Originally this church was built in the Thirteenth Century by Domenican friars, and had a much wider structure, with a large adjacent cloister. Part of the church was demolished during Mussolini's Fascist rein in order to build a female military academy (one of the first ones in Italy). Today, the Church of San Domenico has maintained its wonderful Gothic façade and inside the splendid funeral monument to Cardinal De Braye, made by Arnolfo di Cambio.

Orvieto is a small city perched on a rock cliff in Umbria, Italy. Duomo di Orvieto, dating from 1290, has a mosaic facade and houses a marble Pietà sculpture. The Pozzo di San Patrizio is a 16th-century well shaft with a double spiral staircase. An underground cave network attests to the city’s Etruscan roots. Artifacts from this era, like ceramics and bronze items, are on view at the National Archaeological Museum.
Sitting astride a volcanic plug of rock above fields streaked with vines, and olive and cypress trees, Orvieto is visually stunning from the first. Like the love child of Rome and Florence and nestled midway between the two cities, history hangs over the cobbled lanes, medieval piazzas and churches of this cinematically beautiful city. And few churches in Italy can hold a candle to its wedding cake of a Gothic cathedral, which frequently elicits gasps of wonder at its layers of exquisite detail.
If you are planning to see all the sights in Orvieto it is worth buying the Carta Unico Orvieto which allows you to get in all the sights (including Duomo, the Underground Tour and all the museums). The price is 20 Euros (Reduced price 17 Euros for students and over 65s). It also gives you a free return journey on the funicular and bus. If you are not planning to visit all the museums it is not worth it since the sights don't cost a lot and normally have discount if you have visited other sights.
Duomo The wonderful Duomo of Orvieto is the main 'must-see' sight in this town. Constructed in the 13th and 14th centuries, the black and white striped building in mixed Romanesque and Gothic styles, is one of the world's greatest cathedral. The setting, on the Orvieto hill and visible from miles away in the Umbrian countryside doesn't hurt either. But, impressive as the cathedral is, the piece-de-resistance is inside, the frescoes of Luca Signorelli on the theme of the Last Judgment inside the Capella di San Brizio.

The walled city in general is also lovely to walk around. To see: Piazza del Popolo, Saint Patrick's well, La Cava well (etruscan), Corso Cavour (with its shop and restaurants), the Medieval quarter, Saint Giovenale, Saint Giovanni and Saint Francesco churches, Albornoz rock and the surrounding promenade of the downtown.
A funicular railway runs from the railway station to Piazza Cahen and is an easy and spectacular way of getting into town. The town itself is small and walking the entire length of the town is easy. Frequent public buses run through the town and taxis are also available.
The Orvieto train station is at the base of the hill at Orvieto Scalo and there are several daily trains to Florence, Chiusi, and Rome. The station is small and it is easy to find a taxi or a public bus up to the town. The funicular terminus is just outside the station if you want the spectacular ride up
Orvieto is on the A1 autostrada that runs from Milan to Rome via Florence. After exiting the autostrada, a steep road winds its way up to the town. The approach to the town is one of the most glorious things about visiting Orvieto. The bus station is at Piazza Cahen on the Eastern edge of the town. Public buses, taxis, or a quick walk will get you into the town itself. Frequent buses run to and from Rome (2 hrs), Viterbo, Bolsena, Perugia (1 hr), and Todi (2 hrs). Bus A connects Piazza Cahen to the Piazza del Duomo and Bus B to the Piazza della Repubblica.

Orvieto - Appunti di viaggio ♥
Le origini di Orvieto risalgono alla civiltà etrusca: i primi insediamenti, sono del IX° secolo a.C. e si localizzarono all'interno delle grotte tufacee ricavate nel massiccio su cui sorge attualmente la città.
Dopo essere stata annessa nel III° secolo a.C. ai territori di Roma, Orvieto rimane sotto la sua dominazione fino al declino dell'Impero Romano d'Occidente. Diviene poi libero Comune, e durante le lotte tra Guelfi e Ghibellini, è strenua oppositrice del Barbarossa, rimanendo fedele al Papa. Forte della considerazione dello Stato Pontificio, Orvieto può così prosperare per tutto il Medioevo, raggiungendo l'apice dello sviluppo nel XIII° secolo con la costituzione del Consiglio generale dei 400 e l'elezione del Capitano del Popolo.
E' durante questo periodo che si ebbe un fervido lavoro di costruzione di palazzi ed edifici sacri tra cui spicca il celeberrimo Duomo, risalente al 1263, indubbiamente la testimonianza architettonica più importante della città, con la sua splendida facciata gotica e con la ricchezza delle decorazioni e delle cappelle interne. Nella città antica troviamo poi il Pozzo di San Patrizio, edificato nel 1527 su progetto di Antonio da Sangallo il Giovane, il Palazzo dei Sette del 1300, il Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo (XII° secolo) nel quale si tenevano le riunioni del Consiglio Popolare, le chiese di S. Andrea (XII° secolo), S.Domenico (XIII° secolo), S.Giovenale (XI° secolo), Palazzo Soliano (1262) al cui interno sono ospitati due musei : il Museo dell'Opera del Duomo ed il Museo d'Arte Moderna. Inoltre si ricordano il Teatro Mancinelli (1866), la suggestiva Città Sotterranea e la Necropoli del Crocefisso del Tufo risalenti al periodo etrusco.

