Citico Creek Camping Trip Day 1- Drive Up, Camp Set Up, and Fishing
Day 1 of our Citico Creek Camping Trip. Kacie, Lexie, and I head up to Citico Creek for some camping and trout fishing. Citico Creek(Citico Creek WIlderness Area) is located in the Cherokee National Forest in Vonore, Tennessee. I have been coming here to camp and fish since I was a kid. Normally always a good time during the stocking season. There are special rules on this stream. Above the permit line, you have to pay a $6 daily fishing fee. You also can not fish on Thursdays(stocking day) or Friday, unless it is a national holiday. Legal Fishing Hours are restricted to 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset. It is legal to fish below the permit line whenever. Normally the only day that falls on is Good Friday. It is a great place to spend some time.
The Buffalo and Silver Redhorse Run on Citico Creek
Citico Creek is located on the Cherokee National Forest and is perhaps one of the nicest medium-sized streams in the southern Appalachians!
Citico Creek & Tanasi
The Monument reads:
The site of the former town of Tanasi, now underwater, is located about 300 yards west of this marker. Tanasi attained political prominence in 1721 when its civil chief was elected the first 'Emperor of the Cherokee Nation'. About the same time, the town name was also applied to the river on which it was located. During the mid-18th century Tanasi became overshadowed and eventually absorbed by the adjacent town of Chota which was to the immediate north. The first recorded spelling of Tennessee as it is today occurred on LT. Henry Timberlake's map of 1762. In 1796, the name Tennessee was selected from among several as most appropriate for the nation's 16th state. Therefore, symbolized by this monument, those who reside in this beautiful state are forever linked to the Cherokee heritage.

Partnering to Connect Citico Creek
“The way we accomplish most of this dam removal work is by developing partnerships,” says Ricky Campbell, project leader for the US Fish and Wildlife Service who also operates the heavy machinery to remove unneeded structures like dams from streams.
Ginseng hunting in Tennessee
Go with me on an outdoor adventure to find wild ginseng. This video shares some woodcraft skills like how to cross a log and avoid Mr. Snake and easily walk up a very steep slope. It shows several examples of ginseng look alikes along with how to tell the difference. Have fun with your own outdoor adventure, but please, don't destroy wild ginseng, it is very rare.
