Pabianice is a town in central Poland with about 65000 inhabitants. Situated in the Łódź Voivodeship, it is the capital of Pabianice County. It lies about 10 kilometers (6 miles) southwest of Łódź and belongs to the metropolitan area of that city. It is the third largest city in the Łódź Voivodeship by population. The area of the city covers 32.9 square kilometers (12.7 sq mi) being the 10th largest in Łódź Voivodeship. According to data from 2009 Pabianice covers 33 sq km (13 sq mi) with following split: agricultural land: 53%, forests: 9%. The city covers 6.70% of Pabianice County. Maximilian Maria Kolbe (Polish: Maksymilian Maria Kolbe [maksɨˌmʲilʲjan ˌmarʲja ˈkɔlbɛ]; 8 January 1894 – 14 August 1941) was a Polish Conventual Franciscan friar who volunteered to die in place of a stranger in the German death camp of Auschwitz, located in German-occupied Poland during World War II. He had been active in promoting the veneration of the Immaculate Virgin Mary, founding and supervising the monastery of Niepokalanów near Warsaw, operating an amateur radio station (SP3RN), and founding or running several other organizations and publications.
Kolbe was canonized on 10 October 1982 by Pope John Paul II, and declared a Martyr of charity. He is the patron saint of amateur radio operators, drug addicts, political prisoners, families, journalists, prisoners, and the pro-life movement. John Paul II declared him The Patron Saint of Our Difficult Century. His feast day is August 14, the day of his death.
Due to Kolbe's efforts to promote consecration and entrustment to Mary, he is known as the Apostle of Consecration to Mary.