Chiesa San Giovenale - Orvieto
La Chiesa di San Giovenale a Orvieto merita una visita per la sua antica origine. Sorge ove un tempo era stata edificata una chiesa paleocristiana, in posizione defilata sulla piattaforma tufacea che sostiene la città. All'esterno spicca il campanile laterale; internamente è tuttora possibile ammirare alcuni affreschi medievali e un altare in marmo bizantino. È netto l'influsso longobardo nei rilievi interni e nell'architettura complessiva.

La Chiesa di Sant'Agostino
Oggi auditorium, si erge su Piazzetta Saturno. Di aspetto trecentesco, essa fu l'antico tempio dei Cavalieri Templari. Con lo scioglimento dei Templari - avvenuto nel 1312 - i beni dell’Ordine furono trasferiti ai Cavalieri Ospitalieri, in Sicilia e in tutto il mondo cristiano. Gli Ospitalieri subentrarono nella gestione della chiesa e dell’annesso ospizio, e dedicarono la Chiesa a San Giovanni Battista, ma dopo due anni Federico III d’Aragona affidò il sacro edificio ai padri Agostiniani. Questi occuparono l’edificio e ne ebbero cura, fino alla soppressione dell’Ordine, avvenuta nel 1869. In particolare, i padri ristrutturarono la Chiesa e la ampliarono, conferendole l’aspetto attuale. Successivamente Sant'Agostino divenne chiesa del Senato: in essa si tenevano i Consigli Generali e le più importanti cerimonie religiose. Nell'Ottocento, chiusa al culto, la Chiesa fu profondamente modificata. Il convento fu abbattuto. I bombardamenti del 1943 distrussero l’abside e una parte della navata, in seguito ricostruite.
Dell’assetto originario resta soltanto il prospetto principale. La facciata è a capanna e sul portale, dentro una nicchia, vi è una gigantesca Madonna col Bambino. Magnifico è il rosone ad archi intrecciati, scavato e cesellato in pietra delle cave di Pietretagliate; da esso partono colonnine convergenti nell’Agnus Dei centrale.

Die etruskische Stadt Velzna ist der Ursprung von Orvieto in Umbrien. Eine besondere Sehenswürdigkeit ist der Brunnen Antonio da Sangallo, der wirklich im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes großartig und einen Besuch wert ist. Nicht nur die traumhaften Hügellandschaften laden zum verweilen ein. So gibt es hier auch einen einzigartigen Skulpturengarten der La Serpara heißt. Orvieto ist ein kleines aber feines Erlebnis für sich. Egal ob als Familienurlaub oder als Kulturelle Reise, es wird Sie auf jeden Fall begeistern. Chiesa di San Giovenale, Orvieto Umbria ITA - Orvietoviva.com
La più antica chiesa attiva ad Orvieto fu costruita nell'anno 1004, sui resti di una chiesa paleocristiana dedicata a San Giovenale, primo vescovo di Narni, raffigurato con un'effigie di pietra posta sopra il portale. A sua volta la chiesa preesistente era stata edificata su un antico tempio etrusco dedicato a Tinia (il Giove degli Etruschi). Essa si trova posizionata all'estremità della rupe, da dove si gode di un panorama unico. La sua costruzione fu incentivata soprattutto per volere delle potenti famiglie nobili della città e certamente ricoprì una notevole importanza nella vita sociale e religiosa dell'epoca. Anche internamente la chiesa - in puro stile romanico - si caratterizza per uno stile semplice con le sue antiche pareti ancora parzialmente affrescate.
