Indian Durbar (1938) - filmed in Alwar
Part of India on Film: 1899 – 1947

Beautiful travelogue of Alwar Durbar - The rich and vivid spectacle of the Durbar held for the Maharaja of Alwar is captured in gorgeous Technicolor by Jack Cardiff in this travelogue.
The rich and vivid spectacle of the Durbar held for the Maharaja of Alwar (in Rajasthan) is captured in ravishingly beautiful colour in this travelogue. The condescending commentary grates, but the stunning images - capturing the spectacle of the Maharajah's lavish parade (complete with elephant-pulled carriage) the dancers and the succession of tributes in the opulent palace courtyard - more than make up for it. They were shot by Jack Cardiff, world-recognised (and Oscar-winning) master of Technicolor.
Indian Durbar was one of a number of short travelogues shot by Cardiff in India (and many more elsewhere) in the late 1930s and early 1940s. Others include A Road in India and A Village in India. For the Technicolor company, the exoticism of the films' subjects offered a very useful demonstration of their vibrant colour process.

Drive from Alwar city to Bala Qila : Rajasthan
Road trip from Alwar City to Bala Qila in Rajasthan, India.
Alwar is a city and administrative headquarters of Alwar District in the Indian state of Rajasthan. It is located around 160 km south of Delhi, and about 150 km north of Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan. Alwar is part of National Capital Region (NCR). India's highest ever recorded temperature of 50.6 °C was measured at Alwar on 10 May 1956.
Alwar was formerly the capital of the princely state of Alwar. It was formerly spelt as Ulwar in British India. This placed it in last position in alphabetically ordered lists, so a king changed the spelling to Alwar to bring it to the top.
Alwar contains many interesting and historical monuments. The city has a beautiful lake and a picturesque valley. The Sariska Tiger Reserve is located in the Aravali hills only a few kilometres away from Alwar. The sanctuary, which is a Project Tiger reserve, also boasts of many other species, including rare birds and plants. The military cantonment of Itarana lies on the outskirts of Alwar. Hill Fort Kesroli now a heritage hotel is also near by. Raj Rishi College has existed in Alwar for over a hundred years.
Bala Quila is perched on a 300 meter high steep cliff that lends a majestic view of Alwar. Standing tall since 16th century and looking after Alwar even before the Mughals arrived, the fort is the most notable symbol of the Alwar city. It is said that Emperor Jahangir stayed in this Bala Quila when his father, the great emperor Ashok banished him. The place where Emperor Jahangir stayed in Bala Quila is known as Salim Mahal. Later, in the year 1775, Bala Quila was taken by Pratap Singh, the founder of Alwar state. This huge fort once upon a time had tight security which one can witness with its 15 large and 51 small towers perched on top of the fort.
The fort extends for about 5 km from north to south and 1.6 km from east to west. The fort has six gates, namely, Jai Pol, Suraj Pol, Laxman Pol, Chand Pol, Krishen Pol and Andheri Gate which tells us the story of valor and chivalry of Rajputs. Bala Quila walls are decorated with finely crafted with ancient scriptures and sculptures that would take you back to those golden times. It is a testimonial of Indo-Islamic architecture.
The fort also has Jai Mahal, Nikumbh Mahal, Salim Sagar Pond, Suraj Kund and many temples which even today reflect the grandeur of the bygone era. One can see the splendid view of the city from the watch towers of Bala Quila. One also needs to take the permission of Superintendent of Police, Alwar to visit the fort.
Surrounded by Aravalli Hills, Bala Quila gives a picturesque view and weaves the story of forgotten times. So pack your bags and travel back 1100 years to unfold the lost history.

Alwar | Trip to Alwar City Palace Museum
It’s nice clean well maintained palace i ever seen and recommend it for one time to watch Rajputana glory
Amazing Moosi Rani Ki Chhatri at Alwar , Rajasthan.
Moosi Rani ki Chatri in Alwar is a cenotaph dedicated to King Bakhtawar Sing and his Queen Moosi. It's adjacent to Alwar City Palace Complex and the Alwar Fort, called Bala Qila is visible from the Moosi Rani Chhatri complex and also the Aravalli hills, which surround it on two sides. The Moosi Rani ki Chatri is such a graceful complex that will want you to come back to it. There is also a reservoir close to it, but unfortunately its not in great shape and water looks slimy.

► City Palace, Jaipur, which includes the Chandra Mahal and Mubarak Mahal palaces and other buildings, is a palace complex in Jaipur, the capital of the Rajasthan state, India. It was the seat of the Maharaja of Jaipur, the head of the Kachwaha Rajput clan. The Chandra Mahal palace now houses a museum but the greatest part of it is still a royal residence. The palace complex, located northeast of the centre of the grid-patterned Jaipur city, incorporates an impressive and vast array of courtyards, gardens and buildings. The palace was built between 1729 and 1732, initially by Sawai Jai Singh II, the ruler of Amber. He planned and built the outer walls, and later additions were made by successive rulers continuing up to the 20th century. The credit for the urban layout of the city and its structures is attributed to two architects namely, Vidyadhar Bhattacharya, the chief architect in the royal court and Sir Samuel Swinton Jacob, apart from the Sawai himself who was a keen architectural enthusiast. The architects achieved a fusion of the Shilpa Shastra of Indian architecture with Rajput, Mughal and European styles of architecture.....
