Holy Thursday procession in Guatemala's Antigua
(29 Mar 2018) A Holy Thursday procession took place in the Guatemalan city of Antigua to mark the start of a series of solemn ceremonies in the lead up to Easter.
Holy Thursday is also known as Maundy Thursday.
Hundreds of people gathered to watch the traditional Stations of the Cross procession, which travelled throughout the city after leaving the Church of San Francisco.
A statue of Jesus of Nazareth, carrying a golden cross on his back, was carried through the streets by some 1,500 cucuruchos - young men wearing a purple and white headdress - participating in the ceremony, taking turns in order to prolong the procession.
In another part of the colonial city people decorated colourful rugs on the ground for people to walk on during the Holy Week processions.
Some of the rugs included vegetables and fruits, which are placed as offerings to honour the sacrifices made by Jesus Christ.
Since the majority of Guatemala's population is Roman Catholic, several processions are organised throughout Holy Week including the Good Friday Procession of Mercy and the Procession of the Holy Burial.
During Holy Week ceremonies, the faithful relive Jesus's suffering, crucifixion and death - and then his resurrection on Easter Sunday.

Antigua Guatemala Tour: Churches
A tour of Antigua`s crumbling (and beautiful) churches. Due to the multiple earthquakes that hit Guatemala, the churches are damaged yet they are impressive. Antigua Guatemala has many churches and convents and, the most impressive, the Antigua Cathedral: San Francisco Church (Iglesia y convento de San Francisco El Grande), Iglesia de La Merced (Iglesia y convento de Nuestra Señora de Las Mercedes), Church and Convent of las Capuchinas (Iglesia y Convento de las Capuchinas) etc.

Day started off with a couple mishaps. Entered a church in the center of Antigua, on the only day where visitors were not allowed. Did not notice that until I left the cathedral. Then tried to enter another old church and even though this videos is about the things to do in Antigua Guatemala, this sign showed all the things you cannot do in a church in Antigua Guatemala! No short, no cell, no talking to other people, no this, no that. A bit excessive!
Either way, I entered the ruins of San Francisco on the outskirts of Antigua Guatemala near my hostel and they were stunning. I love history, and I love well kept ancient history with information to explain what has happened rather than just leaving it up to interpretation and the grounds here were beautiful and had a little museum on the premises for you to go in and see artefacts and other things from this era.
There are a lot of things to do in Antigua Guatemala, this being one of them because there are many ruins in the area. Probably 5 to 7 just in the center of Antigua alone. If you are looking for other things to do in Antigua Guatemala, check the video links below as one is the local market on the west end of Antigua and the other link is a video of the short walk to the beautiful viewpoint overlooking all of Antigua Guatemala.

Make sure to subscribe as I will be doing one of the volcano hikes in Antigua, which is another great things to do in Antigua Guatemala, when you are here, then I will be leaving the city of Antigua, and the country of Guatemala and off into El Salvador!

☼ ☀ Walking in Antigua, Guatemala ☀ ☼
Taken December 20, 2015.
If you're interested in what Antigua Guatemala looks like, this is a good video for you, taken on an average day. Enjoy!
I started near La Merced (the big yellow church), went down the Calle del Arco, down to Central Park where we see the fountain and main cathedral, and then we go down to the Tanque La Union, where we see the other yellow church and park lined with palm trees. Finally we end inside my favorite church, San Francisco. I love seeing all the random daily activities going on... street vendors, people selling food, a couple getting married, the same musicians that always play in park on Sundays, families walking around enjoying themselves, etc. It's a good representation of a typical Sunday afternoon in Antigua!

Church Ruins - Antigua, Guatemala
Antigua Guatemala has many churches and convents. Some of there are in pretty good shape, some are partly destroyed others are all ruins. Some of this convents and churches ruins are open to visit everyday. La Catedral is the most important today, but maybe not the most impressive. La Merced and San Francisco El Grande have churches that are in good shape and in use, at the side of them, there is a convent in ruins. Others like San Jeronimo and Santa Clara are in ruins both the church and the convent. Capuchinas has some reconstruction, but it is mostly on ruins. Some like San Augustín are not open to the public or are going thru improvement to permit the visit from the public.
