Please join me in a rare opportunity to enter a church under reconstruction in Gyumri, Armenia.
Renovation of the Holy Saviour Church of Gyumri
Through the initiative of His Grace Bishop Mikael Ajapahyan, Primate of the Shirak Diocese, the renovation of the Holy Saviour Church of Gyumri has been launched. The renovation works are sponsored by Mr. Vardan Ghukasyan. The church was greatly damaged during the devastating 1988 Spitak earthquake.

Gyumri's Freedom Square
The central square in Gyumri, Armenia's second-largest city. At one end is the black-stone, 19th century Seven Wounds Church, bells pealing for Palm Sunday; at the other end is All-Saviour's Church, completely destroyed in the 1988 earthquake, and still under reconstruction nearly 25 years later. ARMENIAN CATHOLIC CHURCH, GIUMRI (ARMENIA)
A stroll through Ani Cathedral Մայր Աստվածածին
A very moving prayer service being delivered by Armenians in the Mother Cathedral in the medieval Armenian city of Ani, now found in the Republic of Turkey.
Ani is perhaps the most prominent Armenian city from medieval times. Though its history goes back to the period of antiquity, it reached its zenith only in the tenth century AD, when the Armenian king, Ashot III Bagratuni, proclaimed it his capital. He along with his successors fortified the city and embellished the city with churches, cathedrals, chapels, inns, almshouses and other civil structures. So many ecclesiastical buildings were constructed that Ani soon became known as the city of 1,001 churches. The most renowned church which has survived is that of the Mother Cathedral (Mayr Katoghike), whose foundation was laid by King Smbat II Bagratuni and was completed during the reign of his successor King Gagik I (989-1020) by the architect Trdat.
The city's radiance, however, was cut short when it was sacked by the Seljuk Turks in 1064. The cross was brought down and the cathedral was converted into a mosque. The city lost its luster in the following centuries after countless invasions and interminable warfare.
The city now stands desolate and remains in ruins, very little having survived.

Aghpur (Աղբիւր) - A visit to Kars, Ani, Mush and Van
#Armenia #Turkey #GreaterArmenia #WesternArmenia
In May 2018, I visited four major cities of Greater Armenia: Kars, Ani, Mush & Van, located in the present-day Eastern Anatolia region of Turkey.
These territories hold so many stories.
Why should we only hear about it in songs and read about it in books?
These vast areas of land should be visited, over and over again.
After a 2000 Km journey, here’s a compilation of the sites and people we have seen and met during our four-day trip with Hamshen Tour - Համշեն Տուր.

HOLD - TO RUN THURSDAY
(23 Jun 2016) Catholics living in the small Caucasus nation of Armenia are preparing for the visit of Pope Francis.
Armenia is considered the first nation that adopted Christianity as a state religion in 301.
The Catholic community in Armenia is very small, however, comprising of not more than several thousand worshipers.
Pope John Paul II was the last pope to visit Armenia.
That took place in 2001, the year that marked the 1,700th anniversary of the adoption of Christianity by Armenians.
The current pontiff kicks off his three-day visit on Friday with a meeting with the country's president.
During his trip he will also visit the city of Gyumri, the capital of northwestern Shirak province, where most of the Armenian Catholics live.
While in Gyumri, he will celebrate Mass at Vartanants Square, with as many as 15-thousand faithful. Some of them will travel from the Georgian region of Javakheti, home to many Armenian Catholics.
He will then visit the Armenian Apostolic Cathedral of the Seven Wounds as well as the Holy Martyrs Armenian Catholic Cathedral.
Francis will also pray at Etchmiadzin Cathedral, which is the mother church of the Armenian Apostolic Church.
The Armenian Apostolic Church and the Armenian Catholic Church see this visit as a symbol of unity between Christian communities in the country.
