oil and gas operations. For more info, visit this link:

“The Tongass National Forest /ˈtɒŋɡəs/ in Southeast Alaska is the largest national forestin the United States at 17 million acres (69,000 km2). Most of its area is part of the temperate rain forest WWF ecoregion, itself part of the larger Pacific temperate rain forestWWF ecoregion, and is remote enough to be home to many species of endangered and rare flora and fauna. The Tongass, which is managed by the United States Forest Service, encompasses islands of the Alexander Archipelago, fjords and glaciers, and peaks of the Coast Mountains. An international borderwith Canada (British Columbia) runs along the crest of the Boundary Ranges of the Coast Mountains.[2] The forest is administered from Forest Service offices in Ketchikan. There are local ranger district offices located in Craig, Hoonah, Juneau, Ketchikan, Petersburg, Sitka, Thorne Bay, Wrangell, and Yakutat.”

Tongass National Forest| Northernmost Rainforest in the World | Love Nature
We filmed this amazing footage in the Tongass National Forest, the largest protected rainforest in the United States and the northernmost rainforest in the world. The forest includes most of Alaska’s panhandle near the top of the earth.
In this short nature documentary, we explore how it’s possible that a rainforest exists this close to the top of the Earth. In a place once covered in ice, not much soil was left behind after the glaciers receded. But trees with a rare ability to pump nitrogen into the ground supply life to the rainforest. Drenched in fog, mist, and rain, precipitation hangs heavy in the air. Alaska’s biodiversity of plant life is living testament to the health of the air, water, and soil in Tongass National Forest.
We float magically through the understory as state-of-the-art dactylcam flies us past rainforest ferns in this gorgeous aerial photography. We take a scenic tour through the ancient old growth forest of the Tongass, where 200-foot trees live over 800 years. See the assortment of life that’s sustained when these mighty trees finally fall to the forest floor. They continue to enrich the rainforest and prompt the cycle of growth to begin again, including species as varied as coastal brown bears, bald eagles, and salmon

Only a third as large as Tongass National Forest, its twin in the Southeast Alaska, Chugach is still the second-largest national forest in the country and an impressive area of forests, rivers, lakes, mountains and glaciers.By the 17th century, the Dena’ina mountain people had spread across most of Cook Inlet. Captain James Cook was the first European known to write about contact with the Dena’ina community. Cook sailed up Cook Inlet in 1778 hoping to find the Northwest Passage, but had to “turn again,” leading him to name the water body River Turnagain. With the discovery of gold on the Kenai Peninsula in the late 1890s, prospectors, miners and homesteaders headed to Turnagain Arm seeking their fortunes. By 1908, most of the gold-bearing streams were mined out. With the infrastructure of the Iditarod Trail and the Alaskan Railroad, the area continued to be developed, and by the 1960s, commercial logging became prevalent. In response to public pressure, in 1970 the legislature restricted the state-owned land and water described in Alaska Statutes to use as Chugach State Park.Roughly the size of New Hampshire, Chugach features a geographic diversity that is truly unique among national forests. The 5,940,000-acre forest is spread across three distinct landscapes, stretching from the Kenai Peninsula east across Prince William Sound to encompass the Gulf Coast surrounding the Copper River Delta, then east from there as far as Bering Glacier. Chugach is one of the few places left in the world where glaciers spill out of the mountains and into the seas. When combined with the Bagley Icefield from which it originates, Bering Glacier is larger than Switzerland. Columbia Glacier is one of the largest tidewater glaciers in the world while Portage Glacier and its Begich-Boggs Visitor Center is one of the most popular stop for tourists in Alaska.

20150728: Day 51, The Seward, AK Highway
The 28th of July, 2015 was our 51st day of travel. This video is a travelogue highlighting the features of the Seward Highway, which includes the route designations of AK-1 and AK-9, from Anchorage, AK to Seward AK. Life Magazine in 2012 designated the Seward Highway as one of its most scenic drives in the world!
The highway to Seward from Anchorage, AK can have several designations...as do many of Alaska's roads which seem to have at least three! In this case, the route includes the road designation of AK-9 between the Sterling Highway and Seward, a distance of about 37 miles. AK-9 designation terminates near Tern Lake Junction where it intersects with Alaska Route 1 (AK-1).
The Seward Highway, AK-1, begins in Anchorage intersecting with 5th Avenue. The highway proceeds along the coast of the Gulf of Alaska for about 12 miles, with the Kenai Mountains running along the northern side, eventually entering the Chugach State Park. The road continues through several small villages...Indian, Bird, and finally the Community of Girdwood.
Fifty or so miles south of Anchorage along the Seward Highway is the turnoff intersection to the Portage Glacier Road which leads to the community of Whittier after passing through the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel (the Whittier Tunnel).
After passing through Summit Lake you'll soon reach Tern Lake Junction where Alaska Route 1 (AK-1) becomes Alaska Route 9 (AK-9), where this designation remains until reaching the highway terminus in Seward, AK, about 300 feet from the Gulf of Alaska.
You'll drive through Moose Pass, by the Kenai Lake, while enjoying the Chugach National Forest once again as you finally reach the unincorporated community of Bear Creek, then pass the Seward Airport, and finally reach the community of Seward, AK.
The road video was captured using a Cobra Dash Cam.
You can view a detailed video of the travel from Anchorage to Portage Glacier Road in our Whittier video also posted on YouTube:
