Chunchi Falls | Kanakapura, Bangalore, Karnataka
Chunchi Falls is on the river Arkavathi and located in Kanakapura district, Karnataka. This place is around 90 KM from Bangalore and very near to Sangama & Mekedatu, so you can visit both the places one after another. My suggestion is to visit Chunchi falls while returning from Sangama and Mekedatu. LInks for Sangama & Mekedatu is given below.
To visit this place from Bengaluru, first go to Kanakapura, you will see a Sangama/Mekedatu sign board take a left turn from here and follow the main road. My recommendation is to go there during monsoon and avoid summer because less water in the Falls may disappoint you.

From this point, about 3.5 kilometers downstream, the river Kaveri flows through a deep and narrow gorge. Mekedatu' means 'goat's leap' in Kannada.

Chunchi Falls (Kanakapura) trailer // 2017
Chunchi falls, located at a distance of approximately 100 km from Bangalore, is a waterfall on the banks of the River Arkavati and is named after a tribal couple Chuncha and Chunchi. It is en route to Mekedatu and Sangama. Tucked in the middle of rocky terrain and deciduous forest the waterfall is quite popular for picnicking.
Though the falls have yet not been commercialized like Shivnasamudra falls and remains deserted on most of the days but it makes for an ideal day trip from Bangalore to escape from the daily grind.
– CHUNCHI FALLS –
A narrow rocky and muddy path will lead you to one of the most spectacular waterfalls of Karnataka. The terrain is quite uneven and a bit slippery at some places. A short 10 minutes walk on dirt, sand, mud, gravel and rocky terrain will lead you to the vantage point to see the fall in all it’s glory.
At a distance of 83 Kms from Bangalore (near Harro Shivanahalli after Kanakapura - diversion at Kanakapura via Dodda Alahalli) & 101 Kms from Mysore, Chunchi Falls on the River Arkavathi is one of the famous weekend getaways around Bangalore and also among the most visited Bangalore tourist places.
Water drops from a height of about 100 feet through multiple tiers into a small pool creating a swimming pool with running water. It is an ideal place to swim, play & relax in water amidst naturally formed rock formations. This place is usually crowded on weekends. A little walk is required from the nearest road point to reach the falls.
The place is little dangerous due to the slippery rocks and deep gorge on the way to the falls. It is advised to be careful in the surrounding of the falls, and be careful with kids.
After Kanakpura, take a deviation towards Sangama and drive for about 21.5 kms and take another deviation after Dodda Alahalli and drive 6.5 kms via Harro Shivanahalli to reach Chunchi falls. The route to Chunchi Falls is full of greenery. Limited public transportation facilities from Kanakapura, preferably, take your own transportation.
Post monsoons and winter are the best seasons to visit. Chunchi falls is usually visited along with Sangama & Mekedatu (13.5 kms away) with about 2 hours extra effort.
Good To Know :
Pick a shoe that can cross comfortably from road to trail.
Swimming is prohibited due to strong underwater current and crocodiles.
The river water is not safe for drinking. Better to carry bottled water, we carried our Lifestraw bottle with us.
Pack something to fuel yourselves.
Avoid staying late at evening or night as you might end up calling for unnecessary troubles.
Parking fee – INR 30
Entry : Free
Timings – 8 AM to 5 PM
Best Time To Visit :
August to February
Places to Eat
You won’t find any proper restaurants near the fall. Better to carry food and water.
Few makeshift stalls selling buttermilk, coconut water, bottled water, fruits like watermelon, pineapple and dry snack items like chips can be found on the way to the fall from the parking lot.
You can find good restaurants on Kanakpura road on your way, so fuel yourselves well before heading out to the falls.
How To Reach There
By Plane: The nearest airport is in Mysore.
By Train: Nearest railway station is in Mysore, at a distance of 60 kilometers.
By Bus : There are no direct public buses from Bangalore. You might need to change few buses and then take a tuk-tuk/ auto to reach the falls.
By Car : Commuting in your own car/bike or hiring a car to reach the falls would be a good idea rather than public transportation.

Chunchi Falls, Mekedatu and Sangam in one day | Beautiful yet deadliest place around Bangalore
Chunchi falls, Sangama and Mekedatu is one day trip from Bangalore around 100kms bike ride
Vasu hotel:
My previous visit to Mekedatu, Sangama and Chunchi falls:
Sangama is the place where Arakavathi river merges with River Kaveri. Mekedatu means goat's leap in Kannada. River Kaveri flows into a deep and narrow gorge, so narrow that a goat could leap over it and that is how it got its name. It is said that a goat being chased by a tiger saved its life by jumping over the gorge whereas the tiger did not attempt to take the risk and abandoned the chase. When reaching the gorge the river flows ferociously onto the rocks sculpting them into some amazing shapes. The river Kaveri flows through a deep ravine of just 5-10 meter wide. The water flow is very fierce at this place during monsoons making it very dangerous to swim here. The rocks are also very steep and slippery, and visitors need to be careful while descending the rocks. Several tourists downed here due to water force and slippery rocks.
Distance from Bangalore: 100km

Bathing in Chunchi Falls near Kanakpura
Chunchi fall is a beautiful picnic spot about 95 kms from Bangalore. It is located on river Arkavati before its confluence at Sangama. We went there in May when there was less water because of summer. We got a local guide who scouted us easily through the rocky path to the main point. The journey was really adventurous. The fall was very wild and attractive. I took the risk of bathing in the fall which was quite thrilling. Please watch the complete movie and read more about the story in my blogs.
