Nikia in Nisyros. Volcano panorama.

Nikia is often neglected by tourists who come to Nisyros for a day because it is away from the sea. People usually stay at Mandraki by the sea, before or after their visit to the volcano, but Nikia is much more authentic. The narrow streets between the houses are empty and quiet most of the time, and on the picturesque white-blue square you will find the two cafes of the villages and a church. Since the streets are very small, cars are left on the parking lot at the village entrance. There is also the only taverna of Nikia. The permanent residents are about 60 and probably you wont see many of them while walking inside - the place looks abandoned although most houses are neat and in good condition. From the top of Nikia a panoramic view is revealed towards Stefanos, the crater of the volcano, and towards half of the island. On a hill above the parking place you will notice a small white chapel - this is the church of Agia Triada, dating back from 15 century. The church is open for visitors and reachable via many winding steps.
