Ikebukuro Sunshine Aquarium in Tokyo AMAZiNG
Feel free to contact me for any video production work in Tokyo// This aquarium in Japan is magical. Visit Ikebukuro to enjoy this amazing experience. Shot & edited by me, Steven LeFever [ LeFeve Films // Music Dreemin by Foniks [ /// My new eBook MARiANA SKY out now:
SYNOPSiS// A genius bird finds the opportunity to speak with a spiritual man through their thoughts via transcendental meditation at Utak, the northernmost island in the Mariana archipelago, which sets him off on a journey through the island chain, experiencing the multi-faceted tropical cultures, observing human behavior, lending his knowledge of the history, and accumulating philosophy through each flight, all to build spiritual growth in hopes of discovering what he really wants in this puzzling life, as he makes his way to Guam, the southernmost island of the Marianas.
I began this story in 2012 before I moved to Japan, and many times I stopped working on it, convinced that it was too big a story to finish. I told myself that I should focus my energy on filmmaking instead. That is until I learned about the Festival of the Pacific Arts and their next impactful event being hosted on Guam. I applied to the diaspora under literary arts and auditioned with this as my way to represent our island meaningfully. Since being accepted, I pushed myself to work even harder on this. The workshops during the festival and the overall experience of FestPac has helped to strengthen MARiANA SKY even further, giving Love not only to our Mariånas, but to all of our familia in Oceania, making me alter my outlook on Life for the greater good. Now I'm very proud to say that it's out in the World for you to absorb// Si yu'os ma'åse

What is there to do in Ikebukuro? | Ikebukuro Impression Video
Why should you go to Ikebukuro?
First of all, what is Ikebukuro? It's one of the major city centers of Tokyo. It's famous for its anime shops and restaurants. You'll find many shops here, including an Animate, large department stores and the largest Pokémon store of Japan. You'll also find an aquarium in Sunshine City, a big mall full of restaurants, shops, and other attractions. It can be reached by using the famous Yamanote line, but is also very accessible by other forms of transport since Ikebukuro station is huge. The nightlife of Ikebukuro is also very large, with hundreds of small bars and restaurants ready to serve you!
Sites of named locations in the video:
- J World (small amusement park consisting of attractions based of several Shonen Manga)
- Sunshine City ( big mall with tons of shops, restaurants and activities!)
- Animate (big shop for anime merch and cosplays)
- Uniqlo (chain store where you can find stylish clothes for a reasonable prize)
Handy links:
- Mos Burger (Japanese Burger chain with relatively healthy burgers which are delicious!)
- Book-Off (chain store for cheap secondhand books, movies, and CDs)
- Family Mart (biggest conbini, convenience store, chain in Japan) (although if you want to withdraw money, I suggest using a 7-eleven ATM if you have a foreign card, you pay a smaller fee here)
- JR Transport (JR provides many lines that cross Ikebukuro which are extremely accessible. before visiting Japan make sure to get a Japan Railpass, there is a big chance that it's cheaper!)
- Tokyo Metro (a different prover of Lines in Tokyo, often times cheaper than JR but they don't go as far because the lines are limited to Tokyo)
Why did I make this video?
This video was made as part of the AY Project for my EF Education in Japanese, although this version is slightly edited (all Japanese text was translated into English). Me and my classmates went to Ikebukuro and got to experience how much fun it was for ourselves. We wanted to give people who are doing research on what to visit a quick impression of what Ikebukuro is and what you can do here. I hope this video is helpful to you!

At the center of Ikebukuro is the train and subway station, a huge urban gathering shared by the JR East lines, the Seibu Ikebukuro Line and the Tōbu Tōjō Line. It is one of the main commuter hubs in the western Yamanote area of Tokyo. Ikebukuro Station is the second busiest station in Japan, second only to Shinjuku Station.
Around the station are the Seibu and Tōbu department stores. Seibu, written with the characters for West and Musashi (province) 西武, is on the east end of the station and Tōbu, written with the characters for East and Musashi 東武, is on the west end. East of the station, on the site of Sugamo Prison, stands Sunshine 60, which was Tokyo's tallest building at the time of its construction. Adjacent to Sunshine City, on Meiji-Dori is the Toyota Amlux Building which houses the Toyota showroom. Otome Road, a leading shopping area for otaku products aimed at women, is located nearby. Marui and Don Quijote also have department stores in the area. The principal electronics retailer in Ikebukuro is Bic Camera. There is a small pleasure district located in Nishi-Ikebukuro, similar to Shinjuku's Kabukichō.
The old village of Ikebukuro stood to the northwest of the station. Most of the area on which modern Ikebukuro is built was historically known as Sugamo. In the Taishō and Shōwa periods, the relatively low land prices attracted artists and foreign workers, who lent a somewhat cosmopolitan atmosphere to Ikebukuro. Until October 1, 1932 when Toshima ward was established, the area was an independent municipality of Ikebukuro-mura (池袋村).
The kanji for Ikebukuro literally means pond bag. Outside the west exit of Ikebukuro station near an entrance to the Fukutoshin Line is a small plaque explaining three origins of the name Ikebukuro. The first is that in the northeastern part of the village there was a lake shaped like someone holding a bag. The second is that there was once a large number of lakes in the area of various sizes (thus implying a bag full of lakes). The third is that long ago a turtle came out of the lake carrying a bag on its back.
There is a small statue of an owl located near the center of the city called Ikefukurō-zō (いけふくろう像), meaning lake owl statue. It is a play on words from the alternative meaning of fukuro as owl (although owl is pronounced with a long final oh, rather than a short o in the word fukuro for bag). The owl statue has become a famous meeting place along the lines of the statue of Hachikō located outside of Shibuya Station.
Education

Amazing Old 1960 Mitsubishi (mod mid-1980s) Tr. Elevs@Ito Building, Ikebukuro, Toshima, Tokyo, Japan
Filmed in January 2016. This is an amazing find - two Mitsubishi elevators from the mid-1980s (built around 1984-86), but according to the information, the building is even older (and it did look pretty old in my opinion), from 1960 (according to some sources, this is from 1972, but I choose to believe the first statement, since 1960 makes more sense since the elevators were completely modernized in the mid-1980s. Very interesting, although the original 1960 Mitsubishi Elevators (Elepet) would have been very rare and amazing to film!
