Taxi Ride in Datong China
Chaos is the best word for traffic in Datong. There are lines painted on most of the streets but they are ignored. If more cars are coming from one direction, then the center yellow moves against the weaker flow. Cars, motorcycles and these three wheel delivery vehicles come from all directions and routinely travel the wrong way on one-way divided roads into oncoming traffic. All types of vehicles drive on sidewalks. Pedestrians have no rights and must look both ways even on one-way streets. Basically the biggest vehicle wins. Horns are blown not in anger but as a courtesy to let someone else know you are coming close and they should not make any sudden change in direction. Strangely I have seen only one accident and it was a fender bender. As crazy as it looks it seems to work.

Datong District office in Taipei comes up with unique premium
A creative fad has gripped Taiwan, and Taipei’s district offices are getting into the act, coming up with premiums for their promotional campaigns that have special creative touches. The items have been in such demand that some vendors have asked about selling them commercially. This red mobile phone cover has a likeness of the “Moon Elder” deity printed on it. It may look like a gift sold by a temple featuring the matchmaking god, but it’s actually a promotional premium distributed by the Datong District office. The office used the image of the “Moon Elder” deity from the nearby Xiahai City God Temple to design a series of premium items. Local residents are collecting them, and vendors have asked for authorization to make them commercially.Hsieh Cheng-chunHead of Datong DistrictAfter they were made, they were distributed as part of a campaign, drawing a strong response from local residents. Some vendors even asked us for authorization to sell the items. The Daan District office has promoted book bags with images of relics from the area printed on them, special puzzles, and convenient and insulated bags with cartoon themes. They were all snapped up quickly. Shih Shu-liDaan District Chief SecretaryThere were only limited amounts of the items during the campaigns. I hope (people) will request them earlier next year. The Daan District official said that her office only had samples of the mementos left. For those hoping to get their hands on them, they will have to wait until the office holds its next promotional campaign.
