Dobšiná Ice Cave - Slovakia
This state-protected national monument is one of the scarcest and most remarkable natural phenomenons in Slovakia. It was discovered by a mining engineer E. Ruffinyi and his fellows on July 15, 1870. Already in 1871 it was open to public. In 1887 it was the first cave in Europe with electric lighting.
The entrance into the cave is situated in the northern slope of the Duča hill at the height of 969,5 m. The length of the cave reaches 1232 m. Going from the entrance aperture the rooms of the cave successively descend which together with the cave´s orientation to the north allows the cold air in winter to fall down and thus to cool off the inside rooms. In summer, on the other hand, the warmer air (is lighter) cannot get into the cave, and therefore the average temperature inside stays bellow 0°C the whole year.
The rooms of the cave iced up by repeating this cycle for many centuries. The rich decoration contains monuments mainly designed by the air-flow. The whole ice capacity is estimated to approximately 110 000 m3.
Driver's Eye View - Dobšiná to Rožňava - (Slovakia)
It’s already been a long day and we still have two more branch lines to visit including this one before continuing to the beautiful town of Kosice. It’s hard to believe that this wonderful network of railways still exists almost intact, carrying mainly freight, although some of the lines still see a limited passenger service. We join the driver in the cab of our affectionately named “Grumpy Diesel” for the run from Dobšiná to Rožňava through attractive mainly rural landscape, punctuated with occasional industrial complexes, towns and villages.

Dobsinska Ice Cave Slovakia
Hi Everyone ????
we visited one of the most beautiful places in Slovakia called Dobšinská Ice Cave - Dobšinská ľadová jaskyňa.
We drove about 2 hours from our home in Humenne, small city in east Slovakia. It was cloudy with many showers but we wanted to see this amazing place.
Once we arrived near ice cave we paid 3,50€ in car park. It took us about 15 minutes to get from the car park to the cave.
We paid 8€ per adult and we were charged 10€ for camera.
The cave is great! It is opened about 500m for the public which we walked through in about 30 minutes.
There is also a small souvenir shop, coffee/tea/hot chocolate automat and free public toilets.
After we went for a lunch in Utopia Pizzeria in Poprad which is making a great food.

