Chile - Castro on Chiloé
Castro is the largest town on the island of Chiloé in Chile. Much of the traditional life of fishermen still can be found on Chiloé. Famous are the UNESCO listed wooden churches and its colorful wooden houses on poles.
We visited Castro during our overland trip from the Netherlands to South Africa and from there on to South America.

Castro Isla Grande de Chiloé
Castro es una comuna, ciudad y capital provincial de la Provincia de Chiloé, en la Región de Los Lagos, en el Archipiélago de Chiloé. Integra el Distrito Electoral N.° 58 y pertenece a la Circunscripción Senatorial 17.ª. Su capital es la ciudad homónima, ubicada a 1.214 km de Santiago, que es la tercera ciudad más antigua de Chile con existencia continuada, siendo fundada en febrero de 1567, por el mariscal Martín Ruiz de Gamboa. La superficie comunal es de 473 km² y la población total, según el censo de 2012, era de 43.460 habitantes, de los cuales alrededor del 80 % vivía en la ciudad de Castro.
