Places to see in ( Lerwick - UK )
Lerwick is the main port of the Shetland Islands, Scotland, located more than 100 miles off the north coast of mainland Scotland on the east coast of the Shetland Mainland. Lerwick is about 210 miles (340 km) north-northeast of Aberdeen, 230 miles (370 km) west of Bergen in Norway and 230 miles (370 km) south east of Tórshavn in the Faroe Islands.
Lerwick is a busy fishing and ferry port. The harbour also services vessels supporting the offshore oil industry. Significant buildings in Lerwick include Fort Charlotte, Lerwick Town Hall, the Böd of Gremista, Shetland Museum and Archives and Clickimin Broch.
Because of the historic nature of the area, some scenes from BBC's Shetland (TV series) were filmed in Lerwick. Lerwick is served by the Tingwall Airport located a few miles away and Sumburgh Airport that is further south and flies all year to some Scotland destinations.
Northlink Ferries operate a daily overnight ferry service between Lerwick and Aberdeen, regularly calling in to Kirkwall in the Orkney Islands. The Shetland Islands Council operate a ro-ro ferry service to Out Skerries and Bressay from a terminal in the centre of the town. Lerwick has three schools; Bell's Brae Primary School, Sound Primary School and Anderson High School.
Lerwick has strong ties with Scandinavian countries, particularly Norway (Lerwick has a friendship agreement with Måløy in Norway), and this is reflected in the street names of Lerwick (e.g. King Harald Street, King Haakon Street). Lerwick is the focus of most events in Shetland, including the largest of the annual Up Helly-Aa fire festivals which takes place on the last Tuesday of January every year.

Mousa - one of the Shetland Islands and home to an Iron Age Broch.
Home to the best example of an Iron Age Broch in the world, the island of Mousa is one of Shetland's must sees. Not only is there outstanding archaeology and coastal scenery, but the island is a haven for wildlife. During the summer months hundreds of storm petrels return from the sea at dusk to roost in the walls of the broch - one of Shetland's most spectacular sights and sounds!

Broch of Mousa Shetland Islands Scotland
Tour Scotland travel video of the Broch of Mousa, located on Mousa, a small island on ancestry visit to the Shetland Islands. Mousa Broch is the best preserved Iron Age fortification in the British Isles The 2000 year old round tower stands above a rocky shoreline, one of a pair of brochs guarding Mousa Sound. They may be part of a chain of brochs in this part of Shetland, visible from each other as beacons. The other of the pair, at Burland on the Mainland is far less well preserved. Many brochs were the focus of a settlement, but there has never been a full archaeological investigation to confirm this at Mousa. It was cleared out in 1860 and 1919. Mousa has survived intact to such a height and is thought to never have been much higher than it is today. It escaped stone gathering for nearby stone walls and croft houses, now ruined. Mousa is mentioned in the Orkneyinga Saga as being used as a place of defence during invasions, as well as a lovers' hideout.

Coldoch Broch
Iron age broch, near Blairdrummond, Perthshire. Due to the recent good work of Stirling Archaeology volunteers, the previously very overgrown broch is now exposed and more detail can be seen.
One of the few lowland brochs.
Brochs are among Scotland's most impressive prehistoric buildings, the large majority of them dating from around 100 BC to 100 AD, the time of the Roman invasion of Britain. There are over 500 known sites of these iron age structures in Scotland, but it is only to the north and west, where stone was more readily available than timber, that brochs are to be found in any numbers.
Huge windowless towers, ingeniously engineered, they represent the pinnacle of dry-stone wall building, and remain one of the finest construction achievements of Iron Age Europe. Brochs were almost certainly originally roofed and would have had several timber floors known as galleries.