Visit Slovakia – Unique castles, caves, hot springs, folk, beautiful nature
Unique castles, caves, hot springs, folk architecture, the European Dead Sea, a famous Celtic town, European wildlife and much more. What are some of the unique Slovak tourist spots that you’d hardly be able to find elsewhere?
Slovakia is a central European country known for its dramatic natural landscape and many castles. Near the Austrian border, capital city Bratislava features a pedestrian-only Old Town with a lively cafe scene. Rising on a hill above the Danube River, Bratislava Castle houses a branch of the Slovak National Museum, with displays ranging from Roman artifacts to 20th-century arts and crafts.
Slovakia is a castle superpower
The smaller the country, the greater the number of its castles. It’s doubtful you’d find another country that has as many castles as Slovakia. The first written mention of Slovakia’s oldest castle Devín dates back to the year 868. Spiš Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the ten largest castles in the world. And the whole world knows the terrifying story of the bloody countess Elizabeth Bathory from Čachtice Castle. Altogether, Slovakia has as many as 220 castles and castle ruins! Not enough? Then add its 425 chateaus to the mix.
The first folk architecture reservation in the world
Travel back in time and see what life in the Slovak countryside looked like in past centuries. The picturesque wooden village of Čičmany at the foothills of the Strážov Hills is actually the first-ever folk architecture reservation in the world! How did Čičmany come into existence? How did our ancestors live? How did they dress? How did they build painted wooden houses that look like fairy tale gingerbread houses? This place has many interesting stories from the distant past to tell. After all, the first mention of the village dates back to the year 1272.
The biggest cave dripstone
Yes, Slovakia is a cave superpower too. So far, 7,000 caves have been discovered in the country, and Krásnohorská Cave has the highest sinter column (34 metres) in the world. For a long time, it was considered the biggest dripstone in the world, registered in the Guinness Book of Records!
The centre of Europe
If you hear somebody say that Slovakia is the heart and centre of Europe, it’s not a joke. In a beautiful spot at Kremnické Bane in Central Slovakia, next to the ancient Church of St. John the Baptist, you can find a stone marking the geographical centre of Europe.
Bethlehem in Rajecká Lesná
Master carver Jozef Pekara needed more than 15 years to finish the Bethlehem in Rajecká Lesná. It is a true rarity, since it’s the largest wooden moving Bethlehem set in Europe. Pekara’s Bethlehem includes about 300 figures, half of which are movable. The piece is 8.5m long, 2.5m wide and 3m high. The beautiful exhibition not only depicts the birth of Christ, but also the history of the Slovak nation. For a long time, it was considered the largest Bethlehem in the world.
More than 1,600 mineral springs
No other country has, compared to its size, as many mineral springs as Slovakia. There are 1,657 officially-registered springs, but there probably are many more yet to be discovered. The mineral water of Smrdáky is unique for its hydrogen sulphide content. The largest number of springs in Slovakia can be found in Bešeňová, with 33 springs that reach temperatures of up to 61 °C.
UNESCO Cultural Heritage
Three localities from Slovakia were inscribed to the UNESCO World Heritage List already in 1993: Castle of Spiš and its environs, Banská Štiavnica and Vlkolínec. In 2000, the historic town Bardejov was added, in 2008 wooden churches of the Slovak part of Carpathian Mountain Area and in 2009 town Levoča.
UNESCO Natural Heritage
Unique natural heritage of Slovakia is represented in the UNESCO World Heritage List by caves and abysses of Slovenský kras karst and by Dobšinská ľadová jaskyňa cave. In 2007 the Carpathian primeval beech forests of the Bukovské vrchy and Vihorlatské vrchy Mts. in the east of Slovakia were added to this list.
UNESCO Intangible Heritage
Fujara is the most typical Slovak musical instrument. It was included by UNESCO in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The list was founded in 2001.
Second on the UNESCO intangible heritage list is the Music of Terchová – the “heavenly“ archaic folk music characteristic of Terchová and neighbouring villages, typified by multi-voice singing.

I bought this camper van in January 2011 having taken a very long time to choose what I wanted as well as needing a lot of time for something to become available. However I am very happy with it. Here I give some advice based on my experience and what people have told me about choosing a camper van. In other videos I will explain some other aspects of camper van life.
Here I present a journey in May 2012 from Warsaw in Poland to Eger in Hungary. As I travel I explain some of the things I see from the point of view of a British business person, economist, historian and camper van fan!

The Slovak diesel locomotive Goggle 757-016 has taken over the traffic task to transport the REx721 Bojnice fast train from (Bratislava -) Leopoldov to Prievidza on this beautiful summer day. The express train passes Bošany railway station nearby Topoľčany. As usual in Slovakia, also this passenger train carries a name that is related to its journey. Bojnice is just a small village west of the Prievidza, the destination of this train, but the main attraction is the castle Bojnice at the same place.

Driver's Eye View - Sabinov to Plaveč (Slovakia)
In this video we continue our grand tour of Slovakian railways with the second part of our trip from Košice to Muszyna (Poland), starting at Sabinov with our trusty diesel locomotive No.T478.1201, our train heads towards Plaveč through pretty towns and villages, climbing higher the scenery changes as the rolling hills give way to a more mountainous terrain. We descend a little to cross the Poprad (river) into Plaveč station where our complete train will be turned using the triangular junction created by the converging routes to Sabinov, Muszyna and Plaveč. Our train will be the first for a long time to use the Sabinov, Muszyna side of the triangle, which looked to have just been cleared of undergrowth to allow our train access. We finish this leg of our journey watching freight train movements at Plaveč.
